Whats In A Name
elkhunter replied to GameHauler's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
When I started hunting, I liked elk hunting, right now it's at the bottom of my list, Coues deer being #1, pigs #2 and elk #3, the cow elk JR hunts are what got me into hunting, not that crazy about elk anymore -
Congrats on your pigs again dude!!

Def not Coues deer but Javelina are my next favorite game to hunt , here's how my Dad and Sister got their pigs today, during the 2 days we lost count of how many coues does we saw...bout 50? But we did find 4 Bucks, just a bunch of small 3pts and a spike Day 1: Glassed up a herd couple ridges over, Dad and Stacy (sister) put on a stalk and got within 30 yards of the herd, 2 arrows were flung and both ended up hitting branches before reaching the pigs. Afternoon was spent watching coues deer and yotes, no pigs. Day 2: Stacy glassed up a herd of pigs quite a ways, atleast 3/4 miles out, a stalk was set up and the wind changed 180 degrees bout half way over to the herd. So we had to change plans and head in a different direction. We split up at a base of a hillside and I headed up the hill to watch the whole stalk unfold and to give directions to the herd. My dad and Stacy made a stalk that lasted bout 45 minutes, soon they were within 25 yards of 8 pigs, my sister took a few steps forward and made an excellent downhill shot at 23 yards, her pig fell over on the spot, then Dad wailed on the call and brought in heck of a boar at 15 yards, his arrow flew true and his pig went 30 yards and fell over, this is Stacy's first big game and she got it with a bow, it certainly won't be the last. Stacy Dad The Weiss Crew Ketchup and Mustard hands I'll be heading up north tomorrow for my hunt

I got a 94-class buck on the second day of the season, before getting him I watched a 70-class buck make a scrape and rub some bushes, recently during pig scouting I found a couple bucks trailing does, today saw 3 bucks and all were trailing does, my hunt was in 34b

Opening day found myself waiting for the light to come up, I got to my spot wayy to early. As the light came up all I could find was a bunch of does and 3 bucks that just wouldn't be worth shooting, the biggest being a mid-70's. Second day: My dad arrived at camp and we headed out into the dark. As the sun rose we found does everywhere and finally found a buck, this buck was a smaller 3x3 that again wasn't worth shooting in a Dec hunt. We moved down the canyon a couple hundred yards to glass at a different angle. Less than a minute into glassing I spotted a buck belows us across the canyon, as soon as I saw him I knew I wanted him so I grabbed the rifle and rangefinder while my dad stayed back to watch the buck, I slithered into a 219 yard shot opportunity and the buck was facing me at this time. I wanted to shoot him before he decided to take off running, my first 2 shots missed to the right by a few inches due to pulling the trigger, the buck took off running and my 3rd shot put him down on the spot. This is my biggest buck yet and is 16 1/2 inches wide! Time to get ready for archery javelina My dad and I

We left his nuts out in the field for a nice yote meal.

The buck I killed this morning had the biggest nut sack I've ever seen on a coues/mule or even a frickin bull elk! His nuts were so huge that it caused abrasions on his inner legs! One side of his leg was actually starting to bleed from having such HUGE NUTS! Check this out, ever seen anything like this? It's my first time shooting a mature buck so I might just be learning new stuff

I was blessed with a 94 incher on Saturday morning
-
Awesome, best of luck dude! This was my first hunt being picky and it paid off, but I won't become too cocky bout shooting big bucks later on, also best of luck with the upcoming baby!

Thanks again~ I grossed this buck at 94, seems a little high but that's what my amature measuring taped him out at, does he look like a 94 inch buck to you guys?

Range Finder that you put on your bow
elkhunter replied to punkrcker1344's topic in Bowhunting for Coues Deer
I shot with a guy who had that setup on his bow, it looks bulky and complicated..I tried using it and it felt awkward looking back and forth from the range and the sight pin...his was a laser rangefinder tho this one looks less complicated! -
I watched a smaller 3x3 buck tear up a cactus the other day and scrape the ground a little

God bless!!!

TLH- I actually have a torn ACL and my LCL is missing, must have snapped 100%, but it was nothing, I was still able to carry this buck out, I wear this carbon fiber brace that prevents any further ligament tears and it holds my knee together, it works pretty well! Will be gettin that reconstructive surgery AFTER pig season!
-
Thanks guys! 25-06--- just gonna do an eruo mount, this buck was 100lbs field dressed so he was a heavy-un, he's a mack daddy compared to the other bucks i've carried out
-
You got better chances seeing a Mt. Lion before seeing a mule deer buck out there, sometimes you'll strike gold and see atleast 10 bucks a day like I did last year. The coues are really spotted, they're still out there but it's no where near a high population, it's def a unit where you'll have to work hard even for a spike

What's the legnth of a coues deer chest from top near the spine to the bottom of their chest? From my past bucks i'm guessing 12-14 inches? Am I about right? Couldn' find this info on coues biology/shot placement
