    unit 8 draw

Scout A-LOT! We got that hunt last year. My buddy swears by that unit, and we've been for everything there in the past few years. Last years deer hunt was horrendous though. If i can recall i only heard of 4 deer. we followed some does but never found any bucks. Now that i scared you.... we always went through town, and then out 4th st ( Which turns into perkinsville rd which is also county road 73). Camped back in the locket tank vicinity. here is lots of water on the east side of Co73 (tanks, white horse lake, jd dam) so just have to work he spots. Forest road 108 (on the west) will work back up to I40 so theres spots and tanks back that way. The western area of he unit (by Ash Fork) is all scrub cedar, or so im told. Never ventured that far west.

    Woods canyon lake project?

I was lucky enough to have a four day weekend for the holiday. Spent the first two by upper lake mary, and then went on to woods canyon lake. The first day at woods canyon lake was decent (for the 4 of us), but with little action on my own pole i started picking up trash. Between me and another buddy within 30 minutes we had half of a 55 gallon trash bag filled up. Which leads me to a few thoughts: #1 does anyone on CWT know of any other outdoor groups that participate in a lake clean up? #2 Would CWT be willing to affiliate and or participate in an area* clean up? #3 Who would be willing to commit to helping out. My thoughts: i would either be willing to help another outdoor group clean up an area (much like they do in the 36b unit). Or if we could orchestrate a clean up effort hosted by CWT, id be willing to help with that also. I figure even if its just a single day event. Fish in the morning until the bite slows. spend a couple hours cleaning the lake and then hang out with some friends afterwords. With the rains that hit the rim over the weekend im sure the band will soon be lifted and it can be a good "something to do" on a camping trip. *Area: if it works out, or comes with any success we could do 3 or 4 different spots throughout the year (once every 3 or 4 months) Anyone else have any input? its our forest, lead by example, and another chance to show that hunters are more stewards of the land than harvesters.

    forrest service litter

Even worse than that..... I was lucky enough to find myself at woods canyon lake the past couple of days for fishing. Me and my buddy spent 30 minutes filling a 55 gallon trash bag (about half full) of garbage from the shore line.... and thats just the area where we fished. ignorance and laziness to just throw it down and not pack it out. Be what boggles my mind, is there has to be a certain degree of "outdoorsman" that would lead one to the waters edge to enjoy the day. Are people that ok with trash to just contribute, rather than keeping it clean.

    Apache Sitgreaves closure

as found on ASNF website: FOREST CLOSURES—BLACK MESA RANGER DISTRICT Release Date: Jun 28, 2011 Continued rising temperatures, extemely dry forests, current wildfires on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, and the forecast of possible dry-lightning in the area this week has prompted officials of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests to impose additional Forest Closures. Black Mesa District Ranger Dee Hines reported at a community of near 300 people Saturday night in Heber, “We will be closing the rest of the Black Mesa District, but have decided to keep some manageable areas open.” He added, “I need to stress that closures mean closures to all public. Where are you at? and any way we can come look at her?
  17. So we have an older model pop up camper. I know that on some of the newer models they come factory-hard wired with a built in Carbon Monoxide alarm for the models that have a heater. So after waking up to 11 degrees two mornings in a row on an elk hunt, and last seasons deer hunt with a brisk 25 degree temp i broke down and bought a little buddy heater to use on coming hunts. I know that they come with built in devices such as automatic shut off for tipping, and a co2 monitor. I also know that several forums said to not rely on the Co2 sensor it comes with. I wanna buy a battery powered Co2 monitor for the camper, and i know they make them. Does anybody have any recommendations? The lower end ($20 price range) say that there is a temperature range of 40-100 degrees on them. Well, even with a little buddy doing all it can, it may not overcome the 11 degree outside tempreature. I would #1 hate to buy one if it doesnt work. And #2 if it gets cold enough that it wont work for us in the pop up. Thanks for the insight everyone.
  18. Is it too soon to start wondering about next quail season? ha ha I know last season was bad because the amount of rain (too much, all at one time). But from what ive seen of rain falls for this year, we are still below what we should normally have. Just anxious to get back out at it. Good luck with the fall draw too btw.

    "Spring Fever" feed (woods canyon)

Went up to woods canyon for the day this past saturday. Kinda realized how i grew up deprived (ha ha) as i wasnt exposed to fishing as a kid. Most people that we talked to had fairly good luck with just power bait. I didnt get any niblles at all. And after being "drafted" to untangle and repair my girlfriends reel the trout seemed to come alive. Of the four of us that went though, we onyl caught one (and had to put it back). but for those of you looking for some weekend fun... Woods canyon has been stacked with some 4500 trout in the past few weeks. Hopefully you can brave the crowds for the holiday weekend. good luck

    Bowhunting Rabbits

Im kinda new to the small game aspect of rabbit hunting. I know some people posted recipes (in the food section) and mentioned eating rabbits in this thread. Whats the deal?... every one i talk to said to only hunt/eat them in months ending in "R". Is that true? something to do with parasites, fleas, and ticks. Is there a safe handling method to make them worth while all year round?
  21. So, we are on a "test drive" of a two year old german shorthaired pointer. Last night was our first night, but he shows alot of potential. Unfortunaetly, the dog we got is a 2 yr old male so some of the fundamental stuff might be long over due, or too late (as far as hunting is concerned). This is my first GSP, and im pretty clueless. Was looking for information and tips on how to start. I already spoke to Desert pheasants out in coolidge, but was looking for something a little more local and a little cheaper (in case he turns into a love hound, and not a bird dog ha ha). Walked him past the neighbors house last night before bed and he pointed on the concrete statue-ette of a horse pulling a cart (about the size of a tonka truck). hillarious.

    Dog training?

Thanks everyone for the information, both public and private. As soon as the dog settles in i will start the training. .... and hopefully tales of success come next season
  23. Been following your posts. man she looks like a great dog. Did you join Desert Pheasant, out in coolidge? how do you like it? Im in the process of adopting a 2 yr old GSP, wanna take him out to see if he has interests in birds

    Dog training?

Forgot to mention, think he has had some beginner training. the rescue group said the original owner kept him staked to a tree outside. But he is friendly and happy. We tried feeding the neighbor kids to him, but the dog didnt seem to care about the little people ha ha. Also, by the time we went to sleep, we either refreshed his memory for "sit" or he is an awefully fast learner and she had him working on "down". --- My guess is since i only wanted to go look, and she used her power to outvote me to take the dog home.... we are going to keep the dog irregardless of his hunting desires. (i couldnt justify spending big bucks on a dog that would be a pet most of the year, since im pretty new to quail hunting as well). Any easy way to test him out on being gun friendly, other than the obvious? The "foster dad" for the dog said he did great off leash. Just a little leary of trying that too soon, until he knows where his new home is. ha ha
