  1. If they fly south they're running into that tropical storm out in the gulf that's gonna cut them off in Mexico.

That's a great unit if you know where to look. You'll need a pretty sturdy 4WD rig and some good maps to get around... I haven't seen a whole lot of Coues east of the Whetstones, so I'd rule that area out and focus on getting in on that west side somewhere. That's all I'm gonna put out there- good luck!
  3. take a small head nail, bend it 90 degrees, add a little tiny bit of J&B Qwik to the head of the nail, stick it on the remaining part of the screw and keep it there for about 15mins, then use the 90 degree bend to unscrew the screw. I'd only recommend it if you broke it flush or above the barrel.

    Cheap Mouth Calls

If they have a Lil' Dog I will grab it for you. Maybe I should go to my "Dr.'s Appointment" earlier than lunchtime... hahaha!
  5. Hey, a friend of mine was out thrift shopping and he came across a startling discovery... Primos and Knight and Hale mouth calls at Goodwill in Sierra Vista for $5 a piece. I picked up a Primos 3rd degree, a Raspy Coaxer, and a Still Cottontail call the other day and they have DOZENS left. Has anyone used the Primos mouth calls? I think that 3rd Degree one sounds pretty good, but I'm not a coyote.

    Cheap Mouth Calls

I have the still call, works pretty good. I mostly use the randy anderson stuff, made by primos. I like the raspy coaxer.... has the little squeaker I think when you flip it around. do they have any howlers?? James They had Howlers, mostly the Knight and Hale ones, I think they had a primos or two... would you like me to grab one or two for you? If you have a specific Knight and Hale or Primos Howler you're looking for just tell me which one and I'll try to find it...

seriously... really bothered me that one of my good friends would act like that after the hunt. Now, before I take anyone out, I make sure they know that their birds are THEIR birds. I am more than happy to help clean them, but they aren't coming home in my cooler unless I ask them for the meat.

    Do beards provide camo?

According to the regular military: Beards do not have ANY benefits. That is why I must painfully shed mine every Monday-Friday morning before PT... It's a shame the top brass doesn't realize that our nation's best and most elite Soldiers are in fact enabled by relaxed grooming standards which allow them to grow a beard like a real man only then to go out and dominate the friggen globe.

    Curious, how you do it?

I bought a used 2007 H3 with great rubber, and if I camp out I sleep in a 8x10 dome tent or a Gore Tex Bivy sack under the stars. I do however hunt three states every year... My family is in western NY and I hunt and fish whenever I go back, and my best huntin' buddies are still in Central Texas for ducks and pheasant, and of course I hunt here in AZ so I guess you can put me in that crowd...

    Curious, how you do it?

To save money I usually settle for value-priced gear and make it work. I do admit to having what I consider a normal and manageable amount of debt according to my family budget. Hey, as long as you pay bills on-time and don't exceed your debt/income ratio- it's actually good for your score to exercise the cards a little bit and carry some debt. Here's a list so you don't really have to feel bad about your gear. I shoot an older 2010 Browning (PSE) Verado MT bow. It's slower than the new PSE's but much faster than what the native americans had and they killed bison. My Muzzleloader is an older model CVA Wolf (the one with the non-quick breech plug) my wife bought me one Christmas for $99 at wal mart and topped it with a Cabela's powderhorn scope that was in the bargain cave online for $40. I also bought a .50cal T/C Tree Hawk off of a kid for $75 not too long ago and that has become one of my favorites for open sighted shooting. I shop around online for clearance camo clothes and I'm equipped pretty well with Cabela's Silent Weave and Russell APX gear found in the bargain cave "rock bottom deals" online. My pack is a large green LL Bean internal frame pack I got at a Yard Sale for $6 (yes, six bucks) and cleaned it up. It was already in good shape but I washed it out anyway. Not a single rip or broken buckle at all. You'd be amazed what pops out at you when you're out "yard sailing". My wife and I go once a month and sometimes we see stuff- and sometimes it's just a gas burn. Optics... well, I REALLY wish I could upgrade!!! My cheap old Tasco spotter and my brand new $150 Nikon Trailblazer Bino's are doing just fine for glassing up deer so far. I'm sure I miss animals that a Swaro user could easily see, but if it's THAT hard for me to spot deer that I absolutely need $3000 optics- I'm probably in the wrong spot, and there's something I can do to improve my situation. So, I'll let people call my gear cheapo crap... it's what I have and I'm okay with what it enables me to do outdoors. Do what you can do with what you have. That's life.

