    Free Float or not?

So I have a few different rifles, Vanguard, Savage 110, Axis, Thompson Center Venture, and Tikka t3. Only the Savage and the Venture has a free floated barrel, and consequently they seem to be the most accurate of all. Maybe I'm answering my own question, but is free floating always superior in accuracy? All the other rifles are accurate, but for example my Vanguard starts to jump around when it heats up, and it's tough to have fun at the range if you have to cool the barrel often. also hard to determine the best load to shoot. Any thoughts? Should I have my other rifles free floated and action bed? Weatherby told me it voids any warranty if I float it.

    Free Float or not?

that would be the best use of my credit card in years. So are there aftermarket stocks that are free float or it is better to just modify the original stock?
  5. Lightly used boots with aquaguard. Not sure if snake proof wouldnt want to say yes and be wrong. Bought fir my son he used on a couple hunts and grew out of them. Lots of life left. Paid over $100 On backpage too for pics
  6. Lighly used Savage axis 223 bolt action with a great condition Burris Fullfield II x9x40 scope. I had the scope back to Burris last year and they put new adjustment knobs on becuase they weren't clicking crisp, now they are perfect and they completely serviced the scope. It's a great little scope. They rifle was broken in right and shoots super accurately. I have another 223 so this one is up for sale or Trade. Great set up for varmit or even javalina, my son smoked a pig with this set last year, dropped it where it stood. Would consider a trade for a shotgun field model, no pump or over under, semi auto 12 or 20 no youth. Or Bow package. 29 draw or better adjustable. I will post pics in a bit $550 OBO In n. phx
  7. I know shot placement and distance of shot are all factors in saying yes or no to bullet caliber, but under 400 yards with good shot placement and a quality bullet, would either of these calibers be enough to safely get the job done? Want to socut this summer for a fall bear thanks

    Looking for a new pack

Eblerlestock Just One. Great quality I know this is two small but I took out a cow in two heavy trips on an Eberlestock X2 with external Frame. Love that little pack
  9. Great now I just need to find one of those critters. that's my summer scouting mission. Looking forward to learning about bear habitat. Seen a few on accident on hother hunts but have a ton to learn, at least I don't have to worry about my rifle
  10. is this the same tripod? want to confirm specs http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=727769&Q=&is=USA&A=details
  11. I'd like to think that I take good care of my rifles,. I clean regularly and store dry and oiled. I dont shoot a lot,ss once a month or so maybe more during season. I recently notices that my 270 and my sons 30-06 have light rust in the grooves. I have brushed them over and over, and used a spray in foam cleaner that sits in the barrel for 30 min and then cleaned again. they both shoot fine. actually my sons 30-06 is unreal accurate. I'm starting to think my 270 isn't grouping that great, but maybe my son is just out shooting me. ha ha. anyway, should I be concerned with this rust? I mean I assume it's rust, it rust in color and only in the grooves and it's light. Any idea on how I can get it out? Just brush and brush and brush some more? Can you pull a brush back through after going from bore to barrel? I was always told to unscrew the brush pull the rod back through and then go bore to crown again. Thanks for any help

    Barrel groove rust

ok I did some reading and it seems like what I have is cooper fouling. But the Gunslick Foam spray I used is supposed to remove that and turn green if there is cooper fouling when wiped out but my patchers were not green at all. any other product
  13. so much about this topic, does need to be broken in, and if so what method do you recommend for a light 243 caliber on a thompson center
  14. ive been looking for a 243 rifle and found one in Rem 700 BDL with a Leupold vxi 3x9x40 for a fair price. crown still nice a blue chamber looks good. guy said has about 700 rounds through over 6 or 7 years, factory loads. I have no idea how long a barrel last and I suppose there's a number of factors, but just based on that info does it seem like it would still have long life? any way to inspect? Thanks
  15. Like new Stevens 200 Rifle in 270 caliber. With camo stock. Black matte barrel. This has less than a box of rounds fired through it and is in perfect condition. Doesn't have the that poor Savage Axis feeling hollow stock. $275 OBO. must sign bill of sale with AZ DL or CCW. 16. so I'm 44 and healthy none smoker but a few weeks back I got back from my Cow Elk hunt (successful solo hunt, sure was great) and started pissing blood, full on red stream stuff. Anyway, to make it quick, after a bunch of test they found a tumor in my bladder. Went last Thursday and they cut it out along with some muscle to test. Met with Doc today and he said muscle is clear (that's good) but like the fine walnut on an high grade Remington CDL i have High Grade cancer that is very aggressive and seems it likes to spread. Point is i start Chemo in four weeks. for 6 weeks cycles and then they look to see if any microscopic spors have spread. Sure be pleased to have any and all prayers for the folks in the site. the bad news is tha my boys 13 and 15 have a Jr Mule Deer hunt together over Thanksgiving. We have been so excited to do this hunt togherher and now i'm not sure i can make it. it's in 18b. if anyone knows an outfitters that knows that area and are open I thought i might talk to them about if I might be able to hire them out a few days. I was thinking I'd could handle camp and I coodk good chow. Anyways, it's propbable silly to even think about, better to heal up and have more hunts with my boys. anyway, I appreciate the prayers.

