    6A North Cow hunt

    I think you're right on downthebarrel...~330.
  2. JVS

    what ya think

Those thirds are freakin unreal. I'd say in the 320's. He does lack some length it seems. If his top end matched his lower, he'd be a 360 bull.
  3. I thought for sure he'd chime in when I mentioned the 270 as being the best coues caliber, not to mention good for elephants, pheasants and any other critters that need to be shot.

    6A North Cow hunt

Just south of lower lake mary in the finger meadows. I have seen lots of elk killed in there. Lots of elk in there period. I haven't been in there for two years, but I beleive there have been quite a few logging roads cut in there in the past few years. This may or may not help you.

    Almost, but no cigar!

I don't know about you guys, but my computer screen tells me that deer has an unusually light coat. Am I just seeing things? Not only a nice buck, but nearly albino!

    The .223

    Now there's a real .270!!!

    The .223

not to go off on tangent but the 30-06 is the best all around caliber, from varmints to bison. UUUGH...Puhleaze. Back to the 223. If I were you and going to use it, I would be very hestitant to shoot over 300 yards. This topic also calls for shot placement. If you can put that bullet in the zone every time, I guess go for it. Now, back to the 30-06 quote. Just messing with you mulie hunter...270 and 30-06 ballistics aren't too far off from one another.

    The .223

No way man. As Lark would say... 270 all the way. Whether hunting coues in the Arizona desert, dahls in the rugged mountains, elephants in Africa or pheasants in the uplands...the Winchester 270 is the only way baby! As for the 223, keep it for cheap plinking, coyotes and oinkers.

    UNIT 28 help..

we have shot quite a few near Eden along the river and up into the foothills. There are a fair amount of oinkers near the san simon diversion, just SE of Sanchez (in past years). I haven't been in there this year.

    gates

ALWAYS leave gates the way you find them...Ranchers will open/close gates often at times depending on availability of water, etc. Trust me, you don't want to close a ranchers cattle out of a water hole. I saw it 3 or so years ago on a dove hunt. I'm sure the guy that closed it assumed a sloppy guy left it open, when in actuality the rancher left it open to allow cattle to water. Ranchers will leave it open to allow cattle to graze in other allotments as well, so...rule of thumb says leave it like you found it. Ranchers will usually open the gate a full 180 degrees from closed position to show it is definitley OPEN. If you have a concern, you can always call the rancher/ranch-hand and let them aware of the situation.

New to Area - Unit 30A Tips

I'm sure you know my dad...He was the land manager during that time period. If you want to hear some good Klump stories, my dad has more than one!!! My dad always said...they are great people if you meet them on the street, but put a BLM title behind your name and you are considered the devil himself in the klumps eyes. Those klumps probably took 10 years off my dads life with all their lies, lawsuits, liens (they actually put a lein on our house!), death threats, etc, etc. I think it is a crock that some ranchers can get away with public theivery, and even murder...because nobody questions what they do! My dad did, and got the short end. Anyway, it's an unfortunate situation that probably will not go away anytime soon.

Hey Bill, Did you cover the story ~15-20 years ago?

New to Area - Unit 30A Tips

Trust me when I say the Klumps are nice people for the most part, but watch it if you cross them in any way...you might end up like the Klump wife that disappeared...??? Anyone know the details of that one? I wouldn't try and pull a fast one on them. They have been known to break any and every rule in the book and justify their actions with the hard and fast rules of the wild west (which some of the Klumps still live in).

    Burn Areas

After a fire, most of the secondary successors are good browse for deer. The best of any is the aspen in a high pine fire area. The aspen sprout out first thing after a fire, which is a good browse for deer and elk.

I didn't think you'd have time this year.

    Pics from up coming video

That grass ought to be taller this year...that is if it didn't get washed away! I too think the final product will be real good. There are some good bucks on that video. I want to see two of those taken on video during the rifle hunt this fall...
  17. That's a burrowing owl. Not protected in AZ, but don't screw with them in NM. You'll find them quite a bit on the san pedro in the river bank, and anywhere they can find an abandoned cavern to nest. Neat find.
  18. try this link... http://raws.wrh.noaa.gov/roman/states/AZ_state_frame.html You can click on the individual stations and get 30-day data. I checked the local stations, and some had upwards of 12 inches in the past 30 days!

    Ocotillo bucks

A few places I hunt the deer do nothing but eat on barrel cactus fruit. If you have ocotillo and barrels in the same are, that's where I'd hunt.
  20. The deer rut later in the year here in AZ. The Coues will not rut until December, and on a warm year sometimes will not start until late dec early jan. Anyway, the rut isn't as helpful to a successful hunt as a good pair of optics and a bit of patience. Neither one come very cheap. Anyway, there are plenty of deer out there, you just need to know where to find them. I'd suggest anywhere above ~4,000 feet along the bases of the mountains. That is the short answer. Honestly, there are lots of deer just about anywhere up at that elevation. Try Stockton Pass.

    anyone near safford

I got hit on my AZSCU account for 78.00, two for 19.50 and a 12.50...Don't bother telling me how lucky we were. I'm going on an archery bull hunt, a coues hunt in 31 (not sure which one), and an oinker. My wife got drawn for the late coues! We pulled it off this year. When it rains it pours!

    anyone near safford

I live in Pima...Looks like I need to change my profile.
  23. My vote is with Lark... Too bad we can't do away with "appointments". Appointments are usually for people that can't get there on their own. Who wants that for a commissioner? We need good ole democracy. Let's VOTE!

    The Off Season

Didn't know that little creek held big smallies anymore. After the limits were lifted and everyone and their dog filled up an ice chest every weekend with beer for the trip in and fish for the trip out, I figured the good fishin' would only be referred to as the good 'ol days. Haven't been fishing there in a few years. Looks like you found a good one. Nice.

    27 Elk

I'm going on a rant...don't care if anyone has an opinion, but I'm tired of the tags in unit 1 and 27 decreasing every year. Look at the ridiculous number of antlerless tags. You've got to be kidding me. Is that a political move by the G&F to satisfy the USFWS? Are they really selling out our elk to the wolves...oh wait, I mean dogs? That is what it looks like to me. Now, as far the bulls and low success rates...I'd hate to blame that on the wolves, but that is the only explanation I have. Anything to blame the wolves. Hey .270. ya got my back here or are the little green aliens on the prowl again?