    unretreaved animals

That's true- now that I look at it, about the only thing you are qualifying is that the person can stand there and hit a stationary target accurately from a specified range. That would only eliminate the marginal hits and unretrieved game caused by inexperienced and inaccurate SHOOTERS... The poor ethics isn't an accuracy problem... it's a cultural problem. Onto my next part of this... when you hear that somebody hit and didn't follow up or retrieve the animal, what is your reaction? Most people I know would probably say "man, that's too bad" or some other superficial comment then complain as soon as they got away from the guy who wounded the animal. I've tried to get a guy to eat his tag before back in NY. He gut-shot a doe and she ran into private property where the landowner was a S.O.B. and nobody ever wanted to run into him... well, I told the guy to go over there and explain what happened and ask if the animal could be retrieved and he told me "I ain't going over there for a doe"... Well, I told him he'd better call NYSDEC to work it out with the landowner or burn one of his three doe permits and he got all mad and we've never hunted together since and I had him removed from the list of people who had permission to hunt the private parcel I was on. Good riddance. I also have had guys bug me about going duck and dove hunting only to have them at the end of the hunt try to give me all their birds like they're doing me a favor or something... WTF?! CLEAN AND EAT THEM YOURSELF!!! I usually end up in a verbal argument with them too- and I never hunt with them again. I've had some doves that I knocked down disappear on me and I personally just count them towards my limit. That's my ethics, YMMV

Back in NY, I had to take a Bowhunter Education Course, but it did not require qualification. You had to buy a special bowhunting stamp after you had the certificate, too. When I was stationed at Ft Hood- they reqired you to hit an 8" paper plate with three broadhead tipped arrows at 20 and 30 yards each before they'd sign off on your archery license to hunt on-base. On the Lake Georgetown WMA in central TX there is a yearly lottery for permits and they also require that you qualify with your bow before you are allowed to hunt. I don't see the big problem with qualification for any weapon. Arizona is the first place I've been where there literally is no requirement for bowhunters to either get a special stamp or qualify in some form.

    Sitting vs Spot and Stalk

Do you ever shoot at 3D deer targets? Our club down here has a monthly HMABC 3D shoot... I do okay- I shot a 216 in unlimited in July, and in the 240's hunter class for the August shoot. Not a competitive shooter by any means. I also hit the HMABC walk-through range a few times per week, 15 burlap animal targets ranging from 20-60yds with 6" and 8" vital circles. I do pretty good on those. Didn't want to hijack the OP's thread with my lack of archery prowess- so I'll reiterate that I like spot and stalk over sitting in a blind unless I REALLY have a buck patterned and I can't build up some brush to hide behind.
  23. I second that! Those ol' Brownings are just so incredibly classic!

Sighting in my bow, and getting frustrated...

My practice sessions now consist mostly of hitting the walk-through range that the HMABC runs about three to five times per week. It has 15 targets spaced out over a little over a mile of terrain in the foothills of the Huachucas. I practice quietly navigating the trail and approaching the targets, setting my feet or kneeling, drawing slowly, aiming, releasing and follow through. I am only shooting one arrow at each target IF I score a vital hit. If I fail to achieve a vital hit with that first arrow I will nock another one, hit the rangefinder, and re-shoot that target. I move on after each "kill shot" as a way to reward myself. Somebody said it before, "you only get one shot at the animal". I am primarily a hunter, not a competitive shooter, so I'm not really that concerned about having three or five arrows touching each other in the bullseye at 60 yards- nor do I want to replace any more arrows. If I can deliver that first-shot hit on the vitals on all 15 targets (ranging from 20-63yds) I'm a happy camper and consider myself lethal.

Sighting in my bow, and getting frustrated...

Nothing beats good form and repetition of good form. nothing worse than practicing bad form over and over again until it becomes muscle memory... At that point you're screwed until you practice it out of your system. Get a pro, take lessons, and good luck!
