  1. Thanks for the info and the link, but since I have never been to Arizona, I am trying to get an idea of where to focus my efforts if I get drawn for the October hunt.

I have obtained all the topo maps for 36b and have been reading everything I can find about hunting in the unit. My concern is are there enough white tails on the western side of the unit for a viable hunt if I do my part. Not looking for a trophy animal, just a decent buck if possible.

I plan on being out there 3 to 4 days before the hunt starts, and plan on hunting the whole season if necessary. I am just curious as to what the odds are of all of 36b being closed, all of Coranodo NF being closed, or just the area involved in the fire and perhaps a buffer zone around it being closed, and if parts of the unit are still open for the hunt, which area would be better to concentrate own.

I know I won't kill anything if I don't get out there and hunt, just wanting to narrow down the places to be looking.

I wouldnt worry too much about it being completly closed. There is still plenty of area to get into for unit 36b (I put in for that hunt too). I think alot of the area that burned is scrub brush so there is not that much harm of falling debris. I can see the impact of flooding and erosion and a possible partial closure for the burn areas. Still I am optomistic about being able to hunt that unit.

  2. I wish I could find the family pics from our camping and fishing trips over the years. Some of the best fishing was on big lake for me, even with the rental row boats without motors! We loved driving just down the road by the vast stretches of grass lands and watching the herd of elk and antelope.

  3. Tucson John that is a beautiful place. I share your sentiments completely. Our cabin has been a very special place for many friends and family. It took over 5 years to build. We worked weekends and vacations. We had some great times during some of the construction parties, and so many good times since then. My dad and I know every board, wire, pipe, screw, and screw up in the place.

Here is a picture from the back showing the porch where we have had so many good times. Coffee and conversation in the early morning as the sun rises over Escadilla is one of the most relaxing activities in my life. One September night, my son Garrett, called in his first bull, right to the porch. We have also put away a lot of beer and bourbon from the porch.

Hopefully all these memories will be added to over the years.

Your place looks very familiar to me for some reason. Is your place off of forest service road 56 on the way to lake hulsey?

  4. Does your group want to travel very far? Pinal peak, or the pioneer pass camp area just outside of globe has been our father and sons camp area. It has thick pines, and nice weather. No water but hey, its az! You can also look at the mount lemmon camp areas, like pepper sauce camp ground, and that had a creek if I remember right.

  5. In my opinion, I would say hold off for a broadside shot as you only have one shot with a muzzie. 50. cal should have enough power to blow thru a shoulder, but I think the key here is the powder being used along with your bullet choice. You need to see what bullets work with different powders as each will react differently in your rifle vs someone elses. Conical bullets or sabot rounds will retain energy better and expand more than round at longer ranges, but round is great for shorter ranges.
