    fossil creek backpack trip?

The trailhead is about 4 miles from Strawberry, the road is usually in pretty rough shape but you can drive a passenger car to the trailhead but you want to take it easy. The hike to the springs from the Strawberry side is about 4.5 miles, all down hill on the old mail trail (think old jeep trail, with a few narrow points) the trail is an easy walk down but then it's almost all uphill on the way out. I'd recommend hiking up in the morning as the hike up is almost all western exposure and it can get toasty on the way up. I've hiked down in less than 45 minutes and hiked up in a little over an hour. If you're looking for a primitive experience I'd recommend going during the weekday. This area is hugely popular and can get a lot of weekend traffic (seem to recall a forest service report that Fossil Creek had 90000 visitors per year). Some people bring all their trash stuff (beer, wine, coolers, water bottles, sleeping bags, tents, trash) and leave it there because they don't want to carry it back up hill...so the camping areas near the springs can get kind of trashed. People will also hike up from the waterfall or along the old flume road from the 708 road. For more solitary experiences you could walk down the old flume road and then drop down towards the creek and find some nice benches with your own swimming hole. It's a beautiful area, I've had some negative experiences up there from other users but it is worth seeing. Personally, I think late summer early fall is the best time to go, the sycamore, ash, and sumac trees are changing color and there are less people. If you go bring a mask and snorkel and remember that even though there are a bunch of fish it isn't open to fishing. Also, the gnats can be horrible during this time of the year and during August so be ready for that. It's a great spot and it's cool to see all that water come streaming out of the ground. PM me for more information.

    I saw a first today

Was it a whole egg or perhaps part of a shell? Seems random and a pretty cool sight..that's for sure. I seem to recall that in book about the guy that raised the flock of Osceola turkeys he said that the turkeys ate eggs, frogs, and smaller turkey feathers that they found while going about their daily routine. They'd be pretty curious about any item they'd find. If you've ever watched a chicken, you get the idea of their fixation with shiny objects and such. I could be wrong but it's what I seem to recall.. Thanks for sharing

    SOLD

Seriously good price. These are great packable insulation pants that are nice for keeping in your pack for those Dec, Jan (even Sept-Nov rim country) hunts where you're getting warm on the hike in and settling down for long glassing periods on cold mornings. Also seen guys take these pants on sheep and goat hunts in Canada and Alaska. Tried and true at a smoking deal. If these were a Med I'd be the new owner. Bump..

    Backpacking sleeping bags!

I had a long response for you but lost it... First things first: Buy a good compression bag, waterproof like eVent or silnylon, the right size to fit your bag. With your price point and temp ranges you have way more options than you listed. A couple things to think about. Have you used a liner before? They arent for everyone and can make sleep harder for some people. Are you a warm or cold sleeper? Warm sleeper (on average) can get away with less bag than cold sleepers. Have you considered a UL quilt? Same temp rating but closer to 1lb with similar price point. Best advice I can think of is to actually get into a bag with the liner youre gonna use and the sleeping pad and any extra clothing and see how it fits. The next is the warranty and company name. Rei and some local stores (Az hiking shack) carry different brands that will meet your needs. The two you listed (Sierra Designs and BA) are good bags. Havent seen Kuius in person. Check out the Marmot Hydrogen, (personally I dont like the 3/4 zipper) Mtn Hardware Lamina Z Brooks Range Drift Montbell down hugger #3 Rei Radiant Good luck! Buying a new bag is a personal thing...and youll be surprised that you didnt cut that 2 extra pounds earlier.

The woman who harvested a giraffe

Rebecca is an accomplished hunter, and a successful big game guide with some challenging hunts and kills under her belt. She'll weather this just like Melissa Bachman and Kendall Jones did. No big deal... Edit: Glad you can rant safely within the CWT community. As someone who rarely watches the news and ignores social media I might not have seen this 'trending'.

Back to the top for this one. Can't believe people don't want to buy a $200 shotgun, it would be a good home or camp defense gun.

    montana wall tent & stove

Wow... Seems crazy that this is for sale still. Someone could buy the DIY frame components from Montana Canvas for less than $300 and the conduit from HD or Lowes and have a great tent for a bargain price. Someone has to buy this tent...

    AZGFD DOES IT AGAIN

Not trying to nit pick, but Game and Fish doesn't pass laws, Az legislature does. Sounds like something was lost in translation. Some additional information in the form of house bills or senate bills might be helpful. I am hopeful that such 'laws' wouldn't be passed but we can always be surprised. I certainly hope you can provide additional info.

