  1. From my research it appears bullets do not lose stability when they slow down: Gyroscopic Stability Gyroscopic stability is the easier of the two to understand. Gyroscopic stability is usually referred to as a variable called Sg. Mathematically speaking, if Sg is greater than 1.0, the bullet can be said to be gyroscopically sable. Sg goes up if you spin the bullet faster. Sg also goes up if velocity decreases. Sg goes down if you use a longer, thinner bullet. If a bullet starts out gyroscopically stable, it tends to stay that way because velocity drops faster than the bullet's spin rate. If a bullet is gyroscopically unstable at the muzzle, it will never be stable. Factors That Increase Gyroscopic Stability Lower velocity Higher spin rate Shorter/fatter bullet geometry Lower air density While calculating Sg is not terribly complex, it's not the sort of thing you can do with a hand calculator except as an approximation. That is a topic for another article. There are several calculators available on the web that will give you an approximate value, however, such as this one by JBM Ballistics. Find it here: https://bisonballist...ullet-stability So the argument that a factory gun can shoot accurate at 100yd but not at distance seems to be a myth.
  2. cjl 2010, The only explanation I've seen on on this post is that the bullets are not fully stabilized and loose accuracy as they slow down. I don't believe that bullets loose their RPMs very much as they slow down do they? Depending on the cartridge many of them are coming with the right twist from the factory. e.g most 6.5 CM come with a 1 in 8 twist. so that wont be a problem. You said a couple of guys gave a good explanation. I missed them....beside RPMs what are the other explanations?
  3. $1200 Scope not included. Here are the Specifications: 26" Shilen barrel 1 in 10" Bluprinted Remington 700 action Tuned Factory Trigger Short Throat, No neck turning Total round count approximately 225 Includes RCBS Dies and 2 boxes of Weatherby ammo. I bought this off a CWT member earlier this year. I wanted to turn in into my 1000 yard steel gun. I have tried Hornady 110 gr ELDx, Nosler Accubond 110 gr, and 100 gr Barnes TTSX out of it. The two 110gr bullets shoot over 3500 fps. The Barnes shoot over 3600 fps. According to my logs I have put around 60 of the 225 shots through this gun. I am not getting the groups I want out of the two 110 gr bullets. The Barnes 100 gr TTSX shoot 3/4 " at 100 yards but because of the cost and BC it is not the bullets I want for my intentions and I need the money for another project. Mike 928.607.6327 Flagstaff

    6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM?

That was kind of a rhetorical question. You said poke holes them. You can do that with a 22 long rifle st 50 yds so that give us you minimum of about 100 foot-lbs. Now we just need to figure out how far you want to do that. Im assuming you want to stay super-sonic so that changes things. Its seems like you want to be able to shoot 1000 yards or more so that figures into the equation.....Im guessing you like a 6.5 caliber or larger starting at over 3000 fps. What are your favorite cartridges anway?

    6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM?

Ah come on. There has to be a minimum about of energy you believe in?

    6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM?

Wow. Lots of personal opinions there. A properly constructed bullet takes less energy 100% of the time? We will just have to disagree on this one. And yes, if it is outside of my velocity window I will not shoot. Not even a consideration. This is very gun dependent: e.g my 6.5x55 has a very different max range than my big 7s and 30 calibers and I wont exceed it.

    6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM?

I think you just made my point for me. A Barnes LRX bullet needs about 1600 fps to expand properly. This velocity represents a minimum amount of energy to work. Beger bullies have historically had problems on both extremes. Too much energy and they fragment. Too little and they dont expand at all. Again its still about the energy. We can talk about wether a heavier bullet from a larger caliber with more energy will be more lethal. (I think you would agree a bullet from a 338 Lapua at 2000 fps has a very different affect than a 22 cal bullet at the same velocity?) I guess I agree that maybe it would be more simple to talk bullet velocity windows. Which most manufacturers list. But velocity is a component of energy and it is really the energy than initiates expansion.

Yes, some pre 64s had stainless barrels.

    6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM?

I think a bullet requires a minimum amount of velocity, therefore KE, to expand properly. Otherwise all we would need are solids. So yes, I think it always matters.

    6.5 WSM or 6.5 SAUM?

Why doesnt energy matter? I might be old school.

    30-06 load

Almost all the he 30-06 family of cartridges benefit greatly from Hodgdon HSP. We easily get 3150 fps with 150 gr bullets and over 3000 fps with 165/168 gr. Start with H4831 load data. Just remember it is not one of their extreme powders so it is more temperature sensitive.

    Swarovski 15x56

I run both the 12x50s and 15x56HD a lot. My eyes arent goid enough to tell any difference in resolution. There is a huge difference in field of view. An additional 65% if you do the math. I like the 12s. My son prefers the 15s.

    Kowas or byx

The Obvious is how much lighter the BTX is. And how much more compact and portable. They are very similar resolution wise. The big difference is the brightness. Remember the BTX splits the light path so each eye only receives half the light. When you first look through them they appear dim but your eyes adjust quickly and you dont noticed it. I have no complaints about the light gathering of the 95mm objective. The 65mm is a little too dark for me in the first and last 20 minutes or so.

    SOLD

The 65mm and 85mm objectives on the BTX are 30x. It is 35x with the 95. So the field of view is actually more with the 65mm and 85mm than with the 95mm (112 feet at 1000yds vs 96 feet) so it should be a little easier to find your subject with the 65mm. The sighting tool on the BTX actually really works well if you need it.

I bet, the 65 was as well. Only issue was finding what I was looking at with binos. Was that an issue with the 95 or was it easy to get used to?

Ouch. Cant even come up with and original response huh? This is my last reply to you. I think Im abusing the intent of this forum. Im sorry. Have a good night.

    Food for Thought

Such a quippy response. Did you have your friends help you with that? Actually its not if I say so. Its the definition. I'd bet I enjoy this more than you do?

    Lightweight Riflescope

Im torn on the Barret. It looks a a heck of a rifle for the price. They used Melvins design without consulting him though. Melvins patents must have expired. So I guess they didnt steal anything.
