Ok I was out with my family looking for wildlife on Stoneman Lake road off I-17 on Monday. We saw lots of animals including a heard of elk 150 strong. No bulls. Is this normal for this time of year or have they just dropped the antlers already? I didn’t look to close for bulls with no antlers because i saw a 20+ herd of deer with 2 bucks in it. But really 150 elk and not a spike that I could find.... What do you all know about elk and their winter/spring habits? Do the bulls leave the heard? Any Browns found yet? This is one of the bucks I saw that day.

Ok, I am going shed hunting this weekend. I have a couple plans but have not settled in on a set destination. I also have a cousin that said he wants to go. The thing is that he is flaky and probably will back out on me at the last minute. I would like to go with someone for good conversation and maybe make a few shed hunting trips this spring. I live in Mesa and plan on leaving early Friday morning. If anyone wants to go put some miles on their boots with me lets me know. I am always willing to hear some good ideas about where to go as well. I was thinking around about going up around Young or on Anderson Mesa by Lake Mary. Brian 623 693-3205

I have a week off starting the 18th. I hope I can find a few browns. To bad the forest roads are all closed around flagstaff. I found 3 antlers in an hour last year in june but all were hard white. Wish I had more time that trip.

I plan on my first outing in a couple of weeks. if they havent dropped maybe i will find some still being carried around and get a few pictures with my canon. sooner or later you will see fresh sheds or a bull with one horn and then you will know its time to get serious.

My Dad, Grandpa, Brother and Brothers friend have rifle bull tags for unit 10 starting tomorrow. here are some bulls we saw this week scouting. got lucky and had my Canon XTI out and ready and shot some pics of this 6x6 when he ran across the road. We also glassed up a really nice bull in shooting range.... 650 yards. The Rem Ultra mag would have done the job but my Canon got it done for the scouting trip. I wish i was on that ticket. my dad saw bulls in a good glassing spot every morning... I could only be there 1 day and I saw 5 bulls that day . One morning they found 7 bulls in the canyon they plan on glassing for the morning hunt.

The hunt was a good time despite the Artic cat Prowler breaking down on us twice and not seeing a buck with more than forks. We had fun glassing up doe and spikes and walking back to the truck.... Anyway I found this set of coues antlers when I got up from glassing. Just sitting next to eachother about 10 feet behind me. Both have drop tines but one sides about 4 inches long.

Took my 14 year old brother inlaw on the unit 27 Jr. Hunt this year and had a blast. We didnt bring home a buck but I gave him every chance possible. He shot and missed 9 times... Sunday morning the 3rd day of the hunt I glasses up a 4x4 muley checking out a bunch of does and made a game plan. well on our way to a down the ridge on our way to get a shot I looked up and saw this buck with a spike coming down from where I saw him going to where we thought we could shoot. He walked down and accross the ridge across from us getting closer with every step. We let him get to about 200 yards and my brother inlaw got set and fired. That buck jumped 3 feet in the air if an inch but only moved about 10 yards. he shot again and the buck Kicked his back 2 feet in the air. still only moving a little ways down the ridge getting even a little closer to us. At this point I told him to move over to a tree and use a branch because the sitting stance wasnt working out. He ended up shooting twice more before running out of shells in his gun and that buck walked down the ridge and out of site not a hurry in the world. I wish i had brought some shooting sticks or something to help him keep that gun from shaking all over the mountain side when he saw how nice that buck was.

My goal every year is to pick a unit that I can get drawn. I want to go every year if it is in a good unit or not. so I hope I get that 1st choice december coues hunt but if not I will probably get the unit 27-28 Early coues hunt that had a 99% draw rate last year. After I put in my dad reminded me that if i do get that december 27 hunt I could have probably drawn in the strip..... but I still I hope I get 1 of the 20 tags in the late coues hunt. but I hope that my group does not get 3 diffrent hunts since their were 5 adults and a yourth that put in this year... but if we do I get 3 hunting trips. I guess that would be ok too. Good luck everyone and I hope we find out soon. I keep checking a couple times a day. Brian

I was in camping near Lake Mary outside of flagstaff this past weekend with a group of dads. We had a great trip but me and another dad at the campout took the boys out to look for antlers. We found 3 elk sheds but when we got back one of the fires was smoking like a freight train. They had started a fire (over a tree stump) and thought that throwing dirt on it would put it out. Well they were wrong because I looked over a few minutes after we got back and the fire started the pine needles and saw dust from cutting the tree up on fire. I ran over and stomped it out but noticed that the wind was starting the ground dust to smolder all around it. If we didn’t come back when we did it could have been the 4th fire in Arizona right now. We went up to Ashurst lake and got 10 gallons of water and drowned the tree stump and area around it. Everyone please pour more water than is needed on it just in case. Make sure your fires are dead out. Killing the flame is not enough. You have to kill the heat. I am sure the wind was not blowing as bad when they left but they were still very irresponsible for not pouring the 5 gallons on it “that I knew they had”. It could have been very costly.

I hunted unit 17b for the first time last year and got a nice 3by with good mass and could have shot a couple of forks. Did well for the first time in the area and having to learn where to go. Found a few places after I shot my buck but ran out of days in the 3 day weekend for my inlaw to get his buck. If you have access to some of the privet land you would do really well but their is some good public places to well. anyway. I would hunt it again. 27 is a good hunt too thats were I am going this year. (I hope i get a tag)

My church has a Father and Son's campout coming up in June. I am in charge of picking the location and the activities. Does anyone know of a great camping area that 50 or so people could be comfortable? Water is a plus but trees are a must. I am looking for an area in the woods not a pay per night camp ground. Thank you from a Cousewhitetail.com a fan!!!

What weird stuff have you glassed or happen well glassing for game?
Brian27 replied to seek100plus's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Glassing in unit 8 during a bull elk hunt a watched a coyote chase a jack rabbit around a hill for a few minutes. The smart rabbit got away. I thought about shooting the coyote but didn’t want to scare off any elk in the area..... not that I had any luck that year. -
I may be taking this route. How is the quality of the kit? Is it all steel? any aluminum/plastic? Thanks for the heads up. Brian
