    Shout out to TJhunt2...

From advice to dogs, to recipes, to sharing his seasoned wisdom... TJ is what we should try to be as far as outdoors-"people"....I know from getting to talk to him on and outta the forums, he's always got some way to encourage and advise. I know there's plenty of other people here, that have been graced with his presence on hunts and whatnot. Heck In the past issue of AZ elk society's Tracker mag, he can be spotted in the water project pictures. Hope retirement is all that he has hoped for. Matty

    Unit 23!

Well, now I have to officially hate the guy up the thread that his group got 9 tags, no wonder I don't get to go this year. ha ha JUST KIDDING. I had this unit last year, for my first spring tag. If, you've never hunted turkey in the spring before, its going to be amazing. I had the early hunt last spring. the season is set up like this Jr week early week late week open until mid may So we went up, and I kept my streak alive... 3 hunting seasons in a row (deer, javelin, turkey) where I doubted my existence and was sicker than all get out. I should have stayed home on each one,... but. It rained off and on. In between patching a leaky camper and trying to stay dry... we pulled two from camp. Of course, neither one was mine. I went back up to the "open season" and much to my surprise they gobbled, and they were still vocal late into the morning. Calling turkeys can be frustrating. As we had multiple toms, respond back... come to just beyond shooting range/visual range and turn and walk away.... while still answering to the calls. Like others have mentioned, member Ammon AKA Little clear creek calls, usually hosts 2 open workshops (for free). GO! Valuable tips on calls, which types of sounds, a chance to use them, and plus door prizes. ha ha. Carry different calls. Its like being at the bar on a Friday night... one "pick up line" might work for one turkey, but the next tom over might not have any interest in that sound at all. Each call (mouth, box, push button, and the variety of slates) all have different sounds and benefits. Don't go back to camp... we heard turkeys at camp, (even tried to get on them), and seen them all hours of the day. On my second ditch attempt, I had turkeys walk right past me (in tandem, so no clear shot) around noon. We had one coerced and pinned down and answering to each call we had... until he slipped past our non gunner, and went up the hill. We found that one around 2pm. Still really vocal. One technique is if you have non tag holders in camp... let them work the call. They might come from every and any direction. A floating caller, can be behind you15+ yards... so as when the bird gets leary of getting all the way up close to the caller, it is already within range of the shooter. --- I'm jealous already. I wish I could have a tag for spring bird. its like nothing other.
  3. So I missed the opportunity to go out on the day after thanksgiving. (We held dinner for our family/group and it took me the rest of my freetime to clean up ha ha). Buddy went out just east of ironwood but never heard his report. Finally caught up to him and chatted. Siad he spent all morning out and only got two doves. I'm fortunate enough to have Fridays off. Woke up, and was loading the kids backpacks into the car and killing time before I was left unwatched for the day. Seen droves of dove around the neighborhood. That was enough to push me over the edge. She took the kids to school, and went to work... I grabbed the 870, vest, and couple boxes of shells. Awesome morning for a walk. Only found one covey of quail. Apparently all the dove have began residing into the neighborhoods though. Would like to go out again, but I have never tried for the late season dove. Is it worth it? what are thoughts and opinions? Going to actually plan a trip and try for Friday, and make the most of it.
  4. where exactly is your property? ha ha...I can help you out. jk
  5. Benelli and Stoeger are made by the same company. it is gmc/Chevrolet (In my understanding of it). Guy from work bought a real nice Stoeger autoloader for about 4-450 (cant remember). I have two nice remingtons myself. Bought one brand new. Then my brother found me one with a cracked butt stock. Don't recommend the synthetic thumb through stocks for birds... especially if you aim and shoot like I do. ha ha. An afternoon of missing leads to a sore hand
  6. Audsley, That is exactly the case, well for both. When me and the girlfriend went for "icy cold refreshments"... (ok, she didn't want to pee behind a bush, so I said if we could grab a beer, she could pee with a flusher... im a gentleman after all) The owner of the Kirkland steakhouse is about 73, and ranches on the side. He was a tough old bird. The steakhouse was up for sale and he was anxious to sell the bar/restaurant/motel so he could go back to ranching full time. But in talking to him, he explained how previous hunters had trashed the ranches, and vicinity. About the trash bags and the ill effects on cattle. and that none of the ranchers would even consider allowing access through their property. On the other hand... the "richer than Scrooge McDuck" scenario is true. It is one outfit, Maughan Ranches llc (http://www.maughanranches.com/index.html). The website says they own rights to 512,00 acres in central az. With 8 of the 15 ranches located inside unit 20c. They don't have any interests in outside funding or additional resources to help wildlife enthusiasts.
  7. Need to print this and take it back up to 20c. There's a land locked section of state trust. On one trip up, me and the girlfriend stopped into the Kirkland steakhouse. Old timer/owner of the place was friendly as can be, until I asked who I should talk to about going through properties to gain access.... Basically told me to pound salt. On the eve of the deer hunt, we were set up in camp, and had a fellow hunter stop by. Said he used to live in Yarnell, and had the fortune of staying in town on this hunt. (Don't blame him, weather report was about 20 degrees colder than predicted). Said he stopped into the ranch office (there's one outfit, that pretty much owns most of the grazing/ranch land that surrounds the area). The fellow hunter said the cordial request wasn't met with a warm reception. When he tried to explain that he didn't have any interest in disturbing the ranch/cattle/peace was just hoping to gain access to the state trust behind it...the ranch rep "that was his family's private hunting area, and if he didn't like it, buy the ranch and do what he wanted with it after that".

