went out with the wife camping for a few days by morman lake in 6a should have checked the regs cause there was a cow elk hunt going on! duh! not wanting to compete with them I waited for the weekend warriors to go home. Monday came and we headed over to 5B to make some sets. Still a lot of people driving around road hunting so we took the fr125 down off the anderson mesa. so way late now but got in a couple sets. called this male in at about the 20 minute mark. started with jack rabbit distress then switched to coyote pup distress after about 10 min. I was actually getting up when this yote came in. I was in such a big hurry to make this set I didn't load the gun! Haha! Squeezed the trigger and yep... click! he was dead down wind. loaded 1 round and he was patient enough to wait for me and shot him at 220yds. Made 4 sets and called 1 yote. james

there are no sure things in bow hunting..... whether sitting water or salt/food or spot n stalk. luck has a little to do with it but that being said there are guys on here that slay big bucks every year. Their dedication and hard work pays off. Sitting or stalking could be like a light beer commercial.... Less filling... Tastes great! Sitting water or a trail leading to water in the August/September is a good plan. I chase them all over in the late season. Kill or not it is a blast! james

I have used turkey feathers but haven't used consistent enough to know how effective it is. on one I used a wooden dowel and fishing line. put a round eyed screw in the top of the dowel and tied off the line and bored a hole through the quill of a couple turkey feathers and tied the other end to them. looks great in a light breeze. on another one I just used an old arrow. I'm sure it can work the same on a squirrel tail. I finally broke down and bought a decoy. the first dog I called in hung up at 220yds but I think it helped with my movement to get the shot off... sun in my face and the coyote was dead down wind.

with a full choked 870 3" #4 buck I have shot out to 50yds and dropped um' haven't put them on paper though. shot a fox at point blank after he thought he wanted in my lap (because I was holding the caller in my hand...haha) very small holes. james

that coyote has some crazy color combos! very cool! try some #4 buck plenty for yotes! 00 buck will put a big hole on the close ones. that thick stuff you're hunting for coues should produce some fox. great job! thanks for sharing! james

Thanks for the info. You would think they would have a way to set up sequences. Maybe in a future upgrade? i'm sure you can download your own sequence and put it on there. check out varmint Als electic web page. http://www.varmintal.com/ james

A little day date fun before frolic
JLW replied to shurtzgarret's topic in Predator Hunting and Trapping
not familiar with that unit... but nice job! you seem to be on the right track. thicker rocky terrain will produce lots of fox. a little more open stuff for coyotes, but not so open so they don't feel comfortable coming in. james -
deer don't see colors as we see them.... so blaze orange is not blaze orange. the cones and rods in there eyes are different than ours so colors are transmitted differently. here is a link that can explain it better that I can. basically they are red and green color blind but can see into the ultra violet spectrum. http://www.atsko.com/articles/hunting/color-vision-in-deer.html james

spot n stalk? that's awesome and with a bow! james

just grab your bows and hang on cause the rut is coming and there ain't nothin' like it! Come on DECEMBER 9th! james

seclusion open country. blends great in the stickers works good on coyotes when they get 5ft from you and figure out... oh shoot!and is not too hard on the wallet. but honestly anything that breaks up your outline.... james

I'm not an expert by no means but I always keep a new tarp in the package in my backpack to help keep the dirt out when working from the ground. to me getting the hide off asap and cooling the meat down is very important for the taste of the meat. DIY definitely the way to go! I put the deboned pieces in a cooler with dry ice for 3 or 4 days with the plug opened to drain any liquids, keeping the dry ice from contacting the meat. then cut it up into roasts and steaks and pieces to be ground for hamburger. works pretty well. james

http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=25155 some of these guys are really good at ground blinds. I like the 1 about building up the brush so you can leave enough room to pop your blind up inside the brush you have built up and tied off. that way when you take it with you it still has the brush so they will get used to seeing it. P.S. THIEVES SUCK!

that's hilarious! james
