    Killing small bucks

I've tagged far more mature bucks than little ones, but the little ones do taste better. To each their own. . . My personal opinion is that reducing the number of December tags would have a bigger impact on a units trophy potential than point restrictions.

    270 win

I use H4350 in my .270 when loading 130 gr triple shocks and they shoot great, not the bullet or powder I use for Coues though. I use Hodgdon instead IMR as it is less sensitive to temp variations (loss of velocity in very cold weather). Other than that I would assume you have a good combo there.

Bill's matches are great practice for that upcoming hunt! Hope to see some of you there. . . Mike

    .270 factory ammo

Hornady ammo has always worked well for me and is usually what I use to test a new purchase if I don't have reloading dies yet. My .300 win mag would shoot .5 MOA with their 180 Grain heavy mag load. Seems like Hornady 130's shot about 1 MOA for 5 shots in my .270 when I first got it, which is pretty good for that rifle. I'd certainly give Hornady a try. I stick to 130s myself for Coues. I use 130 Hornadys over a max charge of RL22. I think the 110s will have greater wind drift at longer ranges, but I've never actually compared them...
  5. Unless I'm out of town hunting or camping I am mountain biking 20-30+ miles a week, mostly in the Phoenix Mountain Preserve near my house. Have to do early morning or night riding during the hot months, but it is easier for me to keep in shape than get in shape...

    300 um elk load?

A buddy of mine dumped a big bull in the early hunt with a head on shot at 15 or so yards with his 300 Ultra Mag and a 180 scirroco. He said the bullet made it to somewhere behind the diapragm, so you might consider that for a premium bullet that will hold together at close range. I expect it would also expand better at very long range than the TSX monometal types. Good luck with your hunt! Mike

    Which Range Finder?

I've been very satisfied with the Leica LRFs. Started with an LRF800 and am now using an LRF1200 scan model. Remember that the advertised yardage capability is for a reflective target. The usable range on an animal is often much less.

    Handgun Bullet Limit

I'd be careful what I wished for. You might end up with something silly like a 5 round limit and then be unable to find a legal magazine for your pistols... Mike

    First Javelina

Congrats, they are a lot of fun to hunt close up as you discovered. Lip smacking and soft grunts can help out if they get nervous...

    Great Youth Javelina Hunt

Bill, there's a guy in Tucson, I only know him as the "sausage guy" who does great work with javelina. A couple years back a buddy of mine took both of our javi's to him to make snack sticks. They were very good. Nothing better while out on a hunt than snacking on the fruits of a previous one. I can try to find out exactly who this processor was, if you want. The place in Tucson is the Sausage Shop on Prince Road. It is a deli and does the wild game work also. Not the cheapest or quickest , but worth it in my opinion. Took my javelina to him Friday. Mike

    Berger VLD vs Barnes TTSX

With those groups I wouldn't worry much about more speed. Do you know how far off the lands the bullets are seated? Thanks, Mike

    Blued stainless barrel?

Remington did this for sure and maybe Winchester. They used some sort of iron plating on the exterior surface that was then blued. Mike

    Muzzle brake

I'd recommend starting with a 1" decelerator pad and seeing if that was enough. Not a fan of muzzle brakes due to the noise and flying debris when shooting prone. I have a brake on my lightweight .300 win Mag, but once I added a decelerator pad I stopped using the brake. Mike
  21. Best of luck to any tag holders out there! Look forward to pictures.

    Savage 110

I have never owned a 110, and don't expect to, but from what I have seen they are real sleepers in the accuracy department. The barrel nut headspacing system also allows for do it yourself barrel swaps. I've never heard of a bolt handle falling off of one either. Mike

    Fixed Power Scope Recommendations

Both the 6x36 and 6x42 Leupolds are great scopes. One thing to keep in mind about the 6x42 is it has a short mounting tube length that could be a problem if you are putting it on a long action. I have the 6x36 on my custom Mauser .257 Roberts for that reason. Mike
