We had some boys in town from Missouri for a predator calling trip. I asked them if they'd like to go after coyotes, fox, bobcat or a lion. Of course they said they'd like to get a lion while they were here (as if it's that easy). Then - one of them jokingly said "hey, let's get one of each". I said, that's a tall order in 2.5 days - let's get rolling pronto....
Well - we got 3 of the 4. Started out on day one with a coyote on the opening stand. A mix of coyote vocals and small prey distress closed the deal:
Picked up and hauled butt for a place to get a fox with thick fur and lots of red in the coat. Found the right one on day two:
Stayed in generally the same area and called the deep wooded cuts for a bobcat. As day 2 was coming to a close - bam - here he comes to a mix of young female coyote vocals, rodents, birds, a rabbits and - boom - down he goes:
Evidently the half day we had left just wasn't enough time for me to get a mountain lion called up too. Oh well. It certainly wasn't for a lack of effort.
All were called with a Wildlife Technologies Might Atom 21 electronic call. All were shot with DPMS Compact Hunter rifles. It probably goes without saying - yes - those are items we stock at HEALY.
And, if you've never heard a Mighty Atom e-caller - do yourself a favor and come on in for a demo. Please bring your current caller with you for comparison's sake. It's time to hear what your predators have been missing.

So...
A guy comes in the store to get some GLOCK 17 mags. Roger tells him yes we have them right here, and hands the guy a mag.
The guy says - this is a high-cap mag, do you have a 10 rounder?
Roger says - oh you must live in California
The guy says - no I live in Tucson, but the current federal government mandate is for 10 rounder mags
Roger says - yes, but you live in a free state and the federal magazine ban expired, you can can have the good ones
The guy says - yes but the maximum mandated by the current administration is 10 rounds. I'm going to support them and only buy 10 rounders.
As I scratch my head and think, good lord - you just can't make this stuff up...

We helped coordinate some Army Company rifle/pistol purchases & transfers while some of our AZ Guard guys were overseas in Afghanistan. Once they'd gotten back home and had picked up their new firearms & gear they asked us what they owed us. Of course the answer was nothing - thanks for serving, aim small miss small and have a great week...
Well - they returned the favor today with this shadowbox thank you. To say the least, we were really taken aback with the level of class these guys demonstrated.

Definitely no shortage of Lions on the rez thats for sure and i remember the reason the electronic calls were taken out was because originally 76-1 did not allow them so we had to go by that, there's supposed to be a monthly commission mtg next Thursday so maybe it can be addressed there since this other change has taken effect.DAN

The burden to prove a crime beyond a resonable doubt rests with the state (at least it's supposed to). In the absence of some evidence to present to a judge that shows the simultaneous actions of pursuit of a particular species and available method of take, what probable cause for arrest is there? Looking at a deer through binoculars in the adsence of a deer tag and the presence of a rifle doesn't prove intent to kill that deer. There simply needs to be more to make a case. Heck the 2nd Ammendment puts the rifle legally in your possession - "I carry this rifle because I don't know who or what I'll run into out here". G&F officers have their work cut out for them - getting to probable cause in the vastness of the AZ wilderness is tough.
If would be great if a sworn G&F could weigh in and give their 2 cents from a position of experince and past cases.
