    Opening weekend Flagstaff area

I was up in the northern portion of 7 2 weeks ago and had quite a few coyotes that I saw, and many more that I heard.

    .280 ackely improved dies

I've got a set of the Lee 280 AI dies. They're brand new never used. As far as I understand, they are for the original AI not the Saami spec.

    I Love Vortex!

So last week I saw on the Vortex facebook page that every review left on their site gets an entry into a drawing for a pair of Vortex Viper HD binos, so I left a couple reviews. Well, this morning I got an email from a nice lady at Vortex saying that I won!! Can't beat some free binos!!

    I Love Vortex!

I had a pair of the Viper HD 15x50's before and loved them, I since upgraded to Kaibabs so had no need for them... But if they're free...

    Spotting Scope Help

Very true. Unfortunately I didn't have that luxury. I had to compare in the parking lot at about 5:30pm. I'm sure I'll be happy with my purchase. I can't wait to get it and take it out scouting.

    Spotting Scope Help

I've decided I finally need a spotting scope to get in and verify creatures I glass with my 15's. I am torn between the the 4 different options in the Vortex Viper lineup. The Vortex Viper's are on sale at cameraland right now, but I'm also thinking the Viper HD would be better, just how much? I also can't figure out if it's worth getting the 20-60x80 over the 15-45x65? This will be my first real spotter so I just want to get a good one. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Spotting Scope Help

Well guys, I stopped by sportsmans to compare a couple scopes side by side. After thinking long and hard about it, I decided to go ahead and order the Vortex Razor HD 65mm. I figured you can't really beat it for the money. I tested it side by side with the 50mm, the Viper HD, and the Swaro. To be honest, it was head and shoulders above the Viper HD. In a side by side comparison I couldn't tell an ounce of difference between the Swaro HD 65mm and the Razor HD 65mm. I chose the 65mm over the 50mm for the extra zoom and eyepiece. I felt that the eyepiece in the 65mm (which is the same eyepiece as in the 85mm) was better quality, and I could really use the extra light transmission in the morning and evening that comes with the 65mm. Thanks for the help guys. I will say, the 50mm is an awesome scope. I just need something a bit larger and more powerful.
  15. I got this barrel for a build I was going to do, and while waiting (4 months) for the barrel, I had a change of direction with the project. It's a brand new never fired Shilen stainless match grade barrel chambered in 280 AI in a Varmint contour. This barrel is sweet! $300

    Opening weekend Flagstaff area

I've been scouting unit 7 for the past couple weeks and haven't really seen anything for deer. A couple doe here and there, a couple spikes, but nothing of quality or any quantity.

    Spotting Scope Help

Ok, so I've pretty much settled on the HD version. Now what are the pros and cons of the 80mm objective? I don't mind hauling around the extra 1 lb if it gets me more light or wider field of view.

    Another noob with questions

Oh boy, if you're getting a new rifle I would get the Tikka T3 Lite WITHOUT A DOUBT!! It has the smoothest action of any out of the box rifle you can buy and is deadly accurate. I LOVE MINE!! I've got a custom Savage 111 280 Ackley Improved and shoots lights out. But that's after a lot of upgrades. There's nothing left stock on that gun but the action.

    Need Some Pointers

So I have a tag for unit 7 mule deer and I'm fully aware the good bucks are in the northern portion of the unit in the flats. I just have no idea how to hunt flat terrain like that. Is the best way to climb up the highest hill I can find and just glass the flat ground? Find the thickest areas of trees in the flats and glass that? I'm really at a loss here. I haven't had much luck in the pines, and don't want to deal with the masses that accumulate and hunt around the peaks. I'm heading out scouting again this weekend, so any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

    Spotter or 15's???

15's no doubt. For longer range glassing you'll need them. I find it hard to glass with a spotter. I only use one for counting points and making decisions.

    Another noob with questions

Like was said before, the best way to get to know coues deer is to watch them. Once you glass one up, whether it's a doe or a buck, just watch it for awhile. See what it does, how it acts, where it beds and what it looks like while it's bedded down. Look away for a few minutes then find it again. Helps you to understand what they do and how they move. I found that to be the most beneficial for me when I was just starting out glassing. Another big thing, like said above is getting the best glass you can afford x 2. I started with a pair of $60 bushnell permafocus 10x42 binos and have upgraded every hunt until now I have a pair of Vortex Kaibabs and a pair of Minox 15x58s. I love them. Maybe one day I'll get some Swaros but for now I couldn't be happier. I've got a couple tripods, a slik sprint pro 2 and a culmann magnesit. I prefer the magnesit as it's higher quality and is sturdier, although it is heavier. Both are good and I can recommend them both for around $100. If you have any specific questions about anything on here, let us know and we'll see what we can do to help you out.
