Info in my magazine says that the 300WSM and the 300WIN MAG have the same velocity with the same bullet stlye and weight with same barrel lenght (like 26") but the 300WSM uses less powder. The reason is like stated before it is more efficient (short/fat). The 300WSM only needs a 26" barrel. Now if you were to have 30" barrel on the 300WIN MAG then that is when it has an advantage, more barre/time for extra powder to burn= more velocity, about 100-200 more fps than with 24" or 26". Problem is that not many of us want to lug around that long of a barrel. Same artice said that there is a limit to burn rate. The example that was givin was a 300 Remington ULTRA MAG not the short. They put a regular bed sheet hanging in front of the barrel at 10 feet away with about 2 feet lying on the floor back to the shooter then shot the rifle, again a 300 Remington ULTRA MAG. They found a quite a bit of raw unburnt powder at the bottom of the sheet! An INefficient way to get more velocity. I have been eyeing a 300WSM for a LONG time but I can't stand to pay $25 a box of bullets. heck even the dies a expensive.

Rembrant As for your concerns: 1. I don't think that you have to worry about Mr. Big finding a receptive doe just yet. I belive that the "rut" has to do with the shorter day/longer nights than with temp. Does will go into estrous soon, but not quite yet. If he is really big he is not wasting time or energy on a doe that is not quite ready. 2. I think the cold/snowy weather changed his rutine a little. When it is cold they move more because it cold. Stick with it and soon enough his will come buy again (HOPEFULLY) Work, babies and life in general make it hard some times but all the more rewarding when finally every thing works out!!

Sorry, your question was how does AZGFD you won't use both tags???? They might not..........but I or any one in my hunting party (my family) will not take two deer in the same year because it is stealing, cheating, lying, unfair, POACHING, and if you get caught you will amoung other things lose your right to hunt for 1-5 years!!!!
-
AZ Game & Fish will sell you a Archery tag and you can apply for and get drawn for the fall draw hunt, so yes you can have two tags in your hand at one time BUT you can only take (1) deer per calender year. If you shoot it with your bow, rifle, or hit it with your truck for that matter you still get only (1) deer.

That same thing happened to my wife! We went scouting for Mulies 2 years ago in 32. My wife had a point and click camera that she brought along to "take picures of deer" I laughed and thought "yea right" but she was with me scouting so.... On a hill top watching a hill/mountian a fork whitetail came feeding down to us for about 30-40 min untill he got to about 150 yards or so, my wife stood up and said "I am going to go take a picture of him" and started to walk to him!!! I told her in MY EXPERT OPINION "Don't, he is going to run! Well my wife ignored MY EXPERT OPINION and got to 50 yards, click....40 yards click......30 yards click......20.....10 yards!!. She ran out of film walked with him as he feed for a while, then came back and said "I don't know why pepole say it is so hard to hunt Whitetails!!" I told her that fork had never seen a human before and that is why he never ran. I think I herd my wife quietly ay "yea right" Funny how Coues make our EXPERT OPINIONS more like EXPERT QUESSES!!

Well that did it for me...............I"M MOVING TO KLONDYKE!!!!!!
-
Seems fummy to that some would not use it! As far as I am concerned there is no option when you have your tag in hand........GOOOOO If you think you can't WHERE ARE YOUR PRIORITIES!!!!!
-
CHD Not to say that stuff never happened, it probably did just not to the extent you mentioned. The STORY gets very...........interesting by the the time it gets all the way to Colorado. There are illigals and drug "trade" persons In southern AZ. We were amazed at the route some were taking to aviod ANYBODY, hunters , law inforcement, etc. One thing is very true is that Border Patrol are very goog group of guys in general. Just let them know where you are camped and they will keep an eye out. We personally invite them over for coffee for just that reason but mostly because these guy work EVERY DAY were we go to hunt!

AZOD?

The state building downtown. Only 7 dollars each! It is a good place to hang out and they are VERY helpful if you need them to be or they leave you alone once you get the hang of it!

Ernesto, where in 36c where you hunting? In the King anvil, Margaritas ranch, or down closer to boarder?
-
I was also going to post a question about this same issue! My question is about how the HOT weather combined with the fact that there is no moon affect this first hunt? Will they water at night? I would think (HOPE) that they will not water at night becaues of the lack of moon light. That combined with the fact that it is so HOT they will water during the day!?!? I don't know, what are your guys thoughts? Past experiences?

What "on average" are the dementions of a adult coues buck? For example the outside measurement of the ears? The distance from top of back to bottom of chest? Sholder height? Front of cheast to tail? I ask because I understand the balistics of my rifle load, bullet drop at different yardages etc. I have a do use a Leica rangefinder to determine distance, but knowing where to hold the cross hairs is my concern. I don't know or understand about adjusting my cross hair setting of my scope for each shot, I personally don't even move my scope once I have it set. I also tape a yardage drop info to my stock of my rifle to verify befor the shot. My point being if I know what a coues buck measures from top of back to bottom of chest that would give me a referance point.

Did any one get to get there goal for the opening weekend?

what is the best grain to shoot out of a 7mm rem?

The short answer would be what ever your rifle likes (tight grouping, accuracy wise) But if you are new to the rifle I would start out with light bullet weight. Maybe a Nosler 140gr 150gr ballistic tip or a Hornady SST in 139gr 154gr. In my opinion the "plastic tip" bullets are are perfect for the white tail, 75 to 125 pound average buck, loooong shots, etc. You will hear lots of different opinons, lots of them will be what shoots good in that owners particular rifle, not what is good for your rifle. So take time and try them all. My rifle lucky enough shots regular Remington 150gr Cor-Locs with great groups. ACCURACY is what is most important, not so much bullet type or brand, heck as long as it is reliable brand and a soft point of some kind. While these whitetail are VERY tough they will go down if hit in the right place. -
when I go hunting the only thing I prepare (scouting, etc) for is so that I can see something and then get a shot. Very quickly after that is when I miss, heck I think the only time I actually get anything is dumb butt luck.

Does any one have a good date as to when the draw results will be out? All I know is July some time. I also applied by computer, does that mean I will get results any quicker? Only rifle hunters know what I mean when I say that June to July is the longest month of the year! Great forum!!!!!

My wife and I drew tags in 36C 1st hunt! The rest of our hunting group did pretty good also Muzz cow tag and coues as well! But we know of some guy that has got drawn for 3 years in a row for BULL ELK, one early rifle, one late rifle, and now Muzz!!!! We have to find out who he is sleeping with or blackmailing.

WYORAWHIDE, THANKS FOR THE TIP ON ESKIMO.COM, NOW IF I CAN ONLY FIND SOME ONE ON THE RANGE WITH A CHRONO SET UP TO SEE AT WHAT SPEED I AM SHOOTING MY RELOADS. -
Thanks for such a GREAT web site, full of info and the fact that we can all share with each other the love of the outdoors and the great chase for such an advisary. We would also be interested in some Coues.com stuff, a T-shirt with a good close up WT Coues buck I think might be better than the foto of the buck and doe at th top of the web page. That picture might be too busy or small. I would wish for a heavy button down in dark green or brown with a logo or something. THANKS AGAIN!
