if it was just a bunch of yips.... like non stop, they may have seen you, heard something that wasn't right, or smelled you. if they started going off just from your rabbit distress this may be the case. if they had some howls going they may have been saying stay away this is our territory. calling too much can hurt your set. not a bad idea to sit in silence for a few minutes. sounds that trigger instincts is what you want to use. pups have been kicked out to fin for themselves, these younger coyotes shouldn't be educated yet. switching sounds can definitely help. give it a good 5 minutes of silence, then throw in some pup yips and whines. this sound will trigger female mother instincts to come see. as stated above a challenge howl can trigger instincts in a big ol male. I almost always go to pup distress toward the end of my set. go sneak back in there and use a totally different sound... like woodpecker distress. you can do this sound on a closed or open reed call that's high pitched like a mouse squeaker. as you blow from your diaphragm twirl the tip of your tongue like your trying to make a rattlesnake sound and give the exit end of the call some back pressure by cupping your hand over it and varying the pitch. The reason for someone to not tell the truth is to manipulate harvest rates to make it easier to get the tag again. You harvest, but you say you don't. The harvest rate reported is lower than actual, less people are willing to put in for hunts with lower harvest rates, you therefore would have a higher chance of drawing the tag again for yourself. This would cause many other problems of course, like the department having bad info, making bad decisions from bad info, potentiality leading them to changing the hunt, decreasing tags, etc. etc. A great example would be 16A archery elk. 4 tags, a bad survey would throw results automatically by 25%. I always fill them out online. Takes like 2 minutes. I don't want the department, or myself, to have bad information about the hunts going on in our state. You report that you did not harvest, then azgf shows up on your doorstep and finds a nice pair of antlers. Now you are not just giving bad information - you are a poacher! You list that you did harvest and you actually didn't, then less tags and better game population. "like the department having bad info, making bad decisions from bad info, potentiality leading them to changing the hunt, decreasing tags, etc. etc" What do you think they do now? Filling out online reports is a lot cheaper than conducting aerial surveys as well. As with anything that deals with statistics, the more information you have the better. not always less tags, you then cut revenue... one good way to decrease success rate is to put a bunch more tags... lowers success and increases revenue. I think I may read sarcasm in your bold type...... How long are the back forks in your avatar Norteno? sweet buck! James

older gent I use to chat with use to say they know what day of the week it is... LOL! he would say... I don't like to go out on the weekends anymore... mondays are ok, tuesdays are good, wednesdays and thursdays are best! he was pretty funny! from my experience when they get alot of traffic it tends to keep em cautious, but if you walk in a bit further from the roads and give them some cover to feel more comfortable they still come in. used to be special rules regarding small game... mainly squirrel from what I can remember... you weren't allowed to hunt squirrels in units that had a big game hunt going on but that was long ago.... only thing you need to read are the notes for which hunt you are going to go on. each hunt has notes next to the date saying... area x is closed to hunting... or x wildlife area is open to hunting. or the notes could be warnings about concern for wet weather travel and road damage.... so on and so on. you are good to go... although some may frown but it is public land... I coyote hunt and if I see someone who looks like they may be on a big game hunt I'll try to give them their space, but like I said it's public land. Hope this helps! James

there are two kind of hunters, fat a$$es who hunt off the road and at tanks near roads, and those who get away from roads and into the back country, most back country cameras don't get jacked not sure how to take your post tough guy....... yeah so you don't like fat people... who cares.... am I over weight.. yeah. broken leg, shattered foot, broken back. have yet to have a camera stolen.... and I have 6 cams... is that ok?I put em on tanks I know get less traffic due to hiking in, but you increase your chances. O/P didn't say get away from roads and I was making a statement that if you put it on water you increase your chances of it getting jacked... we all can't be cool like you And try reading the post you quoted..... he didn't say put salt on water he said find a game trail if you can't find water and that he wasn't sure about the legality of putting salt out. sincerely... fatA$$ hunter
