My dad built a 383 for a '72 Chevy I restored when I was a kid. That was a bada$$ motor. We could smoke the 33 x 12.5 bfg a/t's easily.
Getting back on track...With all of the electronics and other crap these trucks have now, I would do the crate motor. Probably save a lot of headaches.

Camp on the Young road and fish willow springs. Easier for the kids to fish than a creek. However there are several creeks around Canyon creek, Christopher creek ect. Make it fun for the kids, on a kids trip I don't usually plan on fishing as you are mostly untangling rods and trying to make it fun for them.

I have been putting in for archery elk in the state of AZ as a resident for 21 years and have drawn 2 tags.
I have drawn 3 archery bull tags as a non-resident in NM in 10 years. Quality of bulls being close to the same.
A friend of mine who lives in NM has archery hunted bulls 9 times in NM in the same time I drew 2 tags in AZ. Every bull except one was well over 300".
If this is your only criteria, I'd move to NM.

My son and niece drew rifle bull tags. My niece's sister and parents are super excited and are going with us. I'll have to weigh the gas & travel time of camping off the ranch and driving into it everyday vs the $650 fee to have everyone camp together on the ranch. UGH! Only thing worse is not having a tag...

Taylor drew a 7W early cow tag. 3rd elk tag in 3 years. When she turns 21, we are off to Vegas.

Where it's hot like AZ, Ut, Nm the temps play the largest factor from my experience. Where it's cold like Wy and Co I actually look forward to the full moon as I can pattern them better as they become more vocal at night. They will also move around more in their bedding areas midday during a full moon.

+2 for Victoria. I took Vowell up on his advice a year ago and she beat my local dealer by nearly $9k. Crazy price difference made the 5.5 hr drive worth it!
