This Weekend - Dealer Days Are Back at HEALY Arms

Thank you AGAIN to the CW community. We had a fantastic Dealer Day event and put several hunting type gun owners into suppressors for their rifles. Everything from 243's to 7mm Mags to Creedmoors to 300 Win Mags - we had a solution for everyone. I, personally, was reluctant to get my first can several years ago and now hate hunting without one. Countrywide, It's really catching on. It was a busy event and the business you do with us is appreciated.

  13. Since we're really into capturing lions on camera for the purpose of locating and calling them, getting a good photo is important so we don't spend time calling for small / juvenile lions or into areas that have females with kittens and no tom activity. We like to get a full-body camera shot and make a determination if that's an area worth spending our hunting hours calling into. One of the early problems we had with trail cameras, and one that lots of guys I talk to have had, is getting the cat to slow down it's face-paced walk enough to get more than a butt shot. Like this: We've found that the easiest way to get the cougar to stop cold for a photo, several photos, or a video is to take a lion scat from another area and drop it on the trail your camera is set up on. It works for us like gold--they seem to be unable to just walk by--their DNA says they have to investigate. One of our favorite nighttime photos is of this impressive and very muscular cougar. That's a 4-legged deer eating machine. That lion scat came from another lion travel area about 15-20 miles away. This next lion is also a full grown lion, but has a smaller head and is most likely a female, although it is very hard to be certain without a "different view". We got a few photos of this lion and never saw her with kittens nor did we see a big tom cruising around checking her out either. This one is a mystery. But it's a muture lion nontheless and a good lion to call for--a caller's trophy any day of the week. The lion turd that stopped this lion was from a deep drainage about 5-6 miles away. If you're interested in getting good lion photos, I hope this trick helps. Good calling, Mark Healy

Who was in the wrong here?

Attorneys love to flex with the cops and cops, like all of us really, hate to be wrong and called out. Very common thing. Knowing this is half the battle. The other half is knowing what protections citizens have via the constitution and the various court cases that have shaped current application of 1st, 4th & 5th amendments (these come up the most in daily policing) in daily practical/modern situations is the other half. As an officer it's wise to respect the intentions of the country's framers, know you're an agent of the government with limited but potent authority and stay calm. Going thru an ego posturing session is pointless and usually makes you look foolish. Walking away tail-tucked knowing you should have shut the heck up 1-5 minutes ago sucks, so know when to do that. My opinion on the encounter is thus: The officers should have approached the encounter as a conversation -- are you guys here for a hunt? No? Just camping? Great. Now create some small talk if it's possible and have a positive contact with the folks while staying aware while listening for contradictory statements and looking for signs of illegal activity. Unless you've seen something, heard something or witnessed an activity that can be construed as "hunting" you're really at the mercy of the man's statement, and quite honestly most people aren't doing crooked stuff so just chill out and talk to people. I have a many years-old experience in this specific arena from the citizen side. A group I was with was approached by AZGFD while we were legit camping, fireside sitting & beer/soda drinking -- no other activities -- and the guy was insistent on seeing our hunting licenses. He was refused that request because no one was hunting and we had nothing more than carry pistols inside the vehicles. The dude kinda lost his marbles and started to get angry. Then he wanted to search ice chests. He was declined that request, but kindly offered a chair, a spot at the fire and something cold to drink. Eventually he had to just leave. His whole approach sucked. It was a strange encounter and definitely a one-off. Never had that happen before or since. Everybody has the occasional bad day and I simply let it go. The most effective cops I've worked with were short on flex and big on being knowledgeable professionals who were approachable and widely conversant. They were far from being pushovers, but they knew when to apply authority and force and that was always when they needed to and legally could. It's all in the approach. That's my two cents. Mark Healy

I painted a house, barn and large shed with a Hobo Freight Avanti sprayer. No complaints. Pull the trigger - if you do the cleaning and maintenance, it’s a solid sprayer. It ate 5 gallon buckets for lunch and put even & generous coverage everywhere I wanted and it.
