It got here today!!! Now I need to call and get the rings ordered.

I just picked up a CZ 550FS in 6.5x55. It is a full stock Mannlicher style rifle, and I would like to put a good looking and functional piece of glass on it. I want a classic look with modern features. A plain duplex reticle isn't going to cut it. Part of me really wants to put a high gloss Leupold with gold ring on it, but I want a good value, and a scope capable of longer range shooting too. I kind of want the the features of a turret scope to be able to shoot longer range if needed, but don't want big giant turrets. I don't mind a hold over reticle either though, but want to be able to shoot 600 or so if I chose to. My goal with the rifle is deer to 600 yards, elk to 400. My budget is probably $400-600 maybe more for the right scope with the rifle look and features. Thoughts? I want to try and keep a classic look with some more modern features. Harley

Kimber Pro carry 38 Super will be my weapon of choice this year with 124gr XTP handloads. I am headed to 17B. Backup will be my Sig 2022 9mm with 127gr+P+ ammo.

I don't need the QD feature but I like it. I don't really want a rail on this rifle, beside the rail and ring setup I found for it costs more than the QD by about $75. I want to keep the look of the rifle old school. The rail isn't old school.

I am considering a pair of their QD rings for my CZ 550. Does anyone have any experience or feedback on them? Thanks Harley

I finally pulled the trigger on a scope. It will be here next Tuesday. I found an NIB obsolete Leupold VX-6 2x12x42 with Boone & Crockett reticle for a good price I think. It has a CDS ticket so I can dial once I get a load developed too. It really came down to this VX-6, a VX-5HD, and the NightForce SHV 3-10. This is the most I have ever spent on a scope, but I am really trying to work on improving my optics across the board. It's not a Kahles or S&B but it will be better then anything I have known before. This one had a better power range and the BDC reticle which I like for quick shots, and then the CDS when you have time to dial. Now I am debating rings.... Then I might be able to actually shoot this thing for real. Harley

I was there yesterday too, but I was on at 18 when this happened.

I took these to the range today too. I didn't do a true group test, I just needed to get the scope set for these loads for these javelina hunt soon. I got it dialed and was hitting the 200yrd gongs with ease. I will group test them next time.

Has anyone loaded for it, and have advice or good loads/powders? I am planning to load the 123gr. HorNady SST in Lapua cases. My cz527 shoots the Hornady steel case ammo with this bullet pretty well so I thought about trying to load it since I have some Lapua cases already. Thanks Harley

I went to the range today and ran the new loads. I used lil' gun ranging from 12.1 gr to 13.3gr. From the feel test these loads have some oomph. I don't have a crono so I don't know for sure. My gun is a 4.25" commander length 1911 with steel frame. It seemed the loads in the 12.7 range were the best compromise on speed, recoil, and powder burn. The highest loads got pretty dirty with alot of unburned powder. I had one pop off the extractor too, so I am going to keep the loads a little more tame. The cases didn't show signs of pressure.

Does anyone have any good loads for 38 super? I am looking to shoot 124gr XTP bullets at factory or faster velocity. The gun is a Kimber 4.25" pro-carry with steel frame and fully supported chamber. All stock, no comp. I am planning to shoot this gun on my HAM javelina hunt next month.
-
My first loads are in the box, now I need to get to the range and test them out. My javelina hunt that I plan to use this rifle on is in about a month. I can't wait! Lapua brass RL7 Powder WLR primer Hornady 123gr SST

My dad and his buddies went deer hunting as often as they could get drawn. They were more about drinking beer than hunting it seemed like, and they were not serious hunters. After my dad and his buddies group of friends grew apart we started hunting with just me and him. We were more about the hunting but still didn't know much about hunting. Hiking those hills when I was young and hunting is what got me to love it. I am trying to get better now that I know better, and I now have my own kids I am going to try and do what my dad did for me plus be better at the actual hunting part. I love my dad and I wish he was still capable of being in the woods with me so he could enjoy it with my kids. My 5 year old went dove hunting with me for the first time this year, and he is probably going javelina hunting for the first time with me this year.

They are "volunteers". They actually do like to help which is cool.

He is old enough for slave labor! My 5 year old helped me mount the vise and reloading press on the workbench this afternoon. I started arranging my reloading area, and the started the slow process of reloading 38 super on a single stage press. He is sizing and decapping, and I am cleaning primer pockets. We switch occasionally, and he seems to be enjoying it sofar.

Thank you. I am looking for a bdc reticle. Thanks though.
-
Standard duplex reticle in the blued scope? Is the spotter prett clear?
-
If you have got a round that is sub MOA in a hunting rifle you are doing pretty good. Without a tight tolerance gun chasing things like neck turning seems to probably be way far down the list of things to chase.
-
I sized my Nosler brass before use. Just a quick run through the sizer and they were good to load. No reason not to take a couple min to run through the sizer die.

Any buck, even a "dink" buck is a good buck especially if it is your first. Congrats on getting it done.

1911 in .38 super is what I am going to take on my first HAM hunt this year. 124gr hornady XTP is what I am going to try.
-
I enslaved, er I mean recruited more help. I am now loading 7.62x39 for my rifle javelina hunt. The 5yr old is cleaning primer pockets, and the 2yr is helping me size and decap.

I had a 16ga 870 express about 15 years ago that did the same thing. They had me send it back and polished the chamber. It helped, but still needed to break in.

I am not to concerned about it for javelina, but I normally carry this same pistol on most of my big game hunts as a close range weapon and defense weapon if necessary. I want to get a nice load that has some oomph to it. I know that getting a round up in the 1300 FPS range shouldn't be hard, but I want to make sure I am using a good combination and do it safely. I have found some info on Lil' Gun that I am going to use. I am going to start around 12.5gr and work up and see where it goes with pressure, accuracy, and recoil. I am seeing info that 14.0gr should be roughly the max load. I am just looking to get a little more oomph than factory ammo will provide without having to pay the price for Underwood or Buffalo Bore or something expensive.

I looked at a bunch of the Comp stuff, but during the readings I also found them saying a lot that it matter if the gun was compensated or standard barrel. The compensated guys appear to be willing to shoot heavier loads with less pressure issues. I think I am going to try some load work ups with Lil' Gun and HS6 since I have both in my powder supply right now. Worse case scenario I go buy a box of Winchester Silvertip HP's and go after slaying a piggy. I know they shoot well in my gun, but I was hoping to get a load with a little more oomph just for fun. 1250FPS from a 5" gun isn't great, especially since I have a 4.25" gun.