We got 20b again. Buddy pulled one out two years ago from there. Gotta go find the rest of them again. No turkey tag. :-(, or no jr turkey for the boy. Really had my fingers crossed for those.

    Save a deer

Save a deer every season. We don't consider ourselves hunters anymore... more like "wildlife conservationists".... It helps us cope when we come home empty handed and are faced with the dilemma of finding a new recipe for the already bland "tag soup". "how'd the hunt go?" we didn't get anything "didndt get anything?" "yep, another season of keeping the wildlife safe from other hunters who actually know what the H they're doing, and filling tags". --Always a silver lining somewhere. lol

    Camo Poncho/Gillie Suit?

Bass has leafy suits. The low end ones run about 80 for the set (40 for each top and bottom). I like it. the bottoms pull over just like sweat pants, and I got a big enough size to wear over a few layers of close and I have a military style camelback, -lower profile- and depending upon the hunt, I will put It on over that as well.

22N Nov 27th Bull Elk Hunt

the 22n "thanksgiving" and "late bull" (22 is the only unit in the state with back to back rifle bull hunts in the late season) both depend on the whether. I had the thanksgiving hunt, and the following year, my buddy had the late, late bull. So the reason that the late late hunt exists, is the weather will push a large amount from the rim into 22. On our thanksgiving hunt, the cold snap hadn't happened yet and there was a large population that hadn't dropped down yet. When I talked to guys out there, there were a few that said the bulls could be up against the rim wall waiting for it to get cold. It rained and sleeted on weds of that hunt. Thursday was miserable, Friday when we packed out everything was frozen. the weather came late, good news for the late late hunt. last year, on the late late bull... it was low 60's and low 30's... until the Saturday after the hunt ended. I know it was Saturday because we made plans to drive back up with the fam to cut Christmas trees, and were met with snow from payson all the way up the rim hope for cold weather, and start against the wall

    Questions on deer habits

Heading out to 20 c next weekend for the any antlered tag in my pocket, and in one of the scouting trips one of the things to keep us awake (hit the road about 3 am after all)... Was do deer and cattle (or wildlife and cattle for that matter) frequent the same water holes? I have seen cattle come in and absolutely destroy a tank. Not that wildlife are house trained, but they don't seem to Sh!t where they drink... like cows do. Most of the tanks we found in the past, if there's heavy cattle sign there's very little wildlife sign - two in particular, I found this past trip. Lots of cattle on the tank/area sign... with only a few deer tracks. But there was also plenty of coyote track at the tank too. So maybe they pushed them out? ----------- Also, I came across an article about "rattling" for deer, pre rut (so, basically late November, early December...) The article contained a link to "rattling forks", which of course wants you to buy their brand. Does this technique work? anyone ever tried rattling? The theory is bucks are beginning to collect up does, and stake out territories, and that when bucks hear other deer fighting, they will naturally be curious? Just wondering what the "seasoned" hunters think of this/

