Rain, more rain, hail then snow

we were in 23. I got a cold/sore throat that I toted all turkey camp weekend long. That's an awesome picture of the snow. Thought we had it rough. rain and sleet Friday afternoon, rained Friday night. Saturday at about 5 it rained until at least 6 (that's when I hit the snooze button). And again sunday afternoon. One decent day of weather, Monday when we had to pack up and go home. congrats on the turkey tag filling. We got 2 of the 4 filled for our group

    Turkey/predator hunting

Nice work. Aman (Little Creek Calls) in his turkey workshop talked about wearing "aqua velvet" to keep the predators out of one's turkey stand. Said he's brang coyotes in and bears for that matter trying to entice birds to come out. --- Took my buddy for his first ever turkey hunt in 22 last year for fall bird. Left late due to work/etc and had camp set up about 10pm. Out drinking a beer, discussing strategies and the 'yotes lit up. Well with everything out and ready I grabbed my box call. brang the coyotes in to the edge of the darkness before they busted us and took off. That's when the new guy went to sleep. ha ha

    Free Dodge Grill

I had a 2001 dodge 1500 for a number of years. a friend of a friend passed along their factory take off grill when they replaced theirs with the billet one. I sold my 01 last month (upgraded to a '05 4x4). and came across the grill in my shed. Just seeing if anyone here has the need for it, before I recycle it. I can put a picture up in the next few days. Going to 23 for turkey camp Thursday. (can send it to Tucson via my brother after camp) let me know

    uint 23 youth report

Wow, thanks! I was hoping for pictures and success stories, but that's even more information! We camp just below young and have seen a few birds in there. Scouting a little while back called in one hen about 20 ft from us. and later down the road had a gobbler come in about 20 yards. with the terrain, we weren't able to see him. Spring bird is way different already. Were you part of the JR's turkey camp?

    uint 23 youth report

Hey guys, going up for my early bird tag on Thursday. Was just curious if anyone has come back down the hill from 23 with success stories to help fill the last long few days before my first spring tag. Really excited about seeing the difference after years of fall turkey. looks like 60% rain for the opener though Matty

Tim McGraw Anti-Gunner!1....What a buzzzz kill!!

Its all one big chit-pot of music these days. It started when Garth started prancing all over the stage way back when. There's just as much rap and drum machine in country music as there is on hip hop stations. Speaking of oddities (-not trying to hijack the thread-) but this goes right along with Liam Nieson being violently opposed to guns. He was asked about the gun usage in all of his films , and he said It was "just make believe" and people don't need guns

    Newbie turkey hunter

I too was in 23. seen one crossing the road. was playing with my box call and had a hen close in on me to about 20 ft. and then in a third spot was using the box again and had a tom gobble back at me. Because of the terrain though, he never showed himself. talked to a coworker in a different department. She said they were camping in 23 and heard them all over. Gonna be a long week and a half till we leave to set up camp

My lead likes Lo Lo Mai (near Sedona). he's got a toy hauler and can get it there. So depending how big ya got, shouldn't be too much of a problem, http://lolomai.com/ Have you looked into the KOA's up there?

Bald Eagle & other photos from my canoe trip

Sorry... hit post way too soon. What I meant to add after the pdf: There's two reasons to portage the boat. Low flow, or high flow. I've "'yak'd on the salt" (as my brother in law dubbed it) before. Early may the flow was so low, we had to get out and walk a few different sand bars. The verde has some Class III areas that I would probably walk through as well at times. Maybe we can organize a CWT kayak adventure down the verde. As SwivelHead told me, the fishing is pretty decent all the way down. Saves on packing bulky things like spaghetti o's.... just hope we catch something or we might starve Matty

Bald Eagle & other photos from my canoe trip

I haven't been brave enough or found the time to ever do the trip myself. SwivelHead sent me a pm about the trips he's done on it. He may be able to chime in with some information. I did a lot of research on it before, but never got the chance to go. There is definitely a target CFM to look for. To slow, and it will be a lot of walking. Too fast and it will be white knockled all the way down (from what ive read). Prescott NF has a pdf guidebook that's really informative with distances, camp locations, and closed areas. http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fswdev3_009800.pdf

    unit 23 camping

A favorite of mine is Circle Ranch trail head, at Reynolds creek. If your familiar with the workman's creek area, it is about a mile up the road. So at the risk of opening up one of my favorite destination spots to the whole wide world, this is why I like it. We use this spot for deer and turkey base camp. It says "trail head" but the circle drive goes in deep enough and has a few different areas to spread apart from other people there. I took my sister and her family (they were pretty green for camping) here. It's got an outhouse, so that was a plus. Plenty of shade and an open meadow for the kids (its across the fence). There are three hiking trails close by (two from camp). One is short, about a 1/4 mile down to Reynolds creek that is always flowing. it is not an "established" camp ground, but does have fire pits in the ground. On deer last year, we had coyotes come through camp in the middle of the night to look for scraps. other nearby features... Workmans creek is fun. There's indian ruins on the cliff face just above the water gauge station. If you take the road to the top of Aztec peak, the ranger will normally let you look out from his tower. Close to the tower, one of the previous rangers made a "flinstone bluff" (he took rocks and made chairs, a table and its pretty neat especially for the kids). Directly across from Circle ranch is I believe fr 410, that takes you up to an entirely different view than the fire tower provides). It s a long haul down to the head waters for Roosevelt but the fishing by the bridge is supposed to be pretty cool. There's also a tower on McFadden peak to go up and look around at too. The big draw backs are, don't forget anything! its about a 2 hr rounder either direction to young or globe for anything. The coyotes, if people are timid. And it sits across the creek from the Tonto group site. - We had a scouting trip that didn't turn out so well with the 2 dozen or so 20 yr olds out that apparently didn't need to sleep at all that weekend.

Bald Eagle & other photos from my canoe trip

that looks like an awesome trip/ Ive seen eagles from my kayak on the salt and on canyon lake. (Woods canyon has a G&F viewing of the nest every year). Ive drifted and watched the eagles perched and hunting from my floating kayak. Something that may never happen, but on my bucket list is too kayak/float down the Verde. Doable from November to April. 60 miles (from the edge of Camp Verde-or 70 if you include CV). only one access point about Childes area, 18 miles down stream. and then next point of contact would be bartlet lake.
