    NWTF

Open Letter to the AZ State NWTF Membership Fellow Members, During the last board meeting of the AZ State Chapter of the NWTF the board of directors voted to oppose HB2072. The board also voted to send a letter to House Representative Jerry Weirs, the sponsor of the bill, explaining the reason for our opposition. Our opposition was based on a number of problems we found with the legislation. Our strongest objection was that the bill intended to completely bypass the Arizona Game and Fish Commission and the process for allocating big game tags. The legislation also directed the earnings, from the sale of the tags, away from the AZ Game and Fish Dept. with sole discretion of expenditure going to the organization that was awarded the big game tags. The legislation as written would appear to benefit a single organization. The only organization that fits the structure of this legislation is The AZ Sportsmen for Wildlife Conservation. If not a member of this organization you, and many of the residents of Arizona, may not see a benefit from these game tag sales. We view this to be a misappropriation of the state’s wildlife resources. This bill, HB2072, was pulled from the committee hearing before it could be presented. We believe this was due to the outcry of sportsmen’s organizations from around the state. Subsequent to that action the AZ Sportsmen for Wildlife has sent a letter to sportsmen around the state extolling the virtues of this legislation. It appears as if they may try to introduce this proposed legislation again. This letter contains misinformation concerning the AZ Game and Fish Dept. and implies that they are to blame for the decline of AZ game species as well as the decline in hunter participation. The AZ State Chapter of the NWTF is a member of the Wildlife Conservation Council. The WCC is a committee of the AZ Sportsmen for Wildlife Conservation. The AZ Sportsmen for Wildlife has repeatedly implied that they speak for the members of these organizations. They do not speak for the AZ State Chapter of the NWTF. It should also be understood that the AZ State Chapter does not support this proposed legislation and furthermore does not condone the method and tactics with which this legislation was brought forth. In order to maintain our integrity and preserve the relationship that we enjoy with the AZ Game and Fish Department and the Arizona sportsmen’s community we have elected to resign from the Wildlife Conservation Council and separate ourselves form the actions and opinions of the AZ Sportsmen for Wildlife. Respectfully, Board of Directors AZ. State Chapter of the NWTF.

  6. Gary, Congrats on another superb Coues buck, sometimes it works very fast but I know the hours you have logged the last few years. All I can say is Geno is a Coues tactical machine! The knowledge he has is 2nd too none. You know how us men are, we are stubborn and don’t listen to others ways of doing things. This Coues buck was credit to Geno, for just giving a few coues bucks habits during this January hunt. Sometimes when you get a text with a few keys words , you can take them to heart or just let them vanish. Thanks Geno!

Have you ever missed a shot because of a steep angle?

After thinking for awhile, I must be getting old..... Sometime 22-24 years ago I was shooting a shoot at Ben Avery and I had overheard a few older guys talking about angle shots. What I thought I heard was; if it is a deep angle downhill shot then you subtract 1/2 the distance and if it is uphill you double the distance.... Well fast forward 4 months to the September Archery deer hunt in 17b. I just crested a hill between 2 mountains and heard some noise and as I looked up. Here was a buck of a lifetime! Thinking back he was a minimum 170" plus. Ok.....I split my 40 and 50 yard pin....Then this thought came during full draw........, I need to double the yardage, it is up hill.... ok crap I only have a 60 yard pin.......hummmmmmm ok put the 60 pin on top of his back. Welllllllll: As I watch the arrow sail 2 foot over his back the rest is history. I think I shot 3 -4 arrows after that in disgust! Trying to figure how, I missed so badly. Every time I double the distance I was sailing them arrows into no man’s land. Then I tried cutting the distance, would you know, I hit what I aimed at. Lesson number 280.... Do not always believe what you hear. Try for yourself before a great opportunity presents itself and vanishes in a blink of an eye.

    end of the year buck

Well after passing many bucks this fall and waiting for two bucks or bust, sometime I wonder what I was thinking. after only seeing small bucks this December and also enjoying the snow and 20 degree weather, I said self, I think you are cold and tired and the freezer is empty, time to enjoy some tasty Coues meat. This happen to be the smallest buck but a very enjoyable time hunting the elusive archery coues buck. A good way to end a Sunday hunt and get ready for 2012.
