" I was thinking Lew Early but he was too young". Lew Early won a world championship in the 60's. Not sure if it was a hunting contest or a calling contest. The instructions that came with Circe calls had his name listed (as well as many others noted in this thread). Lew was a client of my fathers during that time period. At my fathers request, Lew let loose with a calling sequence in my dad's office. Dear old dad was impressed.

Takes a whole lot of ammo down the pipe to wear out a properly maintained pistol barrel chambered for a straight walled cartridge. 41 mag ammo is pricy, doubt many 41's out there have been "shot out".

My father used an accountant that had an office in the midrise building that housed the Phoenix Playboy club. Whenever I ran paper to the accountant for my father I'd ride the elevator up to the club. One or two bunnies would greet at the opening of the elevator. I was obviously underage but they would humor me for a minute or two. Good times.

Do not recall whether or not Sam himself wrote any articles but do remember reading about his technique. Sam advocated calling softly, expecially the first few sequences IIRC. Beyond that, don't remember much. Calling in the 50's had to be insane.

Gotta be Sam Dudley. I was thinking Lew Early but he was too young.

A friend has two or three boxes of branded 300 Weatherby ammo from the late 60's. Sticker reads $8.99 per box from Macy's New York of all places. Late 80's we were buying Chinese .223 for $.05 per round. It was junk but went boom reliably.

Old time carpenter likely used it to blow sawdust out of crevices while performing his trade.

See highlighted text ^^^ You will want to pursue this option as quickly as possible. Shady taxidermists use the "I'll refund your money blah, blah" line often. Let us know how you make out. I'd out him if he does not keep his word.

Very nice buck. Well earned. Congrats to you.

Bird law in this country—it's not governed by reason.

Unless you are a card carrying member of a native american tribe, posession of raptor feathers, bones, talons is a no-no. It is federal law. -

Study the main drainages in your unit. Pay close attention to finger canyons that feed the main drainages. Find the roughest, most inaccessible, thick & nasty canyons available. Scour said canyons with your optics and be patient. That's where the bachelor bull groups will be hanging.

Your equipment is up to the task. Consider going to a bow shop and shooting a few arrows through their chrono. Shoot a few with 100 gr. and 125 gr points to see how much velocity is lost with the heavier field points. They might charge a small fee. You will be able to calculate your KE. Knowing what KE you & your rig are generating will allow you to choose a suitable broadhead. I shoot fixed two blade heads and they are an excellent choice for ensuring penetration. All things being equal, fixed two blade heads will not leave as much trailing blood as expandables or 3-4 blade heads. On a solid hit, not a big deal but a marginal hit, it does become an issue. Modern bows store a lot of energy, you may find that a two blade is not necessary.

24" draw length is less than most. I am curious as to how you measure you draw length. How tall are you?

Easy to get faked out, worked at a large facility in the vicinity of Papago Buttes. Five or six years ago, a security camera caught video of what appeared to be a mountain lion moving through it's FOV. Many people viewed the video and we were all convinced it was the real deal. Fortunately, we had a number of photography buffs who spent some time analyzing the video. Using image scale relative to background objects it was proven that the cat was just another tabby. The cat in the video posted in this thread is much easier to identify IMO. The cat itself looks domestic and the pavers on the driveway give a visual reference as to it's size.

Looks like a house cat to me.

Nice story. Congrats to both of you.

Frustrated newbie seeking advice
Swivelhead replied to Calebwalter's topic in Rifle hunting for Coues Deer
Yes, finding beds and droppings is always good. As hot/dry as it has been deer pellets will be hard as a rock in a day. Tracks last a long time in dry conditions. Without rain or wind to degrade the sharpness of a track it can be a tough call. Use your own footprints as a gauge for what a smoking fresh track looks like. Many animals nipple/chomp on prickly pear fruit and pads. Deer, not so much. Primary diet of deer is mast, forbs and browse not grass. I applaud your commitment to scouting and learning. -
Frustrated newbie seeking advice

Nice to see deer but at this point it is more important to find where they are living, what they are eating, etc. Check water sources. Recent sign on the ground will reveal their precense. Then you get to practice your glassing technique. Good info on how to glass has been posted to your thread. Get comfortable when setting up to glass. Glassing, done properly requires intense concentration and can be mentally fatiguing especially when grinding along without producing any "fruit". Keep at it, all your techniques will improve. -
Love it! Three generations on hand, clean kill = As good as it gets!

Beautiful. Hope it's really difficult to access and a well kept secret.
