I know this thread has moved beyond just the tusk issue but this weekend I finally got around to cutting the horns of my Sons mule deer he shot this year in 36A Jr hunt and we noticed it and one tusk. He will pull that tusk and keep it in his hunting “medicine bag” azyoung

Wow what a hunt! Very hot and very busy. Stanley and the ADA had a great camp set up and we met some really nice people. Our first morning as we worked up hill to glass we counted 17 trucks that rolled by our hill. Then at the top we glassed a hunter on every ridge. Having the general Coues and fall javelina the same time as the Jr. hunt is just a little crowded but some young hunters did shoot some real nice deer during that weekend. Then Monday morning the crowds left and the deer settled down. Monday night we glassed a real nice Coues probably around 80” at 500 yrds. We cut the distance to 340 and could not move any closer. So Riley settled down and took a shot. The buck ran a few yards and then walked over the ridge. Riley felt pretty disappointed but wanted to hunt the next morning in the same area. The next morning we right back in the same place before the sun was up. As the sun rose we started glassing deer in every direction. Mostly Coues just then a ATV with two hunters pulled up at our truck and walked right in the canyon we were glassing. We watched all the deer run out in front of them they only glassed one doe and never did see the other deer. So again we where pretty discouraged. That evening we glassed some smaller hills and some flat country with only a few Coues does. With only a few minutes of shoot able light left we decided to head back to the truck and head to camp. Riley had stopped to take a drink and looked across a wash ahead of us and saw a buck standing. We pulled down the bipod and he took a shot. A small dead mesquite behind the buck exploded with bark and dust. I told him he had missed so he took two running shots. He said he felt good about the shot so we ran to the place the buck went over the ridge and Riley let out a scream the buck was laying there with three hits. The first double lung, then he hit just back in the last rib and then he nicked the bucks back leg. Riley was so excited even with a 250 -300 yard drag back to the truck he did not stop talking. 5 full days at 80 degree heat paid off I am really proud of him He worked so hard. Thanks to Stanely and the ADA and the 36A game warden who worked really hard getting young hunters on deer.
