John Hook and Kari Lake mentioned that the Governor signed into law 2 new Gun Rights bills. A personal favorite of mine and one that I've been following is House Bill 2543 Preemptive Sub-jurisdiction. John and Kari said the law will allow CCW owners to carry firearms into parks. Many parks in Phoenix and Glendale already allowed CCW owners to carry in parks. HB2543 states a few things, but in a nut shell, does not allow a sub-jurisdiction to enact any laws to supersede state law with regards to certain aspects of firearms, their transportation, ammunition, reloading components, gun shops and ranges, and (my personal favorite) hunting. You see, my friends wanted to take me dove hunting in the desert in unit 39 & 41. Supposedly, this is an ultra secret spot ... ooops. Anyway I called the City of Buckeye to ask where the city boundaries were and the clerk said that hunting is not allowed anywhere in the city. I agreed, but asked my question again about where is the city boundary? She said she didn't have a map and it didn't matter because beyond the city limit was Maricopa country and they were even more restrictive. I knew for a fact she was not correct but decided to make a couple of calls. G&F verified that those units are in the city limits of Buckeye but weren't sure where the boundary was and hunters were to respect all local laws. Maricopa County said their policy falls in line with G&F (i.e. 1/4 mile from the nearest residence). HB2543, I don't believe its an emergency bill so, although signed today will be enacted in 90 days. It states that G&F determines where hunting may occur in the State of Arizona. Now they could come back and say "these are the boundaries and you will not hunt there", but that's better then "You can't hunt within city limits and no I don't know where it ends". Local jurisdictions can still and are expected to enforce State gun laws. -HaYen

STUD!!!! How do I get a kid like you? Conrats on the hunt. If you have a lot of photos (not just of the hunt but of Christmas as well) you may want to do a photo book. -B

Welcome to the site!!! Congradulations on the draw. Good luck on the deer draw. LOTS of good folks here. BJ

LOL OUCH!!! I can't go this year because of work, although if I'd a gotten drawn I'd a figured out a way to go <evil grin>. I don't mind going and calling in bulls as long as I get some meat.

How long has it been since you been drawn for bull elk
HaYen replied to joeybari's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Never. I've never been drawn for bull elk. Pretty successful at deer and Javelina. I'm thinking of blowing my points next year on a cow hunt. I know it sounds ... not very intelligent ... but I can't wait 16 years to get drawn. -
@CouesridgeConst. - How are you setting up the VLD if you don't mind me asking?

I'm guessing 27

How much "fitting" was required?

Ballistics Calculator for Android devices
HaYen replied to HaYen's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have to give up for the author, I never thought of using the phones GPS to collect data. Maybe he'll port it out to Win7 phones. LOL, that's a whole different kind of BSD. -
Here's a project that someone beat me too; A Ballistics Calculator for Android powered devices. I haven't loaded / used it yet, as I haven't yet acquired my Android phone. The screen shots make it look more user friendly for that interface then surfing over to Winchester's web site, for example, and using the calculator on their page. Also, an Android app would still work if you can't get a WiFi or cell signal. I believe the app also uses the devices internal GPS to acquire some of the information (NICE!!!). Has anyone tried this app? Best of all, its free. Now, if I could convince T-Mobile to renew my contract now and discount me a Samsung Behold2. I wonder if anyone has done this for the Win7 Phones? 270 WSM reloading suggestions
HaYen replied to lionhunter's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Between the 270WSM and 300WSM I reload and shoot, I prefer the 270. 65grs Accurate MagPro 140 Barnes TSX 57.5grs IMR4350 130gr Speer HotCor 51.0grs Varget 130gr Speer HotCor 63.0grs V100 100gr Hornady SP <-- My cousin will use this for Javelina I have a box of 130grTTSX that I haven't opened yet that would be a good candidate for either the Varget or V100. -
I usually start at .030 and work a range from .1 max to .010 min. I'm more concern with pressure either gained from seating the bullets too deep or too close to (like right on) the lands. YMMV

My driver's lic. has a PO Box on it which is why I carry my Voter Reg card when purchasing a firearm. Its actually pretty funny. I hand over my license and Voter Registration card and they immediately hand me back the card telling me they don't need it until they notice the PO Box then ask for it back.

Although not a Kimber, I shoot/hunt with a Savage Model 12VFSS that came with a 1:12 from the factory. This thing is a tack driver. And although some have taken game as large as Elk and Bear with the 22-250 and 220 Swift, I load up either 53gr TSX or 55gr VMaxies for Javelina, Coyotes, Bob Cats, and Deer. I prefer to use the '06 or 50 cal Muzzle Loader for anything larger. The rest of the guns are for shooting.

Ballistics Calculator for Android devices
HaYen replied to HaYen's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
The Motorola Droid is an Android Device (uses the Android Operating System), but a lot of companies have Android devices. Most of these are cell phones, but don't have to be. Here's a sample list of devices. I picked the Behold 2 because its a T-Mobile phone and has built in: 16GB of extra memory via the microSD slot Bluetooth 2.1 Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi radio GPS -
Death of Three Condors ... Possible Lead Free Ban?
HaYen posted a topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
So on one of the other boards I frequent, someone who knows I hunt with Barnes or eTips up around the canyon, asked me if I had heard of three Condors deaths in Arizona and Utah due to lead poisoning. I sent an email to a person over at the AZ Game and Fish that I've spoken with in the past about Lead in the Canyon. This was her response: -

Max I was curious by your post, were you just interested in the BDC turret or the quality of the scope? The reason I ask is there are at least two other options, if you already have a quality scope but were interested in a BDC turret, that could save you some green. First, I only own one scope with this capability. There are arguments for and against these accessories and the guys and guest of Best of the West sure make it look easy. Personally, I think BDC turrets help but their largest contribution is solidifying the confidence of the shooter. The first option is a custom turret like those from Kenton. There order page has a list of scope manufactures they can make turrets for. Send them your data and they can CNC one for you. The second option may look cheesy but works and saves you a few greens. Your scope has to have target knobs; Zero in your scope with your load and as close to the conditions you intent to hunt. Place a piece of masking tape around the turret and start marking off from the zero distance. This technique allows one to customize the scope during a sight in session before the hunt. A load with chronograph data and ballistic charts are a good starting point to determine where a round will impact. Even if I owned a Huskemaw (which I am sure is a quality scope), I would want a turret for a 130gr TSX traveling 3100/fps for 7000' elevation out of my aut6 and one for 150gr Berger VLD moving at 2800/fps at 3000' elevation. But that's just me. Happy huntin Da HaYen

LOL soooooo true. There are 50 tags in the hunt I put in for which means 50 people will get drawn so I'm preparing for the wost and hoping for the best. And if I don't get drawn, I'll still go with someone who did and do some Spot-N-Stalks. Good luck everyone!!!!

Those are some nice Javelinas!!!! Congrats

Flash do you reload? John Barness has said that Berger Hunting VLD's are very devastating on animals (shrapnel a plenty) and loves their performance on thin skin animals. They are a very accurate bullet in my 30-06, decent price and its the only bullet used by guys like Aaron & Mike Davidson, Shorty Gorham, and John Porter. Those folks will take animals at over 900 yards.
