    Electronic bikes?

welp, if you're going the lazy way, just get yourself an ultralite, that way there's no danger of cracking a sweat. seriously, 20 miles should be easily pedalable, with a season or two's practice. they make hunting bikes, and hunting accessories for bikes. http://www.cogburnoutdoors.com/ i got a buddy who i think is a dealer for these babies, if you're interested.

    Great geology in AZ

diamond point has lots of quartz, but the digging season is closed, you can pick up stuff that's laying there. also, the paleo site on 260 has lots of aquatic fossils. i take my kids there quite often, it's always a blast for them.

    Anyone removed saltillo tile?

what are you planning on putting over the floor? it may be possible to float out the saltillo. still a mess, but less foul language. i was a flooring contractor for 14 years, and never tore out tile. i always hired a convict from the half way house, gave him a dust mask and a rotary hammer with a tile bit and paid him per square foot, (so he wouldn't milk out the job). we would also hang plastic to keep the dust contained.

    Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!

It was a coues, @ 35 yards. Im not arguing with you necessarily, but you gotta listen to Gillingham in that podcast. He's challenged conventional thought quite successfully on all things archery. Ive learned more in that podcast than from any other single source about archery. As mentioned above, episode 80 has Hanes differing from the aforementioned conclusion, and is well worth listening to as well. Hunt hard, shoot well. Best of luck this fall.

    Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!

the fellows in the gritty podcast begged to differ, to a degree. I'm the guy that went for a crazy fast setup. i'm shooting a 7.9 gpi with a 100 grain head ulmer edge. I just completely broke a deer's shoulder and still got a pass-thru. i think the reason why i (and they) are going with expandables is because of tunability issues at high speeds. With the now extinct ulmer edge, i really didn't have to tune my broadheads. But with fixed blades, tuning was a massive issue. As i've been advised, fixed blades don't tune well over 300 fps. i think i remember snyder saying he shot an 85 pound bow, with a 500 grain arrow, so no kinetic energy issues there, but the consensus was that a lot of the reason why guys get such good penetration with expandables at high speeds is because of the quality of arrow flight, and the arrows ability to recover much more quickly than than an arrow shot with fixed blades, thus putting the kinetic energy of the expandable in the right place. That way an expandable has more potential for penetration. it seems they agreed that a slower bow may perform petter with fixed blades, because tuning issues are not such a problem, and because there is not as much loss of KE from a broadhead opening. it seems to make sense to me. also, gillingham threw doubted traditional FOC numbers in this video. Something i was surprised to see. But many consider him to be the best bowshot in the world.

    Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!

what's the reasoning behind your decision? not that shuttle's aren't great heads....but why no mechanicals? I have heard of far too many people who used mechanicals that didn't open. When hunting, I am a firm believer in having 100% reliable equipment such as bolt action rifles, revolvers, and fixed blade broadheads. I don't like having any fear whatsoever that there could be a failure with my weapons when I'm hunting. cool. well, nothing wrong with fixed blades, for sure. but consider, military guys go into combat with auto pistols and rifles, not revolvers and bolts for the most part, because the benefit outweighs the risk. everything can fail, including a fixed blade, and may actually be much more prone to do so than a quality expandable, as illustrated in the above podcast. my go to fixed blade is the good old NAP thunderhead. they cost per six what others cost per 3, and kill stuff till it's dead. but i like my ulmer edges really well. arrow flight and tunability is unprecedented. but i woudn't use one unless i was totally comfortable with it. good hunting.

    Rage 3-blade broadhead SUCK!?!?!

this was suggested watching, i would almost say "required watching" if you want to choose a broadheads. give your wife the credit card, send her to the mall, and sit back on the couch and listen to gillingham's advice. i would never use a fix blade again, if i could help it. chalk it up to personal experience, coupled with the advice of one of the best bow shots in the world.

    Shoot to 100yrd?

all i know is, i bought the IQ sight, and i can shoot better than ever. my last session i was humming them in there at 80 yards with ease. i think with a little practice i could be doing 100 yards no problem. also, i got a pse premonition, that has a solid back stop. so i'm always money on my back tension.

    Leftover tags last year...

seems like units in the high 20's and low 30's have some tags left over from time to time.

Same hunt for first and second choice?

makes sense. that said, how does having a lot of bonus points help you get a low "random" number? because if it did, it wouldn't be random. I thought you got your name tossed in the hat again for every bonus point you have. while i'm not too particular about this elk hunt, i'll probably draw that late archery tag, though it would be nice to know i had at least a shot at the rifle tag. i'm not sure how to approach the draw with these 2 hunts in mind. it does make a difference to me for deer however. right now i'm banking points while i whack the first deer that walks in front of me during archery season. however, i would like to enter the draw when i i get 10 bonus points. (when i hit 10 points, i probly won't shoot a buck w/ my bow unless it's a monster) i think i have 7 right now. but i'm pretty set on 13b, unless the deer situation changes up there. So, how do i approach that? just put in 13b for my first choice and leave the rest blank? or put in for 13b on every choice? You can do either and it will have the exact same effect. However, if you are applying for 13b rifle it won't matter. You won't be anywhere near the bonus pass with 10 points. true, but, last i checked, you get legit draw odds at 10 points. (it was a few years back, before the that draw odds website started charging for their services, now i don't know where to look.) anything below 10 points was miniscule. seems guys have been pulling that tag regularly with 14 points, that i've heard anyways. im sure it will go up a point or 3 by the time i get there.

