    Trophy Javelina

Super sweet blondie! Was that a boar or sow?

    2014 Elk regs

Why would they pull that hunt after 15+ years? Are the antelope not faring well down there, or are they becoming monster trophies? What is your theory?

    calling in the rut

When I grunted, I blew out two short grunts, like the baaa of a sheep. The first buck --which was walking parallel to me-- stopped, turned my direction, and stood still , so I flung an arrow at him. The second buck was also moving parallel to me across a canyon at 150 yards. He reacted the same way, but continued to walk his course after about 10 seconds. I stopped him three times that way, until he took off. Never did either buck begin traveling towards me, the call just stopped them and caught their interest.

    Coues at 15yards

Nice little spot for bucks. Clean up your email files, your inbox is full.

    Double droptine buck!

Nice buck! Do the "locals" down there who you work with ever come across any jaguars during their operations? Do they ever tell you jaguar stories? Just curious if they come across the jags more commonly than we do in southern Arizona.

    Fish Netting in Urban?

About 25 years ago, a buddy and I pulled a 20 foot minnow seine in the Kiwana's Park Lake in Tempe. We caught tons of "minnows" and a few bluegill before the horse patrol galloped up and asked us to leave. That was before the stocking program was in effect.

    2014 pigs?

Unit 33. He bedded down 20 yards from the hit. I thought he may have slipped away, so I blew on my grunt call and he magically stood up and limped away another 30 yards and bedded down again. I waited two hours and went to check on him, but he had moved again. I tracked him about 200 yards on a ridgetop, where he had bedded down twice more, before he went over the ridge top and down the other side. I stopped where he crested and gave him four more hours before going over the edge and bumped him up 50 yards beneath me. He limped away into the brush before I could get a shot off and I never saw him again. All three of his bedding areas had about half the blood volume on the ground compared to his first bedding spot as shown in the picture. He had a decent blood trail all along the ridgetop as well. I went back today to search for his final bedding spot beneath the ridge to check his blood loss and found maybe a six-inch blood spot on the ground. Not a sign of blood after that final spot. Glassed around and pushed the thickets, but he was gone. I definitely learned how tough it is to arrow a coues and respect anyone who has accomplished that feat spot and stalk.

    calling in the rut

I tried this yesterday and today on two different 4-point coues. Every time I blew on the call, they stopped and turned and looked at me. They would have been tagged deer with a rifle at 50 and 120 yards.

    2014 pigs?

I am cursed right now. Shot my first ever deer, a nice coues yesterday, and lost him. Went out today to continue the search and arrowed a pig, which also eluded recovery (i have shot 20 plus archery javelina in my career, and this was my first loss) so i am double bummed. For the past two days, all i have been doing is tracking, beyond the blood trail, and it has stretched my skills. But still, no recovered game. I guess that is why it is called hunting. My archery January is now over.

    help track a lost buck

That was a great 80's tune by Whitesnake, but why bring it up here? Discussion of rock and roll songs belong in the Campfire section.
  15. +1 on the blue surgical gloves. I rip through about 3-4 pairs when butchering/field dressing a bear or an elk. They are also great when working on the Jeep or other car repairs under the hood!

    1st Coues - Not Bad......

Nice job! I would have shot that buck too! Now, dad gets to sit at home and wish he was still out in the field!

    Hunting partner for the day

Going out by Superior tomorrow, the 27th, to scout for javelin and chase any bucks with the bow. Looking to take someone with me. Will leave the east valley around 6 am and come back before dark. Just a day trip to check out a new area. PM me if you are interested and have the day off. Hope to not go solo into a new area. Thanks.

    Never enough Santas

Merry Christmas to all! My twins were ecstatic to see santa last night! It was much better than daddy santa. Next year we will host an official CWT get together for Christmas, as our twins will be old enough to handle the situation.

    One for the Deer Hunters

I would have let her walk right over to the taxidermist! But, I think you are looking for her much larger boyfriend! How long of a run she put up in the snow before treeing?

    Is it legal?

Don't think Game and Fish would bat an eyelash over a javelina skull, as they are a dime a dozen. Was involved with a lion-killed bighorn sheep that we reported nearly 20 years ago. Game and Fish came to our home and took the skull pending an investigation, and then "it" disappeared off their log-books and there was not even a record of us contacting them nor any account of their officer coming out to take possession of the skull. The entire account was like an episode of "Without a Trace" as our skull and all information associated with it simply vanished. I have since forgiven the Fish and Game and have had great experiences checking in bears with them, but have not forgotten the sheep-gate fiasco they put me through. Thus, I agree with Heat, that you are safe if the skull has no flesh or hide attached to it. However, I would not lose any sleep over picking up a javelina skull with a little hair attached to it.
  22. Wishful thinking, but not on a school teacher's salary. I play tetris in my attic and park zero cars in my garage.
  23. TJ's house looks fantastic! I'm happy that I'm not the only CWT member who is a Christmas nut! Perhaps in a year or two when my twins get a little older, I can take a turn to host an official CWT Christmas gathering at our home on the east side as well. Man, I love this time of year!
  24. Not at all. I was hoping someone would!
