    Weird deaths!

One evening last summer I was walking down my driveway to the mailbox and saw about 10 inches of a rattlesnake's tail sticking out of a small diameter hole. I went back to the house and got my snake loop. When I slipped the loop around the tail the snake didn't budge so I moved the loop to the point the body was exiting the hole. When I tightened up on the loop and tried to pull it out .........10 inches of rattlesnake popped off. It was dead. Judging from the diameter of the snake compared to the diameter of the hole I suspect it went in the hole, swallowed a rat and couldn't go forward or back.

    Used atv advice

Honda Rincon is bullet proof. Direct drive and no belt worries. You won't end up stranded 50 miles from no where. I have put 9,000+ off road hard ride miles on mine. I change jets for Colorado. Riding in AZ never a problem from desert to Flagstaff and in between using the same jet. Take care of your machine (most don't they just think they do) change the oil/filter on schedule, service the air filter and do a meticulous inspection after each ride. Stay away from dealers service departments.

    Police Shootings

I am very sorry to hear of the death of Flagstaff Officer Tyler Stewart and the recent murders of several police officers. Law enforcement was never an easy job. Today it is frontline battle zone duty. Since the Ferguson incident I resumed carrying 100% of the time......even when I walk the dog. Thinking about this really bothers me. It isn't paranoia it is self preservation. Why should I need to be armed at all times to protect myself? It is because the age of the criminal is upon us and it seems as if the people of our country are not willing to do anything about it. I believe that these problems begin at home and end on the street. The degradation of our society reminds me of some of the great civilizations in history. Are we living in Rome? Just my 2 cents.
  4. I have a Slik Pro 330 DX. It isn't too heavy to pack and my 15 x 56's are steady even in the wind.

Please pray for TJ!! He was in a bad quad accident!

TJ I am very sorry to hear this. We are all praying for you. I survived a horrible slow speed atv accident 4 years ago. I am convinced that that God's grace and the Trauma Center at Scottsdale Osborn are the reason I am able to write this. I will keep praying until all is well with your recovery. You will ride again !!!

Eberlestock J107 Dragonfly Max 4 Camo

After you wash and dry your pack spray it with Silicone Water Guard or Scotchguard Outdoor. Both products can be found at Walmart. Since I used the silicone spray on my Eberlestock X2 prior to the first use it is easy to clean with just plain water and a soft brush if the blood is relatively fresh. Otherwise the baking soda paste does the job. I spray one coat and let the pack dry and then spray a 2nd coat. This lasts a year. I wash and recoat in the summer when everything dries quickly.

What is your Go-To round for Elk?

Quick answer is .300 Win Mag..... I use either a Ruger .300 Win Mag, 180 Barnes TSX, Winchester Mag Primer, 74 grains of Reloader 22. (my "old" reliable). Or if I am hunting wide open canyons or anywhere long shots may be necessary I use a custom LR .300 Win Mag, 210 Berger Hunting/Match VLD, Federal 215M Primer, 75.5 grains of H1000. Dead elk show no preference.

    Keeping a barrel clean

I have used electric tape for many years. Never a problem with accuracy, pressure etc. in 3 different rifles. The compressed air and gas that exits the barrel ahead of the bullet pops a neat hole in the tape. To keep things clean with my .300 WM that has a muzzle brake I use a cheap party balloon and tape the bottom end to secure it. The only thing I don't like about the party balloons is they will tear if a an overhanging limb grabs the end of the barrel. This year I tried out an entirely different set up on my LR .300 WM. I purchased a Solo Hunter Rifle Cover and used it everyday during my Coues hunt this year. This is the answer for me. It keeps the rifle and optics free of dust, leaves and debris. The quality of the product is outstanding. The rifle is easy to carry with the cover is place and I will use it everyday on every trip from now on regardless of which rifle I am carrying. http://tinyurl.com/opfxbtu or http://www.fettsgear.com/products/solo-hunter-rifle-cover

zero my rife and using turrets

G7 has a very good ballistic program. http://www.gseven.com/ballistic-program However you owe it to yourself and the elk or any game animal to ground proof the ballistic solutions in order to make ethical long range shots. Shoot at 3 distances beyond 200 yards(depending on your max anticipated distance) after your zeroing session. Then plug the results into the program. If you don't you will never be 100% certain where your bullet will be at any distance beyond your zero. Just my 2 cents.