What Elk Unit to Apply For and Why?

i put in for 22s, rifle then late archery. because i live there. that's why. i know the archery hunt can be miserable, but, it's an easy draw, and i'd rather hunt than sit here on cwt and look at everybody else's pics. so misery or not, i'm going for it. plus, living here, gives me an advantage. i think. maybe. lol.

Same hunt for first and second choice?

this is confusing. what is the 1-2 pass? the more i read about the draw process, the less i understand it. my first choice was a late rifle tag that's relatively hard to get. my second choice is a late archery tag that's very easy to get. are you saying i have no or little chance of getting my first choice?
  23. After getting skunked all the way around in 2015, i was more than happy to drop the string come January. I found a spot that was maybe only a mile from the trailhead, tops, that seemed to be the happening place. I had another stand already in place, that was a couple miles in on another trail, but i could access it by a shorter route through private property. So, a couple hundred yards in, here i am toting a tree stand, and all the gear, i bumped 8 does out of a draw. I looked long and hard at that place to put my treestand, but opted to hike further in to my original spot. 3 does and a buck were bedded in my original spot, so i decided to go ahead and hang the stand there. Another doe grazed 200 yards east of me, and when i got the stand hung, 4 more does walked by just out of range. It felt like a good spot. Then it snowed. I had to wait a couple days till i could even get up to the trail head. Meanwhile, i looked for muleys, but didn't see anything too promising. maybe a dozen deer, and a couple of smallish bucks that weren't in a great position to make a long stalk. One evening, when i was glassing for muleys, somebody broke into my old ford truck, parked along the beeline, and stole all my gear that was in the truck. This included a Gerber backpack, an Easton bag that goes to my Easton pack, my SKB bow case, and all my arrows and broadheads and tools that i didn't have with me. I think i had 3 arrows and 2 broadheads to my name at this point. So, after the snow melted enough to get to the trailhead, i made the grueling hike through knee deep snow to look for tracks. My first tree stand didn't look too productive, it only had one set of tracks under it in the 2 to 3 day old snow. So i checked out the new stand. When i got to the draw where i'd jumped the 8 does, i found it was hammered with tracks. I continued on to hunt. Nothing. I went back to my stand the next morning, and jumped a buck out of the aforementioned draw. From that point, i knew i had to put a stand in there somewhere. I saw a forkhorn 99 yards away, and that was it. So i dug through the shed and found another stand, a climber i rarely use. I got it all set up. It was a couple days later before i could make it out again. I got there at first light and climbed really high, maybe 18-20 feet. I got settled in, and a doe came in, her head to the ground and ears forward. I stood up and got ready, knowing she was in heat. I heard a buck grunt twice, but i couldn't find him. Eventually I could make out a large, grey mass under a tree. I couldn't see his head, but i knew this was a buck. He was pretty heavy, too. I ranged him at 50 yards. After a few minutes he began to walk, I could see his antlers above his ears, and could see they weren't big by any means, but would still be a legal buck. He stopped to nibble on a bush at 31 yards. I pulled off my glove, drew and let one fly. Crack! It sounded like i hit a tree. (i think the steep angle caused the arrow hot hit high) The deer jumped, and looked around frantically, but couldn't find me to save his live. I quickly drew again, this time with the last broadhead i owned, and held a little lower. He was probly 35 yards at at this point. This time i heard a Crunch! Sounded like a shoulder shot. (He was quartering towards me.) He lowered his head and trotted off. His trot soon became a limp. He stopped, and i thought he'd go down, but he didn't. He limped behind a scrub oak, and i lost sight of him. I prayed for that deer to go down quickly. I waited for 45 minutes, and got down. As soon as i got down, another doe came in. I stood still till she winded me from 20 yards, snorted and stomped off. I went to where the buck was standing, and sure enough, my first arrow was sticking out of the tree. No sign of the second. No blood, either. My heart sank. Not a drop in the snow anywhere. I looked down to the scrub oak that the buck disappeared into, and another forkhorn walked up to the oak, and stared into the brush, sniffing and tip-toeing around. I shooed the little buck on, and went to investigate. Sure enough, he had found my dead deer. The angle was so steep that i hit him high on the shoulder, and the arrow exited in front of the back leg on the opposite side, through his belly. My brand new PSE Premonition, maxed out at 70 pounds, shot a Gold Tip Vapor Pro, tipped with an Ulmer Edge straight through the shoulder blade and out the other side. He was so torn up on the inside, you'd have thought i shot him with a .300 win mag. But the food from his stomach plugged the lower hole, keeping blood from coming out, and the high shoulder shot was too high to bleed. When I cut him open, he was full of blood from the double lunger. I bowed my head and said a quick prayer of thanks, and began the pack-out. He's not a monster, but i am one happy hunter!!!