    Bushnell Tanks - Muley

I have heard two different versions of the story. (might be the same story) the combined version is, after a fire in the area, a kid on a quad was out riding and wound up dying. The family attempted to sue the state/forest service/game and fish/??? So in a way to avoid settlement.... they locked the gate, called it "a regrowth area", and have no plans to open it. I have token the mountain bike back in there. Others on here have told me about deer behind the gate. but there's no access to it. so you have to hike it in or out. I know there's a road that come s out on the other end by punkin center (we did the jeep trail from bushnell tanks over the ridge a few times).... but the last time I had a deer tag in there, we attempted going up the back side of ord to gain access, and instead of a gate, the state placed giant boulders over the road to end access that way

Kayakers - How do you transport you Kayak?

well, I haven't seen the inside of a Colorado for a long time. In my full sized dodge with a 6 foot bed, I could haul two kayaks pretty easy. I just left the tailgate up and nose them in to the bed. Yes, they do stick up and out, but no one has ever bothered me. When I do three or four kayaks, its the same method, but I would place them on their side and stab all four into the back of the truck. (looks kinda like a giant comb out of the back). I could get by with one strap on the back end, putting tension on the "up in the air end" to draw them towards the cab, and I was able to either use a load bar or a second strap towards the front of the kayaks, to keep them from cantilevering out of the truck. ---for four kayaks, I would just use more straps. particularly on the back end. If it makes you more comfortable, I used to have an old red shirt I would tie on heavy weekend days when going to the lake. My buddy used to have an s-10 and he could fit three kayaks in , similar methods, just fine when we would do the river run. (we would put one truck at the bottom and kayak from the top). I have pictures if you want to see, I just don't have any here on the pc. When I hauled my canoe (before I got the ladder rack) I would square it up on the cab of the truck and use the foam block kits (sportsmans and dicks has them-for canoes and kayaks). Even if the Colorado doesn't have stake pockets, I think theres a lashing cleat in each corner. or look at puttint them in .... way easier to throw the kayak in and just go. Now with this truck, I have carried 4 kayaks, a canoe, a folding picnic table, a tailgater grill, and of course the ice chest all in one trip. Might be a sight to see, but everyone had fun at the water that day.

  22. So, I have been trying to do some research and now that the cooler weather is here, I need to fix my pop up camper. She's a Butte that's for sure. 1979 coleman. We took it out in July and trying to set it up, the wiffletree: stripped out. this is the screw mechanism underneath the cabling hooks too. Coleman's out of business, and replacement parts are about $400. I have found knock off parts for around $180 (Plus shipping). Was hoping to find a cheaper and local alternative before I click send and spend that much. I have to old one out, and can go anywhere if I have to. I work in gilbert, and live in san tan. so somewhere out this way would be handy

    wanted machine shop (east valley)

I called Tim already, but never returned my call. I will try again. I've used Tim for both work and personal stuff. Was looking for members that might do it to. I will try him again though The rod isn't stripped, its the nut that travels up and down that the cables attach to. I'm assuming its all original equipment. Doing my research, the new designs are even worse. They have a plastic darin nut. I tired a few dealers, and they all have said the cutoff for spare parts is 8 years. Plenty of internet providers for parts in general, but I have only found 3 that supply the wiffletree. The thread isn't standard coarse or fine thread. Ive seen similar thread on valve gates ("square thread") but those shafts are about 1" and this is about 1/2") Thanks everyone for the input. Deer season is in November, gotta get it fixed. :-)
