Not sure what part of the country you are hunting in. I like the creosote flats and palo verde hills. The big boys will feed in the palo verde then head out and bed in the flats and water is usually within 3 miles.

Pretty humbling to be outsmarted by a bird with a brain the size of a pea isn't it. There is no "best" call, just the one you can work best. Diaphrams are great because your hands are free, box and slate calls are easier to learn to use, all take practice. Shock calls like owl hoots and coyote howls are supposed to make the toms gobble back so you know where they are. The rest is up to you.

I'm Going t0 Java Goatelina Burger for Dinner
azslim replied to bear402's topic in Cooking Wild Foods
I make up bacon burger too, 1lb of bacon with 3 lbs game. Makes good hamburgers, cheeseburger macaroni, meat loaf and the like. Been known to buy the steaks at the store that are ready to expire so the go real cheap, take them home and grind with bacon for burgers. May have to try the salt trick, I cool the meat if it starts getting sticky. I have an old refrigerator on my back porch that is my meat locker - pull the racks and stack qtrs in it to age until I feel like butchering or slide in SS bowls with grind to cool down. -
Pee Wee McDougal was the Sheriff before Tim, knew him well - he chewed my butt a couple times when I was drunk in HS and he took the beer and made us go home. Went to school with the Brody boys - Pee Wee yelled as us a couple times and took our beer, and knew the others and their kids. I left that country in 1980, joined USMC, get back every now and then. Lander ain't what it used to be. The conservationists have taken over due to NOLS. When Paul Petzol first started the school it was city kids that wanted to learn how to camp, now they seem to be the anti-hunting, anti-oil, save the bunny crowd. A lot of the old ranches have been bought up by Nature Conservancy crowd, places where I fixed fence and cleaned ditches for FFA don't allow anyone on them now, except for the NC crowd.

I made a single-shot 50 cal pistol in HS from a CVA kit, it was okay. Have shot revolvers at paper a few times, thing is to work up an accurate load - like any firearm. Since the hunt isn't too far away you better start practicing now.

And for pepper spray, pic up a can of Bear spray - goes farther and is meaner than most civilian sprays.

My Uncle was the Sheriff for many years, Tim McKinney, has a ranch SE of Lander on the way to Muddy Gap. Both side of my family are from that area, 5th generation ranchers on Mom's side and Shoshone on my Dad's, was related to half the county it seemed, had to get a wife from California so my kids weren't imbred's.....

I know several ladies that hunted into their 7th month.....depends on the lady.

By my figuring this should be the weekend after the Super Bowl.......may have a couple more "guides" show up if they know this.
-
Hey Bill, you were in my old stomping grounds at the One Shot - my Uncle guided for it for many years, stopped for a while then started guiding again a couple years ago. He also finally got to be a hunter, out shot the Governor either last year or the year before. He has quite a few stories to share about the first-time hunters he has taken out over the years.

you have to be originally from back east, always hang their animals upsidedown.......

This says it all about getting older & the whole aging thing...... An elderly couple are attending church services. About halfway through, she writes a note and hands it to her husband. It says, " I just let out a silent fart, what do you think I should do?" He scribbles back, "Put a new battery in your hearing aid."

find water, check for tracks, get high and glass

Depends on how soon it gets put into the system.

fun times chasing pigs, glad you made meat. I have a javelina skull I take into my Hunter Ed classes when we cover shot placement, it has a 3 blade mechanical stuck in the snout, based on the calcification the pig lived with it a long time, they are tough little animals.

azslim replied to talltines's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
Thing with the Signature line is lifetime warranty. Haven't used bino's but have a couple Fullfield scopes and a Signature spotter, good glass. -
Hogue stock, Burris spotting scope Accumatch barrel
azslim replied to rugermack's topic in Classified Ads
May want to say whether the spotting scope is a Landmark or Signature, be a heckuva deal if it is a Signature. -
Somebody had a late great Christmas present, just hope it is an honest somebody and they hear about how they came to be lost.

You need to learn to take them apart in the field, they are a lot easier to carry.......great buck by the way.
-
good call on the face to face class versus online, depending on the instructors you will learn a whole bunch more in the face to face.
-
I knew they were hard on fawns and wounded animals, didn't think they could take a healthy one - unless the buck had issues already and that's why the coyotes got after him. I like the snake too, I've run across a couple of small Rosy Boa's here in Az, nothing that size tho.

Arizona’s Gun laws Among The Most Permissive In The U.S.
azslim replied to MangeyJoe's topic in Political Discussions related to hunting
but the strict gun control laws obviously work, just look at the shooting statistics of NY, Chicago, DC where they have strict laws - hardly anyone ever gets shot there.........yea, right..... -
Amanda, I spoke with Travis Scott and he may come along also - same thing tho, we will know for sure when the date gets closer.

Vortex Skyline 20-60x80 Spotting Scope Sale - Only $299.99
azslim replied to gr8fuldoug's topic in Optics and tripods
If you don't have a spotting scope or want one with higher power this will be the best $300 you can spend. And if you don't like it you should have no problem selling it to get your money back.
