Yeah, I would have to be pretty hyped up to stick an eight dollar arrow into a tree.... on purpose.
-
The only problem is that they get to choose if it died of natural causes. But yeah, ussually they are pretty cool about it.
-
Really? I was told there was one up near Alpine. The owner of "the bear wallow" restaurant said it was just a few miles away. I guess as long as there are people like the ones in this thread there will be many.

Atleast I know I'm not the only one. Dang body guarding trees.
-
I can't wait for it to open. Maybe I'll pay with a check so they have to check my ID. "And here is your receipt... Mr. Bass"
-
I was expecting something else.... maybe a little moist and smelly. Good to know they are starting to drop now, every year it seems like it takes forever.

Yeah, from the looks of the size of these tires, they look like they came off someones rhino.

Archery deer hunting close to town
BASS replied to codyhuntsaz's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Yeah I never (well I did once, and got very lucky that the guys in the photos didn't snag it) put my cameras near roads, water, or salt. Put them away from where you want along the game trails. Just another tip. -
When I bought my bushnell at cabellas the guy at the counter told me the general rule to use when buying them is to find the longest distance you would want to shoot, then double it. The range finders that say 400 yards accurate (like the bushnell scout) will only range a deer sized target out to 200, but can do trees and such out to 400. So I figure I want to be able to shoot 400 yards, so I think the 800 would be good to go for me. Has anyone else heard anything like that?
-
I don't know which one is best, but I have the Bushnell Pro and it's alright for archery. But I'm thinking about the Swarovski 800 for when I build my rifle this summer.

One of our builders just carries his cell phone, and a GPS. Last year he didn't tag out, but got twelve illegals.

What do I think? I love her, she has great plans to help us all live happier lives. Sad thing is, she actually has a chance.

Archery deer hunting close to town
BASS replied to codyhuntsaz's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in Arizona
Just a heads up, but not too many people will post their secret near by hunting spots. You may get a few private messages though with some good leads. -
Just call it in and give them the basics. Who knows, you may end up with a nice skull.

A buddy of mine has only had one issue down south on a hunt. He drives an old body style suburban, and the rear springs are pretty much shot. I guess he's been pulled over every year by border patrol for suspision of smuggling. If you have ever seen that truck it does ride like there are twenty people in the back of it. But Outdoorlife just said that is one of the top ten most dangerous hunts.
-
Is that the secret? Here I've been waiting until 6:50 pm to drop mine off the day they are due; just to make sure it's on the top. But then again my apps have been rejected so maybe that wasn't work so well.

Looks good to me. How did you join the two back together? I have a pair that is older than the hills, and have been broken.

Well if you have ever owned a nice pair of sunglasses, they ussually give you a micro fiber cloth to clean them with. Each of my pairs of binos has it's own little cloth, and my spotting scope has it's own too. Ussually on the cooler hunts I rub a little scopedope on the lenses, then clean them with that. It keeps them from fogging up too much, and gets the hard grime off. When possible, try to keep the covers on them to keep dust and crap from gathering on the lenses. And when you go to clean them, first try to blow all the garbage off before you touch it. That way the little grain of sand in there isn't rubbed on the glass, scratcing it all up. I think sportsman's has some of the scopedope for like $5, and the microfiber cloth is near the sunglasses for about the same or cheaper.

Through a Hunter's Eyes
BASS replied to tjhunt2's topic in Miscellaneous Items related to Coues Deer
Well the good thing with digital is that you can record an awful lot of stuff on a very small item. I have a cheap ( I think like $20) one I bought from an office supply store that works great. I can record up to two hours of straight talking. I use to use it for our club meetings when I first became the secretary and couldn't keep up when they were having a debate. That would also be cool to have so you could record the elk talking around you. -
That's what I'm looking to end up with. Thanks for the info.

Good luck everyone! I guess I'll put it soon, hopfully I'll get that bull tag I want. Yeah, I know that draw is already over.

Got Deer Mounts Back
BASS replied to Eagle Eye's topic in Photography of Coues Deer and Other Wildlife
Those are some very nice mounts, who did them? I like the one on that far left the most though... but only because all my coues look like it. -
We took off Thursday morning heading for Alpine to my uncle's cabin he has up there for my dad's and I turkey hunt. My uncle (I guess my ex-uncle) and my dad use to always hunt together for everything; and I was lucky enough to tag along on most of their hunts. But when my aunt and him got divorced we only talked a couple times a year. This was our first hunt together in something like eight years. He brought along one of his workers, and the four of us met up in Globe for lunch/dinner. When we got up there, it was already dark so the guns were checked, clothes layed out and then we went out for some night time scouting. We checked a few canyons with the old "oooh-ahhh!" shock gobble, but couldn't get anything to talk to us. So about twelve o'clock we headed back to the cabin. Missedagain had called on the way up there, and told us to get up before the sun came up to so we could get out there about an hour before the sun came up. But after talking most of the night about past hunts, and the antics we all had been through together we all slept in till six thirty the next morning. With the sun up we walked out the front door and were greeted by a small herd of elk only a couple hundred yards away in a near by medow. We loaded up in our truck and started towards big lake. Right away a turkey crossed the road in front of us, followed closly by a cow elk. Any calling we tried was fruitile and didn't return any results. We loaded back up in the truck, and continued on. At about seven fifteen the coffee was kicking in, and a rest stop was going to be needed very soon, we turned down the wrong road but didn't realize it until it was too late, and had to continue on to find a turn around. When we stopped we noticed a small flock walking across the medow approaching a small knoll near where we had parked. My uncles worker and I headed up the knoll hoping to catch them and get a shot before they dissapeared into the thick woods. When we got to the top I looked around and saw the tom looking straight at us from about twenty yards away. I imediatly took a knee, and Seth, sat behind a small grove of trees. When the bird walked out of sight I moved into the trees too directly in front of Seth. He tried to call with a diaphram, but what came out had us both laughing. We asked if I knew how to use one, I said I did, and took another one from him. When I tried to do a cluck it began perfect but then the latex ripped ending it with a loud "buh" To our amazment the tom came walking right back into our only open shooting lane again. I shot and sent him to the ground. We both got up and began heading towards the flopping bird to retrieve it before it got up and started the death run never to be seen again. When we got closer it got up, and with one flap was airborn. A second shot put him back down again, that time for good. When we got to the downed bird we just looked at eachother and agreed that we must never talk about that calling session ever again, and that it must die along with the bird. With one bird down, and only one to go my dad was kind enough to allow us all to go to new mexico and hunt over there, so we all could hunt, and not just him. That trip to get tags is a whole 'nother story filled with near head on collisions, over priced gas, rude store owners, green chillie burros that should never have been eaten, and a truck accident that we happened upon that we all just knew would have a body in it. We didn't have any luck in New Mexico, or fishing for that matter, but it had to have been one of the most fun hunting trips we had all been on. Seth, the bird, and me (gotta represent the local hommies ) The first sight we saw coming around a corner No deaths, but a bunch of beer cans hidden in a sack only a few yards away.

I'll tell you what, just because I'm a nice guy, and I like the way you talk. PM me your adress and I'll let you have this one for a steal at $20. BTW I love that beanie. It's great, not too thick but not too thin, just right for here in Arizona. Over the weekend it was 26 degrees one morning, but I was nice and warm, and lookin' good with it on. Thanks again.

There was a bird shot in NM last year by a friend of my uncles who had three beards. One was just shy of 13" and the other two looked like your second one. That was strange for sure! Good job on another nice bird, Saturday the wind was really bad, and we just started glassing canyons. I guess we should have been out hunting instead.