Anyone have an Eberlstock X2? Is is Waterproof?

I have an X2 that is perfect for me. It isn't quite as large as you specify. Try one on at Santana or other outdoor store. I spray it with Atsko brand Silicone Water-Guard every year. I use the same product on my Kelty tent rainfly and on the tent itself. It does a good job. I also carry a large black garbage bag in my X2 just in case I am in an all day rain situation. This doesn't happen very often. The silicone spray can be found at Walmart. I spray it on virtually everything I use in the outdoors that is made of any kind of fabric. This includes outer shells, cordura gun cases, camp chairs etc. It makes clean up at the end of the season very easy as stains including blood don't seem to penetrate the fabric. I even use it on my down jacket and vest after washing.

    Good scope out to 900

I agree. This is a steal for a great high quality scope. Buy one if you can and never look back. What a deal!!!

    Live whitetail- shot in vitals

Look at the hair line where the color changes. It looks like the ragged hair line seen on a guy with a cheap toupee. No joke. Not real.

    Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50

I have the same Zeiss. It is a great scope. It is mounted on a 20 MOA picatinny rail with Farrel Industries standard height rings. With the 20 MOA rail it provides the proper elevation for my personal maximum ethical range. Any scope could have elevation issues at some point. It depends on how much elevation is built in the scope, the height of the rings and/or the MOA rail you choose and the maximum distance you intend to shoot. Be realistic about the distance when you choose a long range scope. Ask yourself if the rifle and the shooter are truly capable of making an ethical shot at that distance. Again be realistic. This is no place to let ego get involved. If the Zeiss suits your purpose buy it and don't look back.

    Richards Sporting Goods

I purchased powder and bullets at Bruno's Shooters Supply today and was asked for picture ID. They didn't record anything.......just checking. Then I remembered that I have printed "Picture ID" on the signature line of my debit and credit card. It doesn't bother me to be asked anyway. Is it an enfringement? Don't care. If it help keep things safe I'm OK with it . I try not to read anything into such situations. If you are so thin skinned that you can't deal with something as innocuous as a picture ID you need to spend some time reflecting on the timesin which we live. Just my 2 cents.

    WTB Bond Arms Snake Slayer

We built our home on a rock pile that had a significant population of packrats, kangaroo rats, mice and ground squirrels. The rattlesnake population was proportional to the rodent population. In the beginning it took me 2 years of trapping diligence which continues now after 10 years. My rat/mouse/ground squirrel kill has dropped from 2 or 3 each day to 1 or 2 /month. The payoff is that I have not seen a rattlesnake on the property for the last 3 years. Two neighbors have taken the challenge which also helps. I feed quail and doves every morning but no rattlesnakes. Keep up your trapping program. If a rattlesnake can't make a living on your proerty it will move on. (My theory has been disputed by some but it works for me.)
  24. They probably have standing contracts to provide the feds with ammo. If they break the contracts, they get sued. Federal orders come before all others. Thats why the feds can tie up the ammo production I'm thinking that the answer to the Krazy's original question is also MONEY! Ammo makers are in business to make money. Even if they didn't have a contract why on earth would they 'not' sell to the government if they're willing to buy? BTW, I agree Snapshot I'm sure they must a contract. Can you imagine the red-tape wrapped around that contract process??? lol S. Good points. I would like to know how much the government pays per round for any given caliber/cartridge designation. I suspect it would be much like NASA's hammers and the infamous $$$$$ toilet seats.
