AZ Game and Fish fall draw

I contacted the draw division this morning straight up @ 8:00 AM. The helpful gal said it should be resolved and to "try again, if it doesn't work, call me back". I logged back in and completed the final two applications for bonus points only for a couple members of our family group. Those actually applying for 2015 hunts had completed their apps some time ago, I was waiting on two young adults in their 20's to figure out if they had hunt opportunities this fall that would work within their schedules for the units they would prefer to hunt if drawn. There weren't so they Bonus Pointed. No foot dragger here, I get it, apply early and avoid problems. That said, in my opinion, it is unacceptable that after as many years as the online draw system has been in place in Arizona that there are still issues with apps submitted in the last couple days. It isn't a mystery that lots of applicants are going to apply near the deadline, the system should be built and proofed to handle the worst case application scenarios, not the best case of daily consistent applying with no radical spikes of activity throughout the application process. I would imagine thousands of folks everyday are using the servicearizona website to register autos, motorcycles, license and tag info every day, all of which require credit card info input and the printing and emailing of confirmation receipts and that website has worked flawlessly every time I have used it for years. I do not believe the AZGFD wants these issues to keep coming up but the fact they happen applicants every year indicates there is still work to be done to perfect the application process through the servers handling the info now.

AZ Game and Fish fall draw

Yep, me too. Just tried and got the following: "An unexpected error occured after checkout. Please contact customer service." looks like there will be a line of us on hold tomorrow burning up the AZGFD phone line. Bummer, this system should be flawless by now.

2015 bonus point report now online

My son has 20 points and has been holding out for a tag in unit 10, some day he'll draw the tag and have a grand hunt. There are terrific pronghorn killed in Unit 10 every year but it does take more searching than it did in years gone by IMO. My family has been fortunate in drawing antelope tags in AZ over the years, not so lucky with deer tags though, go figure.

    Elk in Blythe, CA??

Here is a photo of the bull. I was told he is the only bull in a group of 15 elk and they are in the Blythe, CA area along the Colorado River. There is also reports of a lone cow elk near the CA/NV border on the west side of the River south of Laughlin, NV.
  10. The Volunteer Hunter Education Team in Region III will hold an Online Field Day for youth hunters without a Hunter Education Grad Card currently holding a big game permit for a 2014 Fall big game hunt. According to AZGFD records, there are a significant number of youth hunters under age 14 with drawn hunting permits that DO NOT have a Hunter Education Graduate Card. The Online Field Day for YOUTHS WITH A DRAWN PERMIT will be held on September 27, 2014 at the Tri-State Shooting Park on Boundary Cone Road in Fort Mohave, AZ beginning at 6:30 AM. Participants must register with Lori West or Pam Ostwinkle of the Hunter Education Branch Office in Phoenix @(623)236-7235. The youth must have completed their Online Hunter Education Course and provide the Certificate of Completion to the Chief Instructor at the Online Field Day Event. The youth must also have a SSN or a Department issued Sportsman's ID # to obtain their Hunter Education Graduation Card. The Online Field Day Fee is $8.00 in cash or a USPS Money Order as we cannot take checks or credit/debit cards. Participants should wear outdoor shoes, long pants, a hat, bring sunscreen and a binocular if you have one. We will provide cold water, eye and hearing protection, rim fire rifles and ammunition. A Final Written Exam will be conducted at the conclusion of the Online Field Day and a passing score of 80% or better is required. Class size is limited, if you need in to use your tag you need to contact Lori or Pam ASAP. 11. My dad's female black Labrador Retriever ran off from his camp in a heavy monsoon storm near Williams, AZ on July 6th of the Independence Day holiday weekend. He was camped off a forest service road just west and north of McDougal Flat in GMU 8, accessed off the western most Garland prairie Road from I-40. He has searched for her for 13 days straight with no luck. He has posted signs throughout Williams and has contacted all the city and county shelters and governmental agencies. He finally had to come home to Bullhead City today due to a medical issue. He's in his 70's and is super bummed over his lost dog. He traveled to Phoenix to view a dog that resembled his lost dog but it was not her. We have a notice posted on Craigslist and on a few other "lost pet" related sites. I realize it's a big forest, and any of a number of calamities could have befallen her. That said, there were also lots of folks camping throughout the area and it is hard to imagine no one saw a thing. The dog had a quality collar attached with a solid buckle and all appropriate BHC licenses & tags as well as a name plate with my dad's contact info. If you know of anyone popping up with a classic looking, old-school style, close-coupled female black Lab that didn't have one prior to July 6th, he would really appreciate a head's up. The dog is very friendly, like most Labs, and would not be startled or unapproachable by a stranger. Thanks, Jim & Bob Rich BHC, AZ 928-758-5204 928-444-3397 drannette@citlink.net

Lost Black Lab in Williams area

Thanks for keeping an eye out. As noted, the dog is a black female. She is right about 3 years old. We are hoping she might wander into a hunter camp if she is still alive and in the area. Lots of folks hunt GMU 8, as we do, & will be scouting for the upcoming archery elk and muzzleloader pronghorn hunt, and the archery deer hunt that gets going in August. If she fell prey to an accident or a predator, maybe a hunter comes across the scene and her collar with tags is found? Maybe someone found her and decided to keep her, I don't get that but it is a possibility. If someone pops up with a retrieve-crazy adult female black Lab they didn't have prior to July 6th, well that would be intetesting.

    Leftover Luck

It sucks trying to mail in for leftover permits when living in the northwest part of AZ as all of our mail "must" go to LAS VEGAS, NV first, then sorted and rerouted back to AZ. The Vegas loop can be a bermuda triangle for mail. We mail on Thursday and keep fingers crossed. If you go Express Mail it might he two days, might be one, might be noted in their box signature required even if that service wasn't requested. Total FUBAR when it comes to high demand leftover permits. Good luck to those who drew.

What rifle are your kids shooting???

Started both son and daughter with the same Remington Model 7 in .308 Winchester. I handloaded reduced "plinker loads" for the bulk of their shooting practice. My daughter has moved on to use two other rifles, a Remington 700 SPS in .243 Winchester and a Ruger M77 in 7X57 Mauser. My son now hunts with a custom Savage M110L in .30-06.
  18. Requiring the purchase of a fishing license raises the number of overall fishing licenses sold in the state and provides for additional federal dollars to flow into our game and fish department's hands. It's a good deal and provides benefit for all.
  19. Yes, the real deal. Check out the duck's reflection on the smooth face of the bulging swell.
  20. Whattya think, a standard bull sprig or a new specie of "Hang-Ten Pintail" ? Jim Rich MV, AZ

Who's the oldest hunter you know?

I enjoy threads like this one about the "Oldest hunter we know". Here is an update on my "oldest hunter I know", my Dad. He's still getting around as he closes in on his 73rd Birthday. He's picky on game he is willing to try and take and waits for a literally "perfect" shot angle before he'll squeeze the trigger on his .270 Winchester or his .50 caliber Knight Muzzleloading Rifle as he doesn't want to have a game recovery issue if he were to place a bullet poorly. He has a bit of a tremble in his aim and recognizes his limitations and hunts accordingly. For him, and for me, it's become more about the time spent outdoors together that matters most, game on the meat-pole or not. Here's to hoping he has many more years left on the calendar. Best wishes to all your special older hunters too! Jim Rich MV, AZ
