    SC Rez bucks

thanks for all the comments everyone, i've been watching all the bucks coming in for awhile now and man there are some really really nice archery bucks and a lot of good hard horns too, this year was the year for wide bucks for me, i seen about 4 bucks that were all over 19" outside easily, i'd guess the widest guy i seen was probably at least 21" outside, the wide buck i posted had a 18 1/2" inside spread and his outside was just over 20", another one of our friends took a really heavy 3x4 that also had a 18 1/2" inside spread and that buck grossed 103", i'll see if i can get a picture of that buck to post, also heard of a lot of 4x4's killed this year as well on the San Carlos so i think it was a really good season for a lot of people. Aoo' Dish Neh says it all Ernesto! haha i liked that. Grim, hunting the San Carlos for the elusive Coues deer is just as exciting as anywhere else in my opinion, we have everything from the desert cacti bucks all the way up to the ponderosa pine bucks and of course everything inbetween, San Carlos is very diverse as far as habitat goes, like i said its got the desert floor creatures up to the deep woodland creatures so choosing the San Carlos could give you a lot of options, but of course there is the cost, i understand completely how a lot of people would like to give it a try but are held back by the cost, it is a lot of money and not everyone can afford it and thats too bad, i wish everyone could have a chance to come here at least once and have an experience hunting some of the big game San Carlos has to offer, if you want more info on the rez or would like to see some pictures of the land or any other questions send me and email or PM. good luck to all remaining hunters on their seasons, take lots of pictures to share with us all! Scouting Trip Sheds

haha...........AOO DISH NEH don't really mean anything much, just a made up slang word me and my Hopi bro used alot to tease our Navajo roomate, AOO' means yes in Navajo so we used it whenever he asked us a yes/no question to answer YES to him, DISH NEH means sort of like "i said so!" in Navajo but we just added it for i dont' know why, but yea all it is is just a longer version of saying YES. Unit 28 Bull

jlhcoues, hey i'm glad you've had some good experiences hunting the coues on the rez, man there are some giants in all the units all over the place, lots of hidden pockets no one ever hunts, once the season comes around they just disappear! haha, thats how it goes i guess, me and a couple of my cousins are trying to score on a nice NT 5x4 with some killer mass but he keeps dodging us, see if we can't get him this year, going to try for some big muleys opening weekend though, the herd of elk along the rez line and Unit 28 just keeps growing and growing, hopefully soon enough there'll be a ton of them in there and just be all over the place, its a nice low land place for them to hang out i think, all in them pinons and canyons, well you should get back up in there again sometimes with your son and take some pictures of them bulls, don't forget the packframe for them racks! DAN

    Unit 28 Bull

Man thats one nice rack there your son picked up! seen a lot of the elk along the southeastern border of the rez that share the same characteristics of that bull, not too much on mass but man they have some long and wild points! the area your son found those skulls is the same area where Mr. Agnew took his 454 a few years ago, we've filmed a lot of elk in that same area too that are very impressive, starting to look really good along there these days, anyway thought i would post a pic of a nice 6x6 that was killed in the same area as well, he's not much on mass but pretty good on tines with 63" main beams, he's the bull on the right in the pic. and one more thing, i think you're right about the elk wandering off the higher elevations to die, seen a lot of sick or wounded elk along the border too, hanging out by themselves down a little lower than the rest of the bulls, i bet if you do some good walking back up in there you can find some more nice racks. Old School Coues Sheds

