It's bad timing, and maybe a little better planning on their part would be nice. That is what can happen when hunting public, mixed use land. It is a small price to pay for having public land to access. Hopefully they take hunting into account after your email for next year, but the land belongs to everyone, not just hunters.

Kill switch is pretty easy on most things. Or a valve on the fuel line to kill the fuel.
-
Call Randall's and Legendary and see. They seem to have a wide variety of different hard to find stuff.

For your late hunt dont worry to much about scouting early other than to get the lay of the land. Spend as much time up there though as you can the 2 weeks before the season. That will be way more beneficial. Find the water, the food, and travel routes. Get away from the roads, and get some elevation to glass.

I should have worded it better. I know they still have a peaks hunt or 2, but they used to have like 5 or something silly because they were trying to reduce the elk herds up there for awhile. They also lowered the number of tags on the late rifle hunts which will help a little. I like 7E, but the last hunt up there a few years ago was tough, and opportunity was pretty was scarce for us. If they keep the tags lowered and the herds start coming back I might start putting in for it again.

Be prepared to hike. Some of those cones are tall.

The late rifle can be very different than the October hunt. Weather and water have alot to do with what to expect on the December hunt. In December you won't have any bugles to chase. It will be more spot and stalk, ambush, or sit water kind of a hunt. 7E holds elk from top to bottom depending on the weather, water, pressure etc. 7E isn't an easy hunt. In fact it can be quite challenging, so don't expect an easy hunt, especially if the weather sucks. I stopped hunting 7E because the amount of elk seemed to be dropping alot. They have stopped issuing all the peaks tags though and reduced the overall amount of tags so hopefully it will pick back up.

Listen for bugles. Chase the bugles. That time of year I would expect most elk to still be up in the middle to high elevations. I would personally start my hunt up near the base of the peaks and chase bugles. Bugles will lead you to bulls who are still chasing cows.

WTB: New, Unused Game Bags For Elk - CLOSED - GOT SOME
Hoss50 replied to eddielasvegas's topic in Classified Ads
Blackovis.com had some nice bags. I used them last year for my deer and they worked great. I bought the XL size. https://www.blackovis.com/ovis-sacks-lightweight-game-bags -
People have been killing elk with core-lokt ammo for years. Would it be my first choice, no. Will it work with a good shot and shot placement, yes.

See and elk, shoot an elk...that's what my 4 year old would advise. If you can take the time off, take the tag, and get up there asap. Listen for bugles and head toward them, and take the wind into account. If you know how to bugle or cow call try it. A 270 will take an elk without issue with good shot placement. What round is the gun sited in for?

If you are looking for a round in that caliber and power, go for it.

Cameron always has diesel. Then grab it again at the Vermillion cliffs. Next closest diesel to Jacob's is probably Fredonia once you are up there. Fredonia also has a Family dollar, and if you need dry ice hit Kanab.
-
I filled up in Cameron on the way up. Then I stopped off in Fredonia after the first day of hunting when we dumped my buck at the processor. By about day 5 I had to pay the $5 a gallon in Jacob's, but I only put enough in to get back to Cameron on the way home. I did have to get a couple pints of power steering fluid in Jacob's lake on day 2 as the cap on my PS pump went MIA. 1 pint was like $12 or $13 or something crazy. We improvised a cap with some aluminum foil and heavy duty rubber band.

I want to say the new owner of Randall's does hydro dipping. It might be worth a phone call. -
Berger VLDs Let Me Down - Suggestions???
Hoss50 replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
My dad and I had this happen with a cow elk many years ago. At 50 yards he shot her with a 200gr Speer Grand Slam right in the boiler room. She kept going and he hit her again with another good shot. She ran toward me, and I shot her with a 338 win mag shooting 275gr semi-spitzers. My shot was a little far back and that heavy bullet penciled through. She turned around and ran back to my dad and he shot her 2 more times. All 4 of his shots should have stopped her. None of his shots exited. She ran another 75 yards before she piled up. She was still trying to get back up though. We gutted her, and I literally had to cut the top off a coke can and scoop out the liquid that was once her lungs and liver in with the can. This was in unit 8. She was a tough a** cow. I learned a few things that day. Elk are tough as heck, but that 275gr semi-Spitzer was to much bullet unless I planned to shoot shoulders. I also learned adrenaline is a heck of a drug, but I think if we would have let her keep going after the first 2 hits she would have piled up not that far away. She just got caught in a crossfire and the adrenaline kept her on her feet, along with being so close to her. -
Berger VLDs Let Me Down - Suggestions???
Hoss50 replied to rossislider's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
Awesome bull. I dont have experience on bull elk, but have used them on cows with success. Classic hunters have dumped mule deer for me too. I am looking at TTSX in my 300 weatherby though for a lighter bullet I can drive fast. It shot really well with 150gr TTSX. I am trying 168gr TTSX next. The 6.5x55 is going to stay with Berger though, and it will be that it the 300 weatherby on my cow hunt this year. -
All are sold. Please delete. Shot guns / youth rifles

How does the 243 H&R shoot? -
Tikka still makes a 6.5x55 which I am considering for my son. If you want to stay with a true short action though I would look at 7-08 or 6.5 creedmoor. I personally love 6.5x55 so I will probably go that route, but for me 7-08 is still in the running. With a muzzle brake or suppressor recoil will be a non-issue.

need help... never mounted a rail before...maybe gunsmith recommendations
Hoss50 replied to andrewmilich's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
P.S. a rail is a good choice if that is what you want. Get a good rail, and a good set of rings, mount it all correctly, and you will be rock solid. -

He is talking about Lance's personal scopes. They are all crazy high end super clear scopes and will make you feel bad about your own scope. Lance mounted a scope for me awhile back and I learned a few things. I have since bought my own wheeler mounting tools. You can use them if you need them. I am near arrowhead. -
My wife makes it too occasionally. She has rheumatoid arthritis and bone broth and things with good gelatin like broth made with chicken feet, bones, etc is supposed to be very good help reduce inflammation.

Colt has never liked selling ar's to the public. When they do you pay extra the name, not quality. You can buy better ar's for the same price as colt.

Off the top can mean different things too. Last year there were not a lot of deer near the park, but lower in the pines going north were still lot of deer. Near the park they still had standing snow in the shaded areas. Towards Jacob's there was no snow left. It was noticeably warmer near Jacobs then right on the park boundary. Last year we saw deer from the pine trees all the way down to the scrub. Just nothing higher up by the park.
-
Last year it snowed and melted twice before the early hunt. We did not see many deer up high by the canyon park boundaries. Forest service was working that area too and confirmed what we were seeing when we inquired.
