many, but never puked personally. Only once - police academy 1994 - obstacle course "best of three" trials on week 12. Trying to beat my first 2 times, pushing hard, and the pea gravel hill at the end got the best of me. Number 3 was better - but not by nearly enough - LOL You know what was the most telling of the timed trials. You could accept your first time provided it met minimum standard and not do the other two. The guys who opted out after one didn't try very hard, hi the minimum allowed, accepted mediocrity, took their grade and left their pride behind. You could absolutely see it in their eyes but they did it anyway. I'm not advocating push 'til you puke. Yeah - a few of us did and probably would again give the event & circumstances. That day has never left me. I witnessed "justgoodenough" in person. I still push myself & I've been close a few time since then. Now I know when to say when.

Yesterday - solid leg day Core, arms, shoulders & cardio today. Actually core and cardio almost everyday. Sometimes a lot - sometimes just enough to wake up. Those 2 things are my mainstays. They allow me to eat Chinese takeout with fried rice and not turn into a beach ball.
  3. Healy Arms - you are an animal. Not sure what kind - but a true animal. LOL - probably not. Maybe a air conditioned animal. But not too bad for a 46 yr old with limited time to stay fit. I can hump hills far better today than I could just a few years ago. I'm never limited by roads or how far my quad will take me. Speaking of no limitations due to road access. I humped 3 miles across a crappy steep canyon to a road-less area in Unit 23 last year. I finally get over there and the FIRST deer that pops out of this little Manzanita snag in the middle of nowhere is easily over 110 inches - awesome buck. It was late Nov and I had an elk tag - the buck was safe. But it certainly proved a point - that big deer was there because very few people are willing to go get him. AND Then there was the time I was glassing some decent bucks in Unit 31 in the wilderness area. I glassed back toward the main road and watched some guys glassing from their pickup - using the edge truck bed to steady their elbows so they could get their glass on. Later that evening they stopped by my camp and asked if I'd seen any deer. I told them I had, and asked how their day had gone. I was shocked & amazed to hear that they "didn't see anything all day". I even shared the the general location of where I'd walked to and told them the deer I passed might be what they were seeking. The driver, scoffed at the idea and lectured me that there was NO REASON to walk that far, as "his uncle had killed a good buck right from the road last season". I told him a broken clock is right 2 times a day too.

"or perhaps he was just looking for his pride and dignity under the bush" The last time I heard that I was working on Apache Blvd and the reference was "dude - you'll never find your dignity at the bottom of a plastic liquor bottle and a bag of spicy Cheetos" LOL

    Monday Check in

Friends don't let friends skip leg day. Good friends mix in cardio just make it horrific. Thought I was going to blow out an artery But it's over with and that's a darn good way to start another round of 7 days. Onward
  6. Easy day: Went to the gym with air conditioning - you know - the kinda gym where skinny girls show up in makeup and perfect hair. Power Mill (modern version of a stairmaster) 120 floors in 33 minutes - burned up 500 calories. 100 sit ups - done. Another 7-day stretch in the books.
  7. Welcome to the thread sir. You hopped on right at the time I was making excuses for not walking my 4 miles today. It's not even uphill and I was procrastinating. Well - no better time than now. Thank you. Catch up later...
  8. Pushed hard today - way harder than I set out to. I checked out mentally a few times but stayed in it. Cardio + strength building + limited rest + relentless pace = long hour dropped almost another pound - boom - I'll take it Easy day tomorrow

    Monday Check in

Hey - start back with something - easy walks or light days lifting.. Ramp it up as you can. Just quit telling yourself "tomorrow" I had a buddy who needed to lose over 100 lbs FINALLY meet me for a workout. He's fighting his way back - day by day. So far he's stayed motivated and lost over 40 pounds. The whole country is too big. Now is the time to re-calibrate for so many people.
  10. By the way - welcome to the forum - graduated from the shadows to posting. Like it
  11. Hey - I made my workout - 7 days a week is holding so far. Eating right - weight dropping. Tomorrow I have the day off of work so I will crank out a hard workout. Sunday - something easy. Monday - back to full engagement. Truth is: when you workout and prepare the days hunting are better - period.
  12. Beat the sun out of bed. Humid as heck and pretty warm already. Need a gym with AC. Still sore from yesterday. 90 minutes - get it over with. Hey - it ain't all about the deer tag: Half of US Adults Diabetic or Pre Diabetic- Most is Type 2 "Almost 40 percent have pre-diabetes, meaning elevated blood sugar levels that could lead to full-fledged disease. Studies have shown lifestyle changes can delay or prevent diabetes in these people." Combine this with the fact that 75% of the country is overweight or obese and being more focused on fitness is a good thing. I supposed the deer tag is just an excuse to do more. A good excuse.

cw4192 - Man... I just don't know. That's a weighty assertion. I'm not a CrossFit guy but the hunters I know who are - religious about the workouts and the Paleo lifestyle - are freaking hillside rock stars. Lean, light endurance machines. I know a few other guys that don't CrossFit but have different, but similar functional workout & eating styles and they too can pound out the miles - day after day. Task driven outdoorsmen who prepare. The guys that drive me nuts are the guys that have one good day in them. Raring to go Friday and ready to roll over & sleep in Saturday morning. Totally unprepared for the long haul. Uhhmmmm... before you go back to sleep, can you tell me again where you said you saw that 375?

