if you use a crushed salt it melts into the soil. I don"t think it can be too salty since I have seen them lick the salt block. I like to sweeten it up with cain or buck jam or something that smell sweet. that just makes me feel better. I'm sure the will still get on it if I didn't. but a heavy game trail between beds and water is ideal like a saddle or funnel. just my opinion. most of what I have learned is from this sight! I love this sight! James

winslow holbrook / rincon basin is loaded with quite a few. private property and the little colorado river which is thick with trees makes it difficult. google maps you can see the huge alfalfa fields where they come in and feed. the ranchers get ticked off. I believe the rincon basin is archery only. I've been wanting to give it a try myself. I know a guy that has 600 or so acres and the elk destroy his alfalfa. long drive and gas is not cheap. might give it a go. at least if you get a tag in January you have a long time to get it done! hope this helps! +1 on burying it. Clear out all the grass and whatnot and dig a big circle about 4" down 2-4 feet in diameter. I use 40lbs pool salt it melts into the soil faster and cost $6 at Wally world.Cover it with the dirt you dug out. I then pour something sweet on top deer cain or whatever. Then check it about every 60-90 days It can take a while to establish a great lick. I think it depends on a multitude of factors... ie. human traffic, predators are just a couple of them. I've had them in a close proximity to too much human activity and they would only come at night. Trial and error. Good luck! James

I agree sound is not the main factor in calling predators. Like stated above different predators like different terrain. Your set-up is the key.Be as quiet as possible and try not to skyline when going to your stand. Everyone has there own preference on how to set up wind being one of the key factors. I know guys that face down wind because coyotes like to circle down wind and they call in a ton of predators. I like to set up cross wind and in the shade if possible. If they see you, here you or smell you they will not come! In the high country which is my favorite I like woodpecker distress and start the volume off really low. In the lower terrain I like lightning jack or cottontail distress. A decoy is nice even if it's a couple of turkey feathers tied to a string and attached to a stick or old arrow. Eventually you will find what works. I have had dead batteries to where my old black tape recorder I used to use , barely made squeaks and coyotes came charging from over 300 yds away. I like coyote vocalizations certain times of year like October when all the new pups are getting out on there own. I also like to use a howler in the mating season to start off a sequence. IMO April - July are my toughest months to call coyotes. 1 they have been called all winter and 2 there is an abundance of food sources berries, beans, bugs..... and they don't need to eat as much in the warmer months. I learned the hard way of going on my own, if you can go with an experienced predator caller you will accelerate your learning curve. Hope this info helps. Remember you can't call em' in from your couch. Good luck! James

quail season question
JLW replied to yotebuster's topic in Small Game, Upland Bird, and Waterfowl Hunting
SHOOTING HOURS Legal shooting time is during daylight hours (see sunrise-sunset chart on page 99) or as prescribed by the Commission (see individual Commission Orders). In general, if you can see well enough to shoot safely, you are legal. Taking wild animals or birds by moonlight or artificial light is illegal, except for raccoons, reptiles and other mammals as prescribed in R12-4-304, page 117. Other time requirements apply for migratory birds (see Migratory Bird Regulations). -

yea i had that in archery season a couple of buddies want to go but can never find time to go scout but this year my brother in-law came through and made a few trips with me. i just get po'd cause i spend all my extra time and gas and many times in the dog house(so to speak) and when it comes time to go your getting calls that they want to come along. my wife and a buddy at work have the same tag and i have done all the scouting except 1 day trip. he goes on an over the counter elk hunt with some other doucshe from work instead of comming to help scout! he's young and new to hunting so i've cut him a little slack. i had the same opportunity to go on the elk hunt before he did and if i pass up a trip on private land you know the guy offering is as i stated above. i feel your pain........ good luck on your hunt! james

a digital caller can help with that. last year i had a fox jump up on the same rock ledge i was sitting on, i was holding the caller in my hand. it happened so fast he growled at me as i eased the caller and set it down with my shotgun laying across my lap kinda already pointed at him i picked it up and just pulled the trigger without even getting the gun up to my shoulder he did a backward summersalt off off the rock. after that happened i now put the caller out even if only 10 yds or so. i haven't called any in with hand calls i usually only use them when calling coyotes. just be caytious not to shoot your caller............ hope this helps james
