    Anyone hunt Brown/Grizzly in Alaska?

+1.Unless you can talk an immediate family member (brother, sister, dad and mom...can't recall on grandparents) into moving to Alaska you'd better start saving too. In some areas, guides are booking 3 years out and most start upwards of 15K. If you are set on a brown/grizz, I'd suggest going to the Safari Club International Convention in Las Vegas in Feb 2014 or 2015 and talking to as many outfitters as you can and decide what type of hunt experience you want and which outfitter can provide it. I personally think brown/grizz has become one of the more expensive hunts in the last 10 years, at least doubling in that time frame. Dall Sheep and goat hunts are still fairly reasonable, respective to the same time frame and compared to bears. Cheaper solution is always the Alaskan black bear, DIY or guided. Inland or coastal. If you go in with one or two other hunters for DIY you might expect to pay around 2K each for everything (plus or minus depending on airfare, location, etc ) guided will run you around 3-6k depending on what options you decide on. I could be off on my estimates and others should chime in. If I had to choose between dall, bear or goat. I'd go bear because I think it the cost will only continue to climb but that's just a guess.

No harm no foul. Best part is all the comments kept your post on top. I wasnt trying to be a jerk, just gave up on trying to take a look at your pup since I was having browser issues. Nothing like dangling a carrot that someone else can see and smell but you cant. Ya dig?The web issues happens every time I have tried to look at your webpage. I can give you more details abt whats happening in a PM if you want to solve it. Anyways, who cares... GLWS I think wire haired GSP are great dogs. Hope she finds a good hunting home.

Bump for a nice inexpensive rifle. Never shot this rifle but it was well balanced and not too heavy.

Any sucess in 24A this weekend?

Not to derail this thread but... I also know of people that report 'No Kill' on their survey when they did kill. They worry that somehow G&F is going to track their harvest and punish them by not 'allowing' them to draw a tag the next year. I think this all comes out in the wash and tag numbers are determined by deer survey results that they do each year as well as stratified data (with errors from false and lack of reporting) from hunter harvest surveys. If you want your opinion to be heard re: tag numbers etc, voicing them on a forum isn't the best venue. I would also encourage every hunter to visit a G&F office when the hunt recommendations are open for comment. Become familiar with how the data are used and what goes into the recommendations. As some have already stated about these meetings, there are generally only a few (like 3 or 4 tops) hunters present at each meeting. Be vocal and involved.

    Looking for a willing mentor

Welcome to the site! What part of the state do you live or were you planning on hunting for deer and where is your javelina hunt? BOW is a great introduction to many things hunting and outdoors. hope you made some good connections there. I know women that have been going to them for years. Perhaps if other members know what city you live in and hunts you were planning it might help others to free up some time or invite you along if they have the same hunt or neighboring.

Glad you could maximize on the opportunity. Amazing how soft those images are compared to the ruggedness one normally would see looking from those vistas. Thanks for sharing!

Amazing bull a 10 year old may never top!!

Amazing bull! Congrats to father and son on a lifetime animal. Not saying that hard work paid off because they obviously put time and effort into preparing and hunting but man some people have the best luck.

Help me choose the better bino harness

I am interested in responses as well. I too want a new harness. Elk Hunter had a pretty good review on a number of harnesses this past summer issue and I would like to see some of the harnesses in person. I can't stand the regular harnesses with all elastic and want something that holds them firm to chest and keeps out dust, twigs and moisture.

In 2009 I saw a troop of coati above Fossil Springs dam near the flume trail. It was a pretty good sized troop too. Always cool to see those critters.

Jerk stick and jerky gurus--I need your help

I appreciate the feedback fellas. Spent some additional time reading some jerky and sausage preparation forums. If meat or sausages are cold smoked, it is ideal to use cure, sodium nitrate is just a simple one that works well. As you all stated and as I was thinking, as long as the meat is stored in the freezer (long term) or fridge (short term) after being dried it wont need to be cured. I'll have to try the recipe that was posted! Thanks for the feedback though guys.
  24. So I have made jerky before as well as my own blend of spices for chorizo and sausage. This year I wanted to make up a bunch of jerk sticks but when I started reading the ingredients of the pre made packaged kits...I was disgusted with what I found. Nearly all of the blends had MSG in them and the rest have sodium nitrates for the curing. I am comfortable with creating my own spice or flavor blend am will do some additional research but what I'm curious about is do I need all that sodium and sodium nitrates in order for the meat to cure? After I make the sticks I will dehydrate or smoke and then vacuum seal and store in my freezer, seems like that will be adequate enough. I'm open to you alls thoughts and feedback though.
