    Turkey's are silent in 6a

My son has a youth tag in 6A this weekend. I have spent the last two weekend scouting in area that has always been productive. We have walked miles and miles and have only seen three tracks, no scratches, and no poop. We had the same problem last year for the first time. Maybe some kind of die off?? If some one wouldn't mind passing along an area in 6A where there is some active turkey sign for my son's hunt, we would be very grateful. Thanks, Mark

    Colorado pot

In three days, pot will be legal in the Peoples Republic of Colorado. However, Hi-cap mags are still illegal. Just the way the government wants you: doped up and unarmed.
  3. Can anyone recommended a good smith to work on a semi auto12ga shotgun. North Phoenix area would be great . Thanks, Mark

    Paralized hunter makes ultimate decision

My Gorilla harness failed a few years back and I fell 20 feet. I landed on my wrist, which is now totally jacked. But it could have easily been my head or neck. A few years ago, Treestandman, who was a major contributor to this forum, fell and severely injured his back. He became addicted to pain killers, which eventually contributed to his suicide. Don't screw around. Get a high quality, well designed safety harness. My harness was a Gorilla harness designed by peasants in China, that's why it failed. Also, have a way back to the ground. Many guys suffocate because the can't get out of their harness once they have fallen. Mark

    Buyer Beware @ cabelas

Everyone knows that the prices are a little higher @ cabelas. In the past, they always price match on local competitors with local stock. I wanted a new shotgun, and the one that I settled on was $1250 @ sportsmans warehouse and $1400 @ cabelas. Pretty big difference, even for cabelas. I filled out all the paperwork and went to checkout, and big surprise! "We don't price match any more". Call the manager,ok. Manager: "Won't price match it. The best that I can do is $50 gift card". Well gee, i may be a little slow, but not a complete idiot! I went to sportsmans to get my new shotgun! I geuss that's its time to start shopping around instead of blindly wondering into cabelas. Wolves - it's time to step up and comment

Well it has been a few years since I have been assassinated on this topic on CWT.com, so I guess that it is time again. Here it goes! I am stepping up and commenting! It’s all about greed! Most hunters hate wolves because for every animal the wolves eat, that is one less animal that they can hunt. Greed. The AZ Elk Society hates wolves because they think that wolves are a threat to the elk tags. Greed. Ranchers hate wolves because wolves sometimes eat cows. Well, the way it used to be was that wolves were in the forest and cows weren’t. Public land ranchers are pubic land parasites. Ranchers pay the Fed $1.30 per month per cow to have cows in your forest. The only problem is that it costs the Fed over $10 per month per cow to administer the grazing lease. (Don’t trust me on the numbers; they are from the GAO – Government Accounting Office) That is $8.70 per month per cow of your tax dollars going to subsidize cows in your forest that $hit all over and compete with elk for food. If you took the cows off public land, you could probably double the elk population with the extra forage, and you wouldn’t even need to worry about the wolves. You might say, “I still want to buy my steak at the grocery store!” You still can, because most of the steaks (98%) come from private range and feed lots. The problem is not wolves, its cows! You might say,”my great great grand pappy helped settle Arizona by ranching.” Well, along with hunting whatever wherever whenever you wanted, the days of the Marlboro man are gone. Time to join the 21st century. The arguments in the letter above are nothing but a bunch of procedural BS gripes. Tell me the real reason you hate wolves. Can any hunter give me one reason to hate wolves besides the notion that the wolves might reduce tag numbers? (Don't bother with the "human attacked by wolves" argument. Wolf attacks are non-existent compared to bear attacks.) Like I said, it’s all about greed! OK, let the insults fly (like last time). I’m headed up to unit 9 to help a friend, so I won’t be around to read them until next week. Mark