Here's a few pictures of some trophies of the past, first pic is of a really nice 4pt single shed compared to a set of mounted 110-115 gross sheds found back in the early 90's. the second pic is of the same bleached 4pt shed which was found back in the 90's compared to a non-typical pick up skull dating back to the 80s, it scores maybe close to 105 gross or so, no score on the single 4pt shed, maybe some of you coues experts at guessing scores can come up with something, last pic is of a couple of nice muley bucks, the typical buck measures 32" and the non-typical has an outside spread of 34 3/4", just a few pictures to get everyone a little more fired up for the season, happy hunting! I got my elk

congrats on a nice bull azhuntnut, i like his tine's, very long! your first pic of him sort of reminds me of the bull J. McClendon took awhile back, got the same shape to him, good looking bull, good job. DAN
  9. nice buck Coues7, my first coues i killed was a 3pt that grossed 92", my buck is probably just a little bit smaller than the one you have pics of so i'd say he goes mid to upper 90s, possible 100" buck but i agree with others that he's a little narrow on spread and his beams are on the shorter end, but those tines of his are pretty long and even! i think the first pic you have up of him shows him best, nice looking coues though. Old School Coues Sheds

always Drawing all the time, always up for any project big or small, i can do some sketches and i'll email them to you Amanda and maybe you can post them in the forum with the related topic, i was looking at that awhile back and was wondering if anything ever got done with that cuz i'd be interested in getting a shirt, well i'll get some stuff drawn and submitted soon. my cuzin-bro knows its all in good fun from us, just sometimes gotta be a mean apache to him from time to time, he's long gone now though but will be back soon so no more AOO' DISH NEH lately. DAN

    Old School Coues Sheds

well the 4pt shed does look like it could be from a muley at first glance but you really have to have it in hand to see the coues character come out in it, of course i'm not 100% that it is true coues, could possibly be a hybrid or even muley shed but from what i've seen i'm very certain this shed comes off a coues, to be a muley and that small with 4 points coming off the main beam very perfectly is sort of a far reach for me, either way my main purpose of posting the pic is just that, to get insight on what others think about it from the pictures i have put up, any way you look at it it sure is a very nice shed...... ...now, what does AOO' DISH NEH mean? haha, well it don't really mean anything at all, it's more of a Navajo slang word me and my fellow roomates made up and use all the time, in the Navajo Language AOO' means YES, and DISH NEH sort of means I SAID SO, so i guess you could say that it means..."yes, i said so!" but thats not what we meant it to mean, we just made it up to make fun of our Navajo roomate, tease him all the time, so we use it in the everyday to mean YES.....and the artwork at the bottom of my posts i did back when i was in Jr. High and later finished in HS, it belongs to AT now. DAN

nice pics LittleBear, man that 3x4 sure is a nice one for sure, good luck on them this coming season! DAN
  14. well thanks for the entertainment CHEF, that was fun for sure, been a little slow lately......well that coues was pretty tough to see, that was one of my 10 guesses but i got him backwards, i thought his head was were his backend is haha, that was one of the blobs that sorta didn't fit in with the rest of the land, but my guess was down below in the shadows, don't know what i was looking at ? DAN
  15. think i see a lil' guy too but not sure, its a lil' late and the eyes are halfway open. DAN

    more San Carlos elk sheds...

went back out again this past weekend, decided to go to an area that had been covered already by at least 5 or 6 crews but i found a really big 7pt here last year and was hoping to maybe get lucky and find this years set or maybe the match from last year, turns out everyone cleaned house pretty good, not even any old sheds left haha, we did find one nice 6pt, scored it right at 161, his G-3 was 22", pretty good looking antler but no match, getting pretty hot out there now too but still no snakes or bears, not that we seen anyway, plan to go back out at least a few more time this year so hopefully will still be able to bring out some more racks, happy hunting everyone and break out them fishing poles cuz it looks to be some good fishing this summer! DAN

    more San Carlos elk sheds...

