Thought I’d share this year’s Kaibab buck. I had this hunt two years ago, and felt very blessed to draw the tag again this year. Things started off kind of slow and I wasn’t seeing much in the way of big bucks. There were days that it was difficult to find even a small fork horn, and I was starting to get a little worried. Seeing deer after deer being hauled out in the back of pickups or hanging up in other camps didn’t help the confidence level either. I finally spotted this guy in the edge of some thick brush and dead trees about an hour before dark. I made a 70 yard broadside shot with a “new to me” 257 Wby mag. After the shot I only saw him take a couple of hops before he disappeared into the trees and brush. It took some time to find him by a very thin blood trail, and I was extremely fortunate to have some help to locate him. It was well after dark when we finally found him, and the feeling of relief that rushed over me was beyond words. I am absolutely thrilled with this buck! G&F aged him at 4.5 years old and measures 24in wide. This hunt reminded me that the Kaibab is truly a special place, and I can't wait to return. It was also a reminder to keep hunting even if you aren’t seeing what you want, because you never know what will turn up next. I have to give a huge thanks to Rick, Casey, and Jessica. Without all of your help, this wouldn’t have been possible. Good luck to all of those with the late tags… it ought to be a great year.

Congratulations on a heck of a nice buck Rick! That's got to be very satisfying after waiting so long. Glad to see that your daughter let you borrow "her gun" for your hunt

I shoot the same arrow and vane combination with a QAD HDX rest and have no issues with fletching contact. I position the vanes at 12:00, 4:00, and 8:00 positions. The difference in the two "flippers" are that one of them will have a slightly deeper notch. Which one you use will depend on your bow, (the relation between the arrow shelf and the mounting hole for the rest) Hope that makes sense and helps.

Is the Bell and Carlson stock for a sporter or heavy barrel contour?

Very nicely done Ammon. It's neat to see how those pot calls go together.

Back to the top. I could possibly meet in the Chandler area if that helps anyone.

Are you thinking of Chandler Electric... a little hole in the wall shop off of Chandler Blvd. If the problem is in the cluster, then I would recommend Dick's speedo & tach. They repaired some cracked solder connections and replaced some bulbs on my 2003 GM cluster and haven't had a problem since. I thought they were reasonably priced too.

I recently purchased an AZ ez-fletch mini, and am excited to try my hand at re-fletching some arrows. Since there seems to be several adhesive choices on the market, I wanted to ask some advice on what glue you are using, and also what to use for removing the old fletching glue from the arrow shaft? So far I've been able to strip the old Blazer vanes from the shafts with a stripping tool, but there is still residue of old glue. I will be using Blazer vanes and Gold Tip carbon arrow shafts. Thanks in advance.

I finally had some time to work on this, so I thought I'd share my results. I ended up having to use acetone to remove the old glue. The denatured alcohol wouldn't remove the old glue no matter how much elbow grease was used, (not sure what the old glue was since they were already fletched when I bought them). Gold Tip customer service said that acetone was fine to use on the shaft but not on the nock, so I just removed the nocks for this job. They recommended rinsing the shafts in very hot water afterwards both inside and out. I did use the denatured alcohol after they had dried overnight to clean the surfaces. The AZ ez-fletch jig took a few practice runs before I got good results. The blazer vanes can move length wise in the arms that hold them. I found this out the hard way, but it was my fault for not closing the arms slow enough and forcing the vanes out of position. Probably the toughest thing was judging how much glue to use. It took a couple times before I figured out what was too much or not enough. By the third try I was getting good results, and the ez-fletch mini is really quite easy to use. I ended up using the bohning platinum glue, so we'll see how they hold up. Thank you to all of those who contributed suggestions.

Which sights to put on new shotgun? Factory ones shoot high!
az41mag replied to Viper's topic in Turkeys!
My vote would also be for the Hi-Viz sights. They were a little different to look through at first with the rear sight having a hoop that holds the rear fiber optic pins, but I've gotten used to them now and like them a lot. They're also very bright. Just be careful with the front sight pin if you lean the barrel of your shotgun against a tree while out in the woods. As already stated, they should send you replacement pins if you break one. -
Mouth calls can be a little intimidating at first, but the good news is that you have plenty of time to practice with them (in the car on your commute works well). As already mentioned, get some of the simple cut calls to learn on and practice with them often. One thing I learned from trial and error when I was learning to use diaphragm calls was how important it is for the call to fit properly and seal against the roof of your mouth. Depending on the call, I sometimes have to trim a little of the tape off so that it will seal properly against the roof of my mouth. This will of course vary from person to person depending on the size of your mouth, but just a little tip if you're struggling with them. I would also recommend attending one of Ammon's seminars, as they are very informative. He makes a variety of hand made turkey calls too. Glad you're thinking of this now and not 2 weeks before your hunt.

FS: Outdoorsmans Binocular Adapter w/ two studs and Vortex binocular adapter

PM sent on Outdoorsman adapter. Thanks -
I carry a small sharpening stick in my pack. I use a havalon in combination with a traditional drop point knife which I prefer for skinning. As others have stated the havalons are great knives and not trying to say there's anything wrong with them, but I just prefer a drop point knife for skinning. Anyways this one collapses to about the size of a pen and works great for touching up an edge if needed. I can't remember the maker of this one, but remember picking it up at big 5 a few years ago for like 15 bucks. It's worked well and it doesn't take up much room in the pack.
