Cow elk caliber for kids rifle
apache12 replied to BOWUNTR's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
7mm-08. the Bullet your rifle shoots well. If you'll have the youth carry the rifle I think the Tikka is a great light rifle and the 7mm-08 kicks a bit more than a 243 so it's a nice set up with a light rifle and an easy kick. Short barrel swing too 22 inch . Eurooptics has the tikka t3 on sale for a nice price -
I struggle to find a good place to shoot at 3-5 hundred yards. Seems like I'm always running into people And I only have 15's. For glass. Makes for a lot of walking to check target. Thought I would try a ladder at Ben Avery but hate to waste bullets if a ladder at 200 what really show any nodes

Good stuff. Thanks. Think I'll head of table mesa or maybe up to Dugas turn off. Try to get out butt crack and avoid the wind up there

I like it too. I've been staring at one on Europtics for a month. Too much of a.... to pull the trigger

so I'm not a novice at ladder test, but i believe I should test the initial loads at 200 to 300 yards, and increase load by .3. I have also read some people skip the lower charge weights because they what to find the most accurate charge at a highest velocity for obvious increased performance. If as some suggest the initial powder charge test is around 20 rounds as you go up in increments does anyone recommend cleaning a barrel during this 20 round group? If you start with a clean barrel will there by that big of an effect on the 20th round if you're just looking for the string load? I plan to use the same bullet and seat depth and three different powders. 20 rounds in each powder, to find the powder and charge weight to start with and then go to bullet seat depth. Does that sound like the right plan? I think I'll do this over three days. Open to any suggestions from the more experienced

great responses. thanks. I should have added that this is for my 257 wby. so I suppose .3 increments are not wise. I usually shoot at Ben Avery and only can get 200 yards, then I go to the desert and shoot to 500. it sounds like from what you guys are both saying id be better off getting to the desert and ladder testing at 400 to 500. AZsugerbear, are you saying that i could go 250 or more rounds without cleaning? Maybe I'm cleaning to often. I usually clean my rifles after each trip to the range. I'm all for cleaning less.

Did I spell that right? For a non match shooter how important is this tool? Noticeable improvement? I should say I use a hornady press and dies. So maybe it would help me more as I assume hornady not as good as RCBS. Or Redding

Federal 215 primer super tight in new brass and one real bad
apache12 posted a topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
So I'm using federal magnum primers for the first time and thought I'd do some loads with brand new Weatherby brass. Every primer was super tight to place in brass. Like a two hand squeeze Hornadau primer loader. Which I like. Normally very positive engagement Then one primer in pocket got totally messed up. Is this just new brass and exact specs of fed primer? I updated pics of loaded rounds that I just noticed the primer are a bit squeezed do think I should pull all these? They are new test loads -

Yea I have confirmed with Weatherby in the past that Norma makes their brass and ammo -

They sent new brass? That's nice. Wonder if I should call Weatherby. They'll say call Norma or piss off I suspect -
Kids exchange is a good idea. I don't think I have boots that size but I have certainly thrown them and other clothes out as my boys grew

I've been curious about these Remington's. is the barrrel a #3 contour? Or is it the sporter barrel? Thanks

Moved a few months back and just can't seem to find a spot for the relaid bench I made. It's 6ft long 30 inches deep 3 ft tall. Has a shelf underneath. Sturdy table I will consider trades I'm in Phoenix I removed the press. And the best dang huntin pup in the worlds not included 😄He loves the camera

Found some of these online and bought all they had. I have a total of 2000. They cost me $103 with shipping and hazard fee. Not looking to make a profit so $50 for a 1000. $25 for 500 I'd like to keep 500. Ship on your dime

My favorite pack. Small enough for light day hike and strong enough to hump elk quarters out. Add the scabbard and go hands free. Anyone in need of a pack will be happy with this one

So some of you may remember my previous post over the past three years about this one deer that I've chased for the past three years. I started bow hunting three years ago, and glassed up this one buck in my first season. I thought wow this is easy. Three years later I've had a tone of fun with this buck, but he or his ladies bust me every time. I find him in the same bowl canyon every year. Tons of exit avenues for him and of course same with entry points. Good mix of dense cover and open spots and the dang wind swirls like its at the hand of witches. Over the years Ive set cameras and never seen him in the non rut season, I think he comes off a large mountain a couple miles away. he's is a mule deer. at around 4500 ft. Juniper country. I usually spot and stalk, and I'm getting a lot better but I still suck. I've tried to pattern him so I could ambush him but there are no patterns. There are a couple directions I've seen him come from but its still random. So I'll be out this weekend to look for him, hunt doesn't start in the area until 1/1. I hope he made it through the year. Couple questions. Do most of you think I should stay with the spot and stalk? its more fun. But I think I'd have more success on an ambush. just don't know where to set. Also, I have a few areas in the bowl I like to set up from, one is kinda in the middle and I'm afraid if I go in under dark I'll bust the whole bowl. Any thoughts on coming in grey light and glassing my way into a middle spot vs going in blind in the dark? I can also glass from the higher canyon wall on first light and then make my way in. I really want to get to this middle knoll because there are good cuts for me to work out of in all directions to stalk. but its lower so I lose some advantage there. anyway, just fishing for any tips from experienced hunters. I cant wait to get out again and chase this deer. I hope he make the season

does approaching from top or bottom ever make a big difference? or is wind and cover primary? I think I could deal with just him its the 6 to 9 does he's running with. I think I'd have a better chance if I could hunt him in December during early rut. last couple years by jan he has had a good crew already

Like to get a better look at the rack in the back

Have taken all three of my boys on that hunt. Love it. Great job. Smart to wear orange on that hunt. Lots of anxious kids up there

Can you pull bullets form factory ammo and try to figure their load? I have a buddy in Tucson and he has a new 257 wby. Saw mine last year and liked the shoot I know all rifles shoot differnt but I sent him some loads that work for me and they were less them impressive. Nothing to even work with Then. He bought the cheapest weatherby factory ammo and they shot decent. At least as starting point Looks like 100 grain spittzer bullet and I thought I'd call weatherby and ask what they use for powder Am chasing ghost?