I got hit with Cancer, reaching out for Prayer

Strange by fun hunt. I've never hunted in a open mesa like that and it took me a day or so to figure out the patterns a bit. It was crazy, the deer were just out in the middle of the mesa feeding like antelope, as a matter of fact i saw antelope and mule deer in my glass at the same time. I thought they'd be down in the smaller finger canyons that came out of the really massive canyons, and they did use those but early am and late pm the were right out in the flats. The smaller bucks, smaller forky and a some small 3x3 would travel with groups of 8 to 12 does. I thought that was wierd for it not being rut, it was like rag horn elk staying with cows. I hunt coues deer more I've never seen that. anyway because it was so wide open we did our best to work the wind and try to close the distance to 300 or 350 but they always just teased us and would stay 500 to 800 yards off. Finally last day or two hard days or hunting with my boys packing food and water for the entire day and not going back to camp unitl dark, I went the higest spot I could find and glassed across a deep part of Pinkey canyon and saw a massive buck, it was just a 3x3 but I think it was an older buck that was strating to regress because his body was huge, his eye guards were 6 to 8 inches and g2 g3 were 20 inches it seems with a real wide spread it was just a beauty. We new that if we shot him we'd have to go all the way around the canyon until we could cross bone him out pack in in a three packs and then we were 2 hrs back to the truck but it was worth it and my 15 year old really stepped up and humped most of the gear for me. My 13 year old hung tough. So anyway we were 800 away but the wind was perfect in our face and we could back off our point and get in a low spot and work all the way to the edge of the canyon. my 13 year old stayed on the glass and radio and kept on eye on the buck and would radio if we spoked him. we crept in slow and got to the edge climbed on to some lava rock to perch and got below the horizon. I ranged him at 225. he had no idea we were there and we sat there and realized just how nice he was and were waiting for him to turn so we could get onto a flat rock and put his pack down for a rest. All of a sudden with no reason we picked his head up and turned 180 and decided it was time to roll. he just started going right back up the ridge his was on, not running be fast walk with a purpose. I got my boy down on the pack and he chambered a rounnd I ranged him a 300 and told him to hurry. he couldnt locate him and I told him to go naked eye and find him. finally at the top of the ridge he was at 411 and still moving. My son let one fly and it hit low right below his feet and he bounced twice and hopped over the top and gone. We felt just sick. he was just a smart old buck that beat us. I've gone over it a hundred times and just can't figure out what I did wrong. did we get to close? Did he wind us anyway even though the wind was in our face? Did he just catch us against the rocks even though we were burried? I have no idea. I'm so bummed. but we had a good hunt and learned a new area. any thoughts on what we did wrong on the big buck? Or just an old wise buck? His image is haunting me and my 13 year old wants to go again this weekend before his tag runs out. My 15 will be in TX. Again, thanks for all the great comments and offers. Much appreaciated!

I got hit with Cancer, reaching out for Prayer

The outreach from folks on this site has knocked me to the ground. I pray that God blesses all of you and reaches out to comfort you with any of the challenges you may be facing in your life. If any of you need or want a brand new pair of Russel outdoor Rain/Cold weather pants.Called Raintamer II. they still have the tag, and were priced over $80 they are just a litte to short and little to big in the waist. They ahve a full lenght zipper, mossy oak infinity pattern. They are really nice quality pants. I'm a 34 waist and I think these would be comfortable to 38 to 40 wasit and I'm 6'1" 34 inseam and they are about two inches short on me. they are size L. They are free to whomever needs them. I'll meet and give them to you ship them to you if that is easier. I can send a pic, but if you google russel outdoors raintamer II you'll find them.

Thanks for all the responsw. Such are great group of folks on this site. I've scouted the west side of the unit a few months back and it's a strange hunt, looks like lope country but found some nice finger canyons that come off burro creek canyon and glassed some young bucks running with big groups of does. I'm sure there's some good bucks. I'm just not the hike into the canyons is in my best interest. I've never been a road hunter but I've got some PM"s about woking the roads west of Camp Wood, and one PM on an outfitter to check with. I'm going to give him a call. Thanks again for the Prayers. Hard to call folks on this site strangers!

  23. Want to buy a pistol/revolver for use in the field while hunting scouting hiking, whatever. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestion. I don't want to spend more than $500 new/used. I most likely wont go out and target shoot the pistol I really want it simply for defense. I want something that is relaiable when it gets wet or dirty while I'm on the ground glassing or moving through brush. And something light. I've thought about the new Ruger LCR snub nose and it actually fits pretty well in my hand, but my concern is the range of accuracy. I like that a revolver is going to be reliabel though. I think a small semi auto will have a little more range but I'd had to have a mal function because it's go dirty on a long hunt or scout trip. anyway, just hoping for some opinions. Thanks