    Monday Check in

Depends how bad you want it.Losing 50lbs is huge, awesome job! The discipline will be the toughest. Look into buying a couple different excercise bands, one a medium to heavy depending on how tight it is and one medium to light. You will be limited on all the excercises you can do, but arms, chest, legs and back are all possible in your hotel room with the bands. You can also do alot of excercises with your own body weight. Cardio will be the hard part but even walking for 40-60 minutes will help you out. Walk fast, break a sweat. Ask for the top floor in the hotel and take the stairs. Become a picky eater, make the conscious choice of foods that wont be gut bombs and cause you to rather sit on the couch rather than excercise in your room. Start thinking about portion control too; worse part about traveling is most of the food at restaurants comes on big plates. I dislike wasting food but I also dislike being uncomfortably full. So either pick the smaller sized meals, lots of places now have 'the lighter side' fares or ask for a box with your meal and as soon as your meal arrives cut it in half and put half in the box to go. Reward yourself, have a food cheat day. Youll find that youll look forward to it but as time goes on you might not hit it as hard as you did at first cuz it sucks that much more the next day getting back into the routine with all that stuff in your gut. Keep a log of your excercises, make it fun. Track what states or cities youve worked out in. Also, have a buddy that helps keep you motivated and focused. You need to want it. You can do it, stay focused, and dont beat yourself up when you miss a day. Hardest part is the decision to start, once you make it a routine and habit, itll be easier to keep.
  16. Oh I completely agree with you about awareness of land designation...as tax payers, voters and especially as hunters and anglers (people directly footing the bill for on the ground conservation) we should pay close attention to how the designations affect future generations as well as what we try to do now. I'm guilty as the next guy whining about things on a forum but when it comes down to informing the policy makers I find other personal, work etc reasons to take my attention and keeping me from actually voicing my opinion or concerns. Anyways...I ramble too much. Maybe our posts will help keep this thread at the top though so more will pay attention. Thanks for the dialogue Alpine..
  17. You mean a wilderness or conservation area being changed to non wilderness designation? Without me doing additional research, Id have to say no. To my knowledge once a primitive, wilderness, or conservation area has been designated it has not been 'undesignated'. However what I did mean in my post is that the land management agencies were are required by the wilderness act to do wilderness designation reviews on their forests or land. They will have certain pieces of acreage without roads (or maybe with roads that can be closed) and meeting the primary essential elements of wilderness designation. Once these areas are identified and selected, the public process is started( public meetings, etc) and final determination. Congress can also get involved in wilderness designations but Im not familiar with that. Wish I could give you more info, all Im stating is what I am familiar with what has been done.
  18. The last two national monuments ( Agua Fria and Ironwood National Forest) were designated in Az, are multi use and hunting is allowed, as are atv and utvs. Wilderness designation by forest and blm gets reviewed on an cyclical basis, as long as a roadless area meets the primary components it can be designated. Wilderness designation is a public process, where we can all (and should) provide feed back to the land management agency. whereas national monument designation is executive order....and the managing agency is forced to deal with the new designation and create management plans etc. Im not sayings its right or wrong, Id just like the facts to be clear on perception vs facts.

    snow chains

I've bought them from Auto parts stores, you can also pick them up from Amazon. You likely know this but buy them for your tire size. If it's going to be really hairy, run all 4. Ive generally run lower profile on the fronts (cables vs rear chains) so that when I turned it won't hit my frame or rub the wheel wells or hit the upper ball joint and/or control arm <--but this depends on your back spacing and most of the time you should be fine with OEM Toyota rims/tires. Also, for the most part you can get away with running only rear chains, fronts will help when you need to pull on grades or extra traction in slick or icy conditions. Also buy extra rubber bungee cords as they will help with any additional tightening you need to do. Best thing is put the chains on before you need them and practice before you are in the snow. Some of the newer hybrid are pretty slick on and off and you barely need to hug the tires to get them on. Sounds like a fun trip in January.

My Elk Hunt video. "The Perfect Storm"

great job Shelvin, It was awesome to watch you keep the bow drawn for so long as well as the incredible job you did repositioning yourself and moving to the right while at full draw with an incoming bull. You rocked it under pressure. You earned that bull for sure. Thank you for posting the video and kudos to the guys for putting that video together so well.
