    PRDATR,

    Thank you for those links, I had already found and read those. What I am specifically looking for is published wording on the AZGFD website in the where / how to hunt section that states this specific wording from Couesdeer’s post: “Once elk are spotted, a stalk can be made. Be aware that it is not legal to locate animals, and then use a vehicle to make a pursuit; this is considered hunting from a motor vehicle.” 
    Was that copied and pasted into that post or was the wording created by Couesdeer?

    We are holding a Field Day for students who have completed the AZ Online Hunter Education Course in Fort Mohave, AZ @ The Tri State Shooting Park, beginning at 7:00 AM. There are currently 15 open seats for the event. Registration for the event is on the azgfd.gov website under the Education- Hunter Education section of the site.

    If your kid, or you, need to complete your AZ Hunter Education Course and want that Bonus Point prior to the June Deer/Sheep drawings, here’s an opportunity!

    We have been doing some version of a Field Day every month at the TriState Shooting Park in Fort Mohave, AZ (South of Bullhead City). Our next one is on April 16th, seats available. We just did a Bonus Point Field Test for adults wanting a bonus point, only 6 seats of 30 available were taken. The majority of our students are kids and adults from the Phoenix and outlying areas. Long drive for sure but there is a reliable class available. 

    The deferment is ongoing to July 1, after that, kids will need the field day completed to participate in their hunts for big game.

    If you can locate a Ruger M77 Ultralight in .270 Winchester, that rifle would match your desire for a similarly styled bolt gun with a classic wood stock and be lighter in weight overall. It hasn’t been manufactured in a number of years and isn’t in Ruger’s current catalog, maybe a gunbroker search could turn one up. I have found laminate stocks to be close in weight to standard wood stocks given similar shape, if not a smidge heavier.

    Have you thought of going with a lighter replacement stock and keeping your ‘46 era Win M70? That, along with lightweight Talley mounts and rings and a lightweight carry strap would shave some weight from your proven, older-gal and keep her in the woods and your family. These heirloom rifles just do not have the appeal to the younger, modern-minded hunters as they did to our generation who thought the world of the pre-war and pre-64 M70 Winchesters. They were, after all, known as The Rifleman’s Rifle.

    You may find it easier to sell the rifle outright here to a member and then use the cash to purchase your next rifle. Good luck in your search!

    This is a heckuva Educator/Instructor Team. If I had a youngster within driving distance of their event we’d be registering for a seat in their class! Keep up the excellent work all as I am sure you will fill up as the Holiday fog is shaken off. With the increased speed of results getting updated in the system, the students will likely earn their Permanent Hunter Education Bonus Point in time for the elk/antelope draw in February.

    I understand you said "anything but .30 caliber"...that said, there was a scoped,  Savage 110 LH in .30-06 listed here in the classifieds for $400. This rifle can be handloaded with 125 gr bullets in a reduced load that would be very manageable. Doing a bit of work to the stock for fit would make an accurate, capable rifle for your new hunter. 

    I went that route with the same model rifle for my son ( along with a Rem Model 7 in .308 Winchester, used the same 125 gr Sierra ProHunter bullets with reduced loads) and it worked out well.

    It makes things easier when the WM rolls up if you have written permission with the land or homeowner(s)’ name(s), address(es) and phone number(s) on the note. Also, you need that same permission from every owner within the 1/4 mile of your hunt location if there is more than one home or structure. The WMs that work our area during dove and quail season also include farm structures as there could be folks working on equipment in or around them.

    We are doing two field days almost monthly at the Tri-State Shooting Park in Fort Mohave, AZ, near Bullhead City, AZ / Laughlin, NV / Needles, CA. 24 online graduates capacity per DATE. We have May & June posted on the AZGFD website for registrations. We get lots of students from Phoenix area, SoCal, & So Nevada. Lots of rooms in Laughlin, NV & in Kingman, AZ, it's a drive but you can get in a class and get the kids' their Hunter Ed and their Bonus Point. Adults can get their Hunter Ed and Bonus Point without paying $150 or $300. If you carpool and split the gas it beats not finding a class seat in Phoenix.

    All of the calibers mentioned will work for the intended purposes.

    One thing the .308 Winchester has going for it is the availability of ammunition in a retail environment. Most of the retailers I have visited in my area have seen some stock of .308 Winchester arrive for their shelves. Mostly the Winchester "Deer Season" loading and blue box Federal.

    While no one plans to forget their ammo for a hunt, or run short on a hunt, if it happens, .308 Win ammo is a cartridge likely to be found at a retailer. Now, the same can be said for the .270 Win and the .30-06 Gov't, but those rifies tend to be a bit heavier and longer than alot of kids can handle, one of the reasons the short action cartridges are preferred by many for starting off new hunters. 

    I started my kids with a Remington Model 7 in .308 Winchester. Loaded up 125 gr bullets for practice and reasonable range deer hunting. Loaded or bought 165 grain premium bullet loadings for elk hunting. It worked out well for both of them. 

    Well done to you for providing a rifle for a deserving youngster.

    Congrats on drawing a tag. Keep track of road closures as the Bill Williams Watershed can close, (fire concerns) cutting off access to a significant chunk of the unit. 

    My son hunted the unit last season and was into bulls the last 5 days, just wasn't able to put it all together for a kill.