    Polaris Quad problem

I have a 2006 Polaris 500 EFI. I was having the same problem for over a year. The shop wanted put in a new fuel pump/tank for $700. I passed. Finally I figured out that the problem only occured going up/ down a hill WHEN the fuel tank was under 1/2 full. I still need to pull the tank to figure out the cause.. Fuel slosh and or vacume/venting problems? For now I just keep it filled until I can get to it. Mark
  8. You guys crack me up!! Why are you so surprised? What do you expect from an agency who has a commissioner that votes suspend a hunter’s license for five years for shooting a prairie dog out of season. A year later, the same commissioner does the same thing and whines about getting cited and claims that he did not know about the season: http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/34635-commissioner-husted-suspends-hunters-license-for/?hl=husted Then the charges are dropped against the commissioner! Big surprise!! http://azstarnet.com...2b1a5f436b.html Get real, G&F are royality, we are the peons. Mark
  9. I did a search, but I did not find this topic. Hard to believe that it hasn't been posted yet. Former Game & Fish Chairman Husted Accused of Sexual Harassment I especially like the part about the prairie dog case was eventually dismissed by prosecutors. Big Surprize!!! In May, 2010, Husted voted to suspend a hunter's license for 5 years for shooting a prairie dog out of season. Then in August, 2012 he shoots prairie dog out of season, and whines about being issued a citation. Now, he can't keep himself from touching the female G&F employees. (At least it wasn't the male G&F employees.) What a Loser, just like the rest of the commission. http://azstarnet.com/news/state-and-regional/former-game-fish-chairman-accused-of-sexual-harassment/article_740f2c48-dfa5-5384-a586-2f2b1a5f436b.html April 19, 2013 12:00 am • Associated Press PHOENIX - Jack Husted, who recently resigned as chairman of the Arizona Game and Fish Commission, was the subject of multiple allegations of sexual harassment by state employees. The Arizona Republic reported that records indicate that Game and Fish Department workers told a human-resources supervisor that Husted gave them surprise hugs and made inappropriate suggestions. Husted unexpectedly resigned as commission chairman last week, saying in his April 11 resignation letter to Gov. Jan Brewer that he had decided to "embark on a new chapter" in his life. Husted didn't return a call Thursday from The Associated Press. However, the Republic reported Husted said in a statement that he apologized for any misunderstanding resulting from what he called his "personal style of communication." "I am just a man from rural Arizona where a handshake and a hug and the trading of a joke are part of normal human contact," Husted said in the statement. Husted's resignation letter didn't mention the allegations, but department officials said he was told of them days before and was cautioned at that point by agency Director Larry Voyles against untoward conduct with female employees. Gary Hovatter, special assistant to Voyles, said no formal harassment complaints were lodged against Husted. The human-resources supervisors looked into the matter because rumors were circulating, but Hovatter said no further investigation is planned because Husted is no longer a commissioner. The five-member Game and Fish Commission establishes policies for guiding the management and preservation of wildlife. That includes the state's hunting and fishing rules and regulations for watercraft and off-highway vehicles. Brewer spokesman Matthew Benson said the governor did not ask Husted to leave but accepted his resignation and is comfortable with the inquiry and outcome. "This was handled with great speed and handled appropriately by Game and Fish," Benson said. Brewer appointed Husted in April 2009 to a term that was to expire in January 2014. Husted gained notoriety last year after he took a friend's 13-year-old son out shooting in Springerville and let him kill a prairie dog. He self-reported the out-of-season kill but pleaded not guilty and complained about getting a misdemeanor citation. The case was eventually dismissed by prosecutors. A biography recently removed from the Game and Fish website said Husted is married and serves as a deacon of his church in Springerville. It also described him as a former Eager Town Council member and as a former Pima County sheriff's deputy. Here are a couple of threads about his prairie dog poaching. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/34635-commissioner-husted-suspends-hunters-license-for/?hl=husted http://www.coueswhitetail.com/forums/topic/34529-commissioner-pleads-not-guilty/?hl=husted

    What's next G&F??

What ever it is, stock up on vasaline, because there will be not any public input for the issue.
  13. Yeah, kind of funny. Just like rats jumping from a sinking ship. I won't "out" anyone, but I know of at least a few who hunted over the evil bait, and now deny it. It's not even illegal yet, and people are denying bait like Peter denied Christ. Sickening.
  14. I sat there all morning and half the afternoon and it was a complete waste of time. On other issues, the commissioners demanded current data from within AZ. They let the public speak as long as anyone wanted. They were polite and thanked the public for their input. As soon as it got to our issue, the attitude completely changed. They slouched back in their chairs and told us that they would time us to three minutes. Now they did not care about any real data. Commissioner Freeman actually said to us, "don't bother repeating an issue that someone before you has already brought up". They didn't even try to demonstrate any fake respect to us. While I was speaking, two commissioners were chatting, and one was texting. The other two had bored looks on their faces. To any fish cop spies reading this, I plan to observe the law, I am an ethical hunter. I'll also be sure to show you the same respect in the field that the commission showed me and other Arizona hunters today. G&F can kiss my A$$. You know, if they had ANY data to support their actions, I could tolerate their arrogance. If the commissioners keep making decisions based on nothing, our AZ wildlife is screwed.