Great Monday - good overall fitness week despite work being busy
  15. With less than 70 days to my hunt I've decided to take on a 7-day a week regimen - I know how bad it sucks to spend the hunting day yelling at yourself for not getting physically ready to hump hills, So I'm all in for the next 2+ months. I have been pretty religious about a 5-day a week workout schedule combined with a way too lackluster gut building eating program. I'm putting an end to that as well. No days off - no pizza - no cheeseburgers - no burritos. But hey - what about a rest day? Your body needs time to recover. There is a rest day. Sunday is an easy day - but you MUST do something. A leisurely 4 mile walk (4 little ol' city blocks). A low resistance hour jaunt on a elliptical machine. A bike ride. Something that is not damaging but is good movement. The other 6-days are purposely tough - lots of cardio - even while lifting. I started Saturday the 5th. This was my warm up: 33 minutes on a Stair Master - consistent 60 steps a minute - 500 calories. Then 100 sit ups - and 15,000 total pounds of random hi-rep presses, pull downs, etc. Good form and full functional range of motion is essential - we're training to do a task - no jerky gonna be injured soon lifting. Rest in between? No - not really. Sunday - easy day - 5 miles on an elliptical machine - heart rate in the low 130's - just under 600 burned calories - nothing extra that day Monday - back at it. Spent an hour at a new place in Scottsdale - 130 degree torture chamber - functional fitness strength & relentless high cardio type workout. Then went to my regular place and blasted through another 18 minute 1000ft vertical climb on an incline hiker and 100 sit ups. Tomorrow will look a lot like Monday. My hope is I get a few more of you on this thread in the mix. I think this will be beneficial to anyone who decides to participate and push against their norms. Remember - you're competing ONLY with yourself and what you could do yesterday.

    Monday Check in

I'm headed to a new place I joined in South Scottsdale right now - only been a handful of times. It was 2x a week. Now it's 3x. Hot, crappy, tough workouts. Good so far - like it. I'll check back in shortly.
  17. We need to keep the Monday thing alive. Why? I'm not starting from where I was approx 2 years ago and this forum had a lot to do with that. I have been far more aware of my fitness because of the emails generated by these threads. It's a simple reminder - don't slip. Was I perfect? Heck no. Never intended to be. Did I both gain & lose ground at different times. Yes. But fitness and making my workouts has been top of mind. For the most part I have maintained and and gained. This will be a good hunting year for me. I'm going to bust my tail for the next 60ish days and really roll thru the hills. For my hunting buddies that sit around? Not so much. And yes - I will hunt solo because of it.

    Any traffic lawyer on cw?

Hi Adam - I was a traffic cop for several years. If you'd like to give me the rundown I'd be happy to listen and give any insight I can. Off the top of my head - here are a few points: Civil traffic court is a 51% sway to get the judgement in your favor - not proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Tip the scale of proof/evidence your way and you're deemed not responsible. Provided you're not sitting on some criminal tickets, you have a reasonable shot. I did not see the civil bench in Tempe or any other city I appeared in, favor one side or the other - any party that came prepared to make a logical case based on the law purportedly violated was given good & fair consideration I never had a citizen with an attorney win their case against my charges. But the people who self represented with a case of logical explanations and evidence surrounding the statute(s) charged did occasionally sway the hearing officer. In my experience, the hearing officers are prepared to give plenty of weight to educated & logical statements made by defendants. Emotional ranting to the judge is pointless (i.e. sorority girl blathering and repeated use of the work "like"). Study the statue(s) charged, take the time to prepare in advance and present reasons and evidence as to why you're not responsible and you have a reasonable shot in traffic court. Call me at the shop 480-621-5555 on Monday if you like. Thx - Healy

Thanks Amanda - come on by next time your down here. I'm getting ready to post an ammo special for CW folks.
  25. It was nearly a year since the first email was exchanged with our realtor that we needed a larger/nicer location, to the day we turned the key and opened the doors - a long year of planning, construction delays, city inspection & permit issues delays and a host of other unforeseen issues. But, in the end, we prevailed and it was a year very well spent. We got off a very good start in the first & humble HEALY Store in Mesa. We thank the Coues Whitetail family members for their support in our first three years. We coudln't have thrived without the support of the Arizona hunting community - thank you all. In the first "quiet open" week, we've already seen a few CW members in the new Tempe location and we'd like to invite the rest of you to come see us and check out the new place. We'll be putting out CW ONLY specials on the forum - but feel free to ask while you're there if there's a CW special running. We're even easier to find now - at 1809 E Baseline Rd, Tempe - right off of the US 60 and the 101 freeways on the southeast corner of Baseline and McClintock Mon - Fri : 10am to 6pm Sat: 10am - 5pm Sunday: Closed - Find us at the range The Tempe store is far superior to the last location - more room to shop - more products to choose from - easier to navigate - brighter lights - same low prices - same attentive service and special order & layaway programs. Here's a look so far: Easy to get to from all over the Valley Over 40 feet of long guns - don't see what you want? Just ask. We'll order it. Upper assemblies for AR's and Revolvers Semi-Auto Pistols - by brand & model See that empty handgun peg? It's already filled again A full aisle of rifle ammo for your next hunt and an endcap of personal defense hand gun ammo for your home protection gun Some of the shotgun ammo Reloading supplies Cleaning & Maintence
