I sleep in my merino wool base layer and find it takes much longer to get stinky than other materials.

I'd try H1000 with the 140s. Should get good speed w/o the temp issues of RL22. -

Please elaborate on your annealing process if you don't mind. Do you use a machine or just a torch? I've been spinning necks in a propane flame with the case sitting a deep well socket in a drill... but always looking for a better way. Thanks, Mike -

Bergers FAILED me horribly
Mike S replied to joelpresmyk8's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I have only shot one animal with an all copper bullet... a good sized bull elk with a little 6.5 127gr LRX and it literally collapsed in its tracks with a quartering on chest shot. Only a sample of one, but I think the monometals do have merit on larger animals when your shots can be from near to far. That same bullet shoots tiny groups in my 6.5-06, so what's not to like. Don't find a hunting bullet cost to be that big a concern in the overall picture. Killed a lot of game with Hornadys as well... wore out the .270 tube on my now 6.5-06 with them. -

As others have said, no oils needed on a firing pin and spring assembly for cold weather. I put a little graphite powder on the spring, but a dry lube might work even better. I do always keep the bolt lug faces lightly greased though.

I was really impressed with the way a Barnes 6.5 127LRX hammered this bull. I'd expect the bigger calibers would work just as well within the appropriate impact velocity range....

Redding Type S Bushing Full length sizing die
Mike S replied to mpriest's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
If you are just trying to increase neck tension for magazine feeding in a semi auto, and don't want to pay extra for a bushing die, you can chuck the expander button in a drill and reduce it's diameter a little at a time with a fine grit sandpaper to increase tension. The shoulder bump comment is a good one. For bolts I'd go .0015-.002in for hunting, AR's .002-.003 and maybe .003 -.004 for M1's and M1a's with the slamfire concerns. -
Redding Type S Bushing Full length sizing die
Mike S replied to mpriest's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Please describe what you are meaning by pushback... and what you want the bushing die to accomplish. I don't think the Redding dies come with bushings. My Forster set came with 3 bushings. I have only used bushing dies with neck turned brass. If unturned brass was very uniform in neck thickness it should work OK, but the intent would be to reduce loaded cartridge runout and reduce the working of the brass in the neck over repeated loadings. -
Congrats, looks like her's is bigger, well played...

I suspect you are not setting the shoulders back enough with your current die setting. If you don't have the tools to measure it, you can try chambering an empty rezised case and turn the die down a little at a time until they chamber freely. This is easier to feel if you remove the firing pin assembly first, super easy on a Model 70, a little harder on a 700. Once you find the proper depth for the die, tighten the locking ring and you are set, for that rifle. If you do have the tools to measure this, I use 0.001- 0.002 for my hunting rifles.

I'm pretty much at 208muleys's numbers posted above. It mostly depends on how much water I'm carrying. I use a Mystery Ranch Nice Frame with either a longbow or 6500 bag which is on the heavy side compared to many, but tough as nails.

Any tube rifle builds for hunting? (lightweight)
Mike S replied to Chris's topic in Long Range Shooting
I have friends with both Eliseos and Tubbs, but never thought of building a hunting rifle on one. Way too ungainly in my opinion. -
As others have mentioned the 6.5-06 dies are cheaper and more available, including competition seaters, bushing dies etc. if you want them. You also have lots of brass on hand. I was in the same situation when I decided on the un-ackleyed version. I was using a controlled round feed action and did not want to deal with feed issues or feed rail work on my model 70. I think you'd be happy with the standard 6.5-06, but to each their own.