Hoghntr could use 6A cow help

I received a text from Hoghntr who has been cow elk hunting for a week now. He is having a rough hunt and asked me to post this for him: "I'm in Antelope Park and the elk are usually here but not this week that I can find. My physical condition is not so good. I do have a crossbow permit, but I am limited to sitting tanks in the evening or bait/salt if ya got it. Thanks for any help and I will keep any secret shared. Just want to fill the freezer. GOD BLESS!" In case you don't know Hoghntr, (Mike), he is a great pig hunter that has helped and shared his knowledge and secret spots with may people on this site. Mike is also a disabled veteran who was in the Gulf war. If you can help mike out in some way, please call him directly at 602-499-4136. Thanks! Mark

    Another first archery goat

Finally, with 15 bonus points, I drew the archery goat tag. bowhunter4life and I drew tags together and spent almost every weekend scouting 19a. Mike scored the first day, the closest I got was about 200 yards. But what a view I had. For several hours, I watched a heard of about 50 does and 10 smaller bucks party. A buck would chase a doe for a few minutes full speed, kicking up dust and grass. When that buck got tired, another buck would pick her up for a chase. Finally, the doe would drop, and they would start in on a new doe. The second day I hunted the same area, but the party was over and most of the lopes had moved on. I was sitting a small water hole and passed 4 or 5 smaller bucks. Late in the day, I saw this buck running into the water hole. I barley had time to close the blind windows and pick up my bow when he stopped at 30 yards. I said a prayer for a clean shot, and the Lord guided my arrow straight. He piled up in 75 yards. I can't wait for my next tag!!! Thanks for reading, Mark
  19. This weekend at the commisioner meeting, AZGF will propose to ban the use of salt and other comsumables when taking game. Here is the agenda item: 5.0 Rulemaking Recommendations for Article 3 Taking and Handling of Wildlife. Presenter: Dana McGehee, FOR6 Wildlife Manager. The Department will present rulemaking recommendations for Article 3 rules, regarding the taking and handling of wildlife. This presentation is for information only and no action will be taken by the Commission. link: http://www.azgfd.gov/inside_azgfd/documents/2012.08.3-4%20AgendaRev1.pdf This came up a few years ago, and many members of CWT.com helped in making the issue go away. The main arguement we used was the rule was too vague, as it could apply to salt, water, ranchers, etc. This time, G&F are much smarter and cleaned up the new rule, making special provisions for ranchers to be able to use salt and "food supplements". That's all I know until the proposal comes out publicly this weekend. Even if you don't use salt or "food supplements" in your hunting, or think "that's not hunting", this could eventually effect you. Game cameras, high powered optics, large calibers, laser range finders, etc. I'm sure that most hunters use something that other hunters consider "that's not hunting!" Hunters need to stick together, "united we stand, divided we fall".

Cousins receive 48 hours jail for starting Wallow fire

Don't get me wrong, those two should get hammered. But............... What about jail time for the forest service? They decided to let it burn because the fire was in the Bear Wallow Wilderness, that contained "no marketable timber". The forest service told the Alpine Fire Department "not to bother". Are you kidding me? Is no one accountable at the forest "service"? Mark

    6b help!!

If you can find a water hole that they are using, set up a blind at least 20 yards away. At least in 19a, after a few hours they seemd to get used to it. Make sure all the side and back windows are closed so you don't get back lit. As far as aiming low for string jump, don't do it unless the goat is nervous. If he is not nervous, you should not have to worry about string jump. Also, if you can find a fence crossing that seems to have good traffic, set up a camera and maybe a blind. Good luck! Mark
