I have a cow elk hunt in december and the area where I am likely to camp and hopefully skin a few elk this year doesn't have real trees to try and hang from. Does anyone have a good method or idea how to hang an elk in the open? Last year we cleaned 2 of ours on the deck of a flatbed trailer with tarps on the deck. This year we won't have that option. I want to avoid ground cleaning if possible. The only thing I can think of is to try and build something to put in a receiver hitch on my truck. Thoughts?

Factory Ruger rings. It is just odd because I didn't touch anything on the rifle beside cleaning it. I know cleaning only wouldn't do this but it was the only variable that changed. I am going to check the scope and go from there.

About 40 now in total

A Fun Little Gun Followed Me Home

Here is 10 shots at 100 yards with this little rifle. Open sights off bags with lapua 123gr fmj. It think the accuracy potential is very good. The picture is sideways. The far left shot is actually the highest shot and was also the first shot. The other 9 holes are shots 2-10. Harley -
On my cow hunt last year I got my cow opening day in the afternoon when it was very windy. Steady 15mph probably. I didn't expect to see anything but we found them in the mouth of a wind protected canyon eating. Just make sure the wind is in your favor. Good luck everyone. Leave a couple cows for my group. We have the late hunt this year again.

With that much hail I would almost guarantee that most every roof and anything in the open like ac units, cars, etc are destroyed. I feel for all those affected. It sucks. The hail storm phoenix had about 6 years ago doesn't even look nearly as bad as that. The phoenix storm ruined tons of stuff. At my parents house the roof, large metal patio, ac unit, and any south facing windows were trashed. It killed 1 20' pine tree and scalped another 40' tree. I was lucky as I was working in mesa at the time. My truck didn't get golf balled, and my house in peoria was not.as bad as.what central phoenix got. I remember sitting under that patio when. I was a kid watching what I thought were heavy hail storms. It never once left a dent. That storm golf balled that patio. With the size and volume of hail in safford I would be willing to be it is much worse.

How long do these things take to throw a charge of say 60gr of power?

50BMG. Or anything you can hit with 243 and above at reasonable range for the cartridge. 257 weatherby with 115gr bullet took my cow elk last year with zero problem. 260 yards. Harley

700 out the door roughly I think. -
Is it possible and even worth it to try and flute a factory heavy barrel? Would the weight savings be noticable? I have a Savage 110FP that I am thinking about trying to hunt with but it has the big heavy factory barrel. Or should I just man up and tote around the extra weight? Harley

I have a bunch of 22-250 brass and would like to see if someone has some 300 win mag brass to trade for it. Remington head stamp preferred on the 300 brass.
-
You already have a 22-250 so it sounds like you are set. A medium to heavy weight 22-250 wont have much kick.

heck, nothing I have likes Winchester dove loads, not even the Winchester I have.

Very nice. That bull is almost wider than your truck. Super sweet. What round, bullet, and distance was that shot? Was there a dude name Clint in your hunting group there? Harley

I remember doing it when I was a teen. They really did a good job and helped me realize I was flinching when I shot. Alot of hunters are not nearly as knowledgeable or dedicated as people on here.
-
Very sorry to hear about this. Most of these are preventable sadly. A co-worker has a friend of hers die about a month ago as well on a utv. She had a teenage son she left behind from what I gather. Very sad. Seat belts are key to helping you survive a wreck. A good friend on mines father in law died in his jeep awhile back from the same thing. He had been playing near the lake on a hill. He had do it 6-7 times wit no problem. He jumped in for 1 last lap with a buddy and didn't put his seat belt on. That was the last thing he ever did.

I would use that 77gr load and work with COAL. Try 200gr and try 168gr and see if either direction shows better consistency. Harley

Does anyone know of a tall heavy duty hiking pole that could also double as a standing shooting rest? I want something I can use to stabilize a rifle while I shoot standing but is also good hiking pole. I don't need an actual rifle rest, just something tall to rest my haND on so I can put the rifle on my wrist. Basically an ogre size hiking pole. I'm 6'4" tall and 300lbs so it needs to be tough. Anyone have any ideas?
-
That is a good idea too. I have been thinking about making my own Moses stick as I just don't think the Primos stuff is up to real use as a trekking/walking pole. I have looked at that stuff already. I am not paying $190 for a metal stick from the outdoorsman either. I would go to a metal yard and figure out how to fab my own before I paid that kind of money for 1.

I love Western Drug because it is what America is all about. You can by a tooth brush and a 45acp all in 1 stop. There is enough of everything so anyone can stay entertained for awhile while the rest of the family does their thing. I don't really like Cabela's or Bass pro. They both suck, Cabelas just sucks less. I spent my money at Randalls or Sportsmans warehouse. I wish we had a Scheel's here. They had one in North Dakota when I was there years ago and it was way better then both Cabela's or Bass Pro.

Project Medium Range Big Game Hammer
Hoss50 replied to Hoss50's topic in Rifles, Reloading and Gunsmithing
I know they will both shoot well. The savage especially. It has a bargin Simmons 6-18x40 scope on it and it shot 5 remington 180gr corelokts under 1" at 100. I pulled out 50 cases for the 300 win mag last night to start case prep. I am going to send it to get a muzzle brake soon, and probably put a Vortex HS-LR 6x24x50 FFP on it. Harley -
So we have been 3 weekends in a row now. The 4 year old said he wanted to do the BIG mountain last weekend. I told him it was long, but he insisted. I switched my badlands backpack for a kid toter and carried the 30lb 1 year old and extra water. The 4 year old did great on the hike to the top other than he kept asking how much farther. We got to the top and took his picture next to the American flag and we had a snack. On the way down though the length of the trail started getting to him. On the walk back next to 5th Ave next to the mountain he wanted to give up and was pretty whinney. We had a pep talk and we powered to the end. We were both pretty spent at the end but I didn't let him know how toast I was. He did great overall, but we will save that trail til later when. He is in even better shape. Harley

If you are ever in the phoenix area let me know. I wold be willing to go $200 on it. I don't need it but if you will let it go for that and are close by I wouldn't pass up the deal. Pm me if you need my phone number. Harley

I am just starting to work with them. I put some 162gr in some 7x57 cases last night and have some 175gr going in the 7 Rem mag soon. I will probably get some of the 30 caliber flavor soon too for my buddies 3006 and a 300 for me. I hope to put an ELD-x or a berger VLD in a cow elk in a couple months. Harley
-
Has anyone used the new Hornady eld-x on game yet? I am thinking about using them on an upcoming cow elk hunt but have not seen much feedback on how they perform on deer and elk. I will probably be shooting the 7mm in either the 175gr or 162gr. 7mm Rem mag and or 7x57 mauser. Thanks Harley
