    when you start reloading there is a number of the things you have to buy to start out with.you'll need a press,powder measure,scale,priming tool,powder funnel,dies,shellholder,powder trickler,neck reamer,powder,primers and bullets.the two things that change are the dies and shellholder for each caliber.the shellholder is interchangable between the 25-06,270,280 and 30.06.the dies are the only thing you'd have to change out besides your bullets and powders for these calibers mentioned.the best thing to do is find someone who already reloads and have them help you get started.once you get started you'll be surprised how better your groups get from reloading compared to factory ammo.hope this clears up some confusion for you.

    hey younghunter,

     

    I just got back from sighting in my 280 today.I replaced the leupold I had on it with a conquest 4.5x14 and it's great.I did what redrabbit said and went to sportsman's warehouse and put both the leupold and zeiss on a stock to see what they both felt like.that's the best way to figure out what you'd want.in my opinion the clarity and reticle in the zeiss scope was better than the leupold I matched it up against.bearbasin.com is a great place to order one from they'll beat the price of most anybody on the zeiss'.

    zeiss conquest!! better reticle,better clarity.go to sportsman's warehouse and check them both out together.that's the easiest way to find out what you'd like.the conquest is priced a little more than the leupold but I think it's worth it.good luck.

    actually, I was looking for an ultra lightweight in 25-06.but i saw this guy at the gun show carrying this one around and had to have it.its a 280 remington which is basically a 7mm-06.I figured for the price i got it for i would sacrifice caliber choice.it has a leupold vari-x III 2.5x8 power scope on it which I may swap for something a bit bigger later on.

    yeah, this was influenced by the antis. the story is all these changes are going on is because some anti-hunting group went to the game and fish and told them that if they don't change the laws on hunting lions that they were gonna put an initiative on the ballot to ban hunting lions with dogs and with all the bleeding hearts out there it would pass with ease.so the game and fish had to cave in otherwise they would lose lion hunting all together.it looks like the antis have the G and F by the cajones on this one.

    I'd go along with coosefan and say low 80's.he's definatly past his prime with those thick bases and thining antlers.I shot a buck like that a few years ago that was a 3x3. he had a 14 1/2 inch inside spread with thick bases but wasn't very tall or heavy antlered.his teeth were nearly gone but he weighed a ton.I looked like a drunken sailor carrying him back to the truck a mile away. :blink:

    you brought up your deer so I thought it was fair game to talk about.All I did was go back and read your story about your deer.I've lived in az for more than 25 years and have hunted for 28 years.My brother works for the forest service and helps ranchers on his days off so I'm slanted on this subject.The public lands are not just for us sportsman.there a multiuse reusable resource.we cut the trees they grow back,the cattle eat the grass it grows back.mining companies,mountain bikers,hikers,birders, everybody uses our public lands.for us to say that we should remove cattle from these lands would be like saying we shouldn't be able to hunt these lands because it offends somebody who doesn't like hunting.yes, there is overgrazing on some property but most of that is private land.I think our biggest worry shouldn't be what ranchers are doing to our lands.It should be about urban sprawl.I remember when I was a kid living in rio rico we had property on sonoita creek.that creek used to flow from patagonia lake for about 3 miles before it soaked into the wash.now it hardly goes a mile because there's been so many wells drilled and the ground water has fallen from all the people moving into the area.look at the vail area in Tucson.A big developer moves in and drills a thousand foot well to water a golf course and sub-division and the wells that people own at 1,2,and 300 feet dry up.I'm going off on a tangent so I'll stop now before I get too long.

    Also remember you shot and wounded 2 deer in the same spot you shot that buck bowsniper.you shot a spike the day before you got your big one without finding it and then your friend shoots a deer and you can't find it later in the january hunt.now thats a true environmentalist.by taking three deer instead of just one you've done more for herd management than any rancher could of. :)

    you seem to forget that without ranchers you'd have unbridled development of lands that are now protecting habitat and wildlife from urban sprawl.I know of at least 4 ranches that have sold there land to developers because dealing with environmentalists,government agencies and people like you have got them sick of it all. ranchers are stewards of the lands, keeping water in drinkers and tanks during the droughts so that wildlife and cattle both have water.they're not all rich either. I know of one rancher in southern AZ who had to sell out because his father died and the IRS told him he had to pay tax on the estate left to him which amounted to hundreds of thousands of dollars. the ranchers also have to go by guidelines that the forest service sets as to how much cattle can graze on an alotment so your anger should be sent to the forest service and not at ranchers.
