    Unit 8

Get away from the roads. Even when I hunted 8 over 15 years ago people road hunt the heck out of that unit.

    Couple questions

Yep. I do it all the time alot of semi auto rifles flat spot cases like that. Like lance said, even size new brass. I made that mistake one time and the brand new cases would not hold bullets. They had no neck tension because they were slightly to large.
  7. I switched from my full choke to modifed and I did much better. I have never hunted dove with less than modified though. I don't get a ton of close shots where I hunt though.
  8. I am not even that old and I am tired of hard hitting magnums and am working toward lighter classic calibers. I have my dad's 6.5x55 mauser that was sporterized by Kimber in the 80's. Light, handy, and shoots well. I also just picked up a Ruger M77 in 7x57 Mauser to work on getting into hunt shape. Both are classic and great rounds that are efficient butt don't kill the shooter on recoil and in the right rifle they don't kill your back either. I love my 257 weatherby, but I wish they would make a 130-140gr bullet for it. I don't hot load it though so it is more of a 25-06. Harley

    Roughest Road Ever?

Road 419 in 7E. It is shown as a "dirt road suitable for passenger car". Bull____. If you take your car down that road I would be happy to sit at the other end waiting to hand you 30 cold beers. That road sucked last year. I took a double cab Dodge longbed down it. I have a 6 speed with granny low and I was in first gear low range at several points. I am no stranger to rough roads. I have rock crawled for 15 years, and I have been on "rock crawling" trails that were way easier. I almost turned around several times, but I thought to myself it can't be any worse and I have to be getting close to the end. I wasn't. In a SxS or quad it may not be all the bad because you could bypass a lot of the crap, but in a truck that is 22' long you don't have quite the turning radius and ability to bypass things. Harley

    Verde Valley meat processing

Last year for my elk hunt it was between Casey's in Flagstaff and Carl's customach meats in Camp Verde. I eneed up at Casey's but I heard good things about Carl's. That is where I would go if i had a hunt near camp verde
  11. I love 6.5x55 and think it is a great round too. They have developed alot of new rounds that don't do much if anything better than the Swedish 6.5 has been doing for over 100 years. They sell because they are new and trendy.
  12. It was slow today for us too. I didn't shoot horrible, but not good either. I brought down 7.5 total and probably about 20-25 for the whole group of 5 who went out today. It was still better than nothing though! I probably need to find a new spot or buy my way onto one of these dairies or feed lots.

    Where am I?

So I am the a$$ picture winner. Wahoo!!!
  14. My spot is pretty far out so I don't often get people who come in when we are.there, and once they see someone at the tank they leave. Same if someone beats me too the tank, I leave. This year was the first year I have ever had anyone just pull up and start hunting with us already there. I wasn't real happy to say the least. I kept my cool even though I was annoyed as heck. I am glad I did, I finally ran into the guy and he was very nice and we worked together to get some birds. His name was Ron and he is a hunter safety instructor. Nice guy and just as bad a shot as the rest of us so we had a good time.

    Where am I?

I was going to.say hells gate west of Lake pleasant.
  16. If you want factory ammo available .25-06 would be my choice.
  17. Great looking rifle. Good choice on the quarter bore. I love mine. I shot my cow elk last year with my 257 Weatherby and 115gr Berger HVLD's. 2 shots, and I didn't need the 2nd shot, I just wasn't sure I even hit her on the first shot. They did the job just fine. 260yrd shot on #1, 280yrd on shot 2. Both would/wear kill shots. She piled up about 20 yards from being hit on shot #2. My handloads are not pumped up so they probably aren't much higher velocity than a 25-06. I wouldn't use the 25-06 as my first choice on a bull elk hunt, but I wouldn't count it out either. Just limit ranges to something realistic.
  18. 6.5-06. Bolt face is already setup for the right size case and action length.
  19. Hi, I am kind of in the market for an original Browning A5 in 16 gauge and wanted to find out what the real world price should be for what I am after. I am looking for something in field grade shape. Something nice, Not perfect, but not beat. I want to take it dove hunting and use it. Outdoorsman had one but it was in fair shape at best with a lot of small rust pits for $600. Cabela's has one in what I would call field shape for $1000. Are these prices in line or on the high side? They seem a little on the high side, but I thought someone here might be able to shed some light on the real world pricing. Thanks Harley
  20. I need to practice more to be effective with the full choke. I used to do fine with it when I shot alot of shotgun sports. Not so much anymore. I used to get teased at the skeet and sporting clays range because I always called for the bird with my gun down. I always told them, how often is your gun on your cheek ready to go when the dove fly in....
  21. 2 birds with 26 shells isnt anything to brag about.
  22. I shot to many times but I got a limit. I didn't realize for awhile I was shooting my full choke tube though. Once the mod choke came back I did better.

    Hunting Rig

You need a semi float or full float 14 bolt for the back. Get a 10 bolt front if you solid axle swap it. Just as strong as a 44 and factory parts are more common and cheaper. I have my beat up 85 K5 that I am going to rehab for a hunting rig. It already has a 14 bolt rear with Detroit locker and a 10 bolt front with chromo axles and a locker too.

    Hunting Rig

It has a 700R4/4l60E transmission and a 10 bolt rearend. Stranded proof is impossible. Not to mention IFS frontend. Build it so everything is in good shape and keep up good maintenance. That is the best you can do. Good tires and at minimum of 1 full size spare, tools, fluids, etc. I love old chevy's though. Do it right and it should treat you right.