Hey everyone, anyone out looking for horns? the shed forum has slowed down a little bit of lately but hopefully it'll get going again soon, well i finally got a chance to go out again and made another trip to the hills, picked up 2 sets, one from last year and one from this year, the brown set i have found now 3 years in a row, this bull has dropped in almost the exact same location each year, i think he's on the decline starting this year though, last year's 6x6 set gross scored 377 and net 371, and this year's set gross scores 366 and nets 343, he's got 23" of deductions this year, too bad but the good thing is that he's still out there so it'll be interesting to see next year's set when the time comes, well i sent the pics to Amanda so they'll be up soon, good luck on all your adventures in the woods everyone! more San Carlos elk sheds...

yea we picked up some pretty good racks that day, too bad the 7x4 was broken though, the broken side looked to be a little more massive than the 7pt side, that brown set from this year is still out on the mtn somewhere so i plan to make another pass through the area and try to find just that brown set, it'll be worth it to cover the entire area really good just looking for that set, but then again its always worth it to just be out there all day long and then come home all beat up from the hike, i hope to get to go out again this coming weekend and hit up a place we havn't been to in a couple of years, gonna take the camera again for sure and try to get some more pictures, happy shed hunting everyone, let's see them horns. DAN

    Off to a good start...

Had a pretty good Saturday out for the first time looking for antlers, my cousin and i "racked" up a total of 12 antlers, picked up 3 fresh sets and then 1 set from last year that we missed, also a couple of singles from last year and then some chew'd stuff, chanced it with bad weather in the forecast but it was all okay, it just sprinkled on us most of the day and then we got snowed on just a little bit but not enough to take us off the mtn, anyway both straps on our little pack broke from too many antlers on there and plus they were wearing out anyway, eventually we made it back to the truck right at dark, looks like the bulls been doing some good fighting, lots of broken tines, only the 6x6 set was in good condition with no broken tines, we rough scored him at about 325, its really mismatched though so a net score wouldn't be too good for what he looks like, anyway hope everyone else is out looking and finding some good ones, post them up and lets check them out, sent the pics to Amanda so they should be up sometime soon. DAN

    Off to a good start...

hey whats up hunterdude, yea all those racks are off the San Carlos, some good fishing up in the mtns right about now, just barely starting to get good, my uncles have been catching some pretty big bass at some of the stock tanks up there within the last couple of weeks so the fishing is really going to be good, at the Lake there in town i hear the crappie fishing is starting to take off too, looks like there's going to be some good fishing this year at the lake, the water is up pretty good right now too, i still gotta get my pole and gear and do some of that too, hope you make it back to the rez for more fishing this year! DAN
  21. One of the first bucks of 2005 from the San Carlos reservation is a NT 5x6 with a very impressive looking rack, i've emailed photos to amanda to post on this thread so as soon as she gets them loaded up they should be posted, sorry but no in the field photos, still a very nice rack with some neat extras. San Carlos 5x6 NT coues

Ron Price of Gilbert AZ dropped this awesome NT 5x6 on New Years day while hunting in Unit C on the San Carlos Apache Reservation, Ron green scores his buck at 125 B&C and says it nets 119 7/8 B&C, truly and awesome buck and well deserved for the all day walk he put in. here's the links to Ron's buck. http://www.coueswhitetail.com/san_carlos_h...oues_ron_3w.jpg http://www.coueswhitetail.com/san_carlos_h...oues_ron_2w.jpg http://www.coueswhitetail.com/san_carlos_h...oues_ron_1w.jpg DAN

    San Carlos Archery Buck

yes plz post in the SC section, i have a few more pics of a 5x6 NT taken this past new years day, i'll be sending you those photos to post for me as well, thanks for the help Amanda! DAN
  24. My cousin recently harvested this nice buck on the San Carlos around the Barlow Pass area, he's a 3x4 with a 13 1/2" inside spread, he's got a busted G-1 and G-3 on his left side, we grossed him at about 85", and on another note, one of my uncle's hunters dropped a very heavy 5x6 NT buck this past weekend, a very nice rack! i'll see if i can get permission to post those pictures, if i do i'll post in the Rifle Section. DAN
  25. Yup takin care of predators when you can is always good, getting out there in them open flats and calling them in from hundreds of yards out is good hunting with the guys, i got this lil' guy this past weekend at my uncles camp, he was snooping around camp looking for a bite, he only ran about 30 yards out and stopped to look back, as soon as he seen me he bolted and i got him just as he was about to drop into the draw.
