That's a heck of a deal on a solid rifle...any idea of a round count and what load the older fella shot in that rig and what kind of groups he regularly obtained? Does it have an after-market trigger?

All pm's replied to as of 7:45PM, 10-21-10. AntlerObsession: I believe I have a SPF deal with a fellow CWT member, another in #2 position and will make you #3 in the event the deals fall through if that's ok with you... Regards, Jim

Fine buck for sure, congratulations!

Wonderful buck, congratulations to the happy hunter.

Very fine pronghorn, congrats!

If you are a resident applicant you can get lucky with few points and draw Unit 10. It may not be likely but it can be done. Good luck! Jim

You're off to a fine start in your hunting life with that nice buck. Keep your hunting fun and family oriented and you'll enjoy a lifetime of memorable experiences. Taking LOTS of photos is so important as they often become the real "trophies" of your hunt, especially on those adventures when you return with an unfilled tag. It's gals like yourself that are going to help preserve our hunting heritage IMO. Thanks for your participation and thank you to your dad for getting you started. I will look forward to seeing more photos in the future. Good Luck in the drawings for 2010 Jim

That is a terrific buck with real nice tine length! Do you have a photo of the mount?

The .300 Winchester Magnum is a fine cartridge and has accounted for vast numbers of Western big game animals. The .300 WSM certainly has a growing following, probably in part due to the shorter action providing for a more portable rifle. You wouldn't be wrong to go with either round. Find the rifle that fits you best and then go with whichever caliber is available at that time. Additional consideration should be directed towards the fine .300 Weatherby cartridge. Walmart is selling the tan synthetic stocked Vanguard models for $350.00. That's a bargain in any rifle rack. Good luck with whichever rig you choose. Jim

A .50 cal Knight rifle I have is capable of fine accuracy with pellets, Powerbelts & Barnes MZ bullets. Here are a couple 100 yard targets with the loads listed.

I've seen harvest photos of a successful sheep hunt from unit 9/10. The sheep was in a cave! Last year's hunter suffered from a bad case of vertigo and just could not navigate the canyon country. It isn't for the faint-of-heart that's for certain.

Like all the others who have posted, I offer a hearty "GOOD LUCK" to you on your adventure. Make no mistake, this hunt is no gimme and you're looking at long odds to kill a sheep, especially without the services of a guide/outfitter. You sound very enthusiastic so you're in the right frame of mind. Keep that enthusiasm and take as much of the long Unit 9/10 season off from your day job so you can be in the unit with a rifle in hand. Here are a few photos of where you're going to be hunting and finding your sheep...

The ram dubbed, "Headache", was taken in AZ GMU 15D.

Lots of folks describe any CRF (Controlled Round Feed) action Winchester Model 70 as a "pre-64" or "pre-64 style" firearm. Since this rig is in .300 Winchester Short Magnum caliber it is most likely a CRF M70 out of New Haven, manufactured prior to the switch to the South Carolina FN plant, and not a pre-1964 manufactured gun. A posted pic would likely help clear the matter up.

Did you read the PM???

FWIW, both of the gunsmiths I have used also have shops that I would politely describe as untidy and in various states of disarray. These men have a method to their madness and often march to the beat of drummers you and I cannot hear, so don't be too quick to discount the guy who has already helped you out with your rig just because his shop did not appear as you would have expected. The likely source of your problem is too long brass, unresized brass, &/or a bullet not seated deeply enough, all of which has been pointed out by others here. If your rifle were mine, I'd clean it, inspect the bore for any damage from the rods pounded down the barrel, buy a box of factory ammo and head for the range to shoot it. Make sure you segregate your brass by manufacturer, resize the lots, and then measure each piece for length and trim to the specs noted in any of several reloading manuals. Making sure you have a proper OAL with your bullet of choice is your final step. This should go a long ways towards preventing your handloading mishap from happening again. .300 magnums are fine rigs and the ones I've loaded for and handled have been nicely accurate. Good luck with your rifle and handloads and have a fun and safe hunting season. Jim
