Archery only hunts are any antlered deer. Go ahead and target muleys but take a coues buck if an opportunity presents itself. Doing so will boost your confidence in your equipment and woodsmanship. Coues deer are especially tasty too. Any quiet camo will work, personally I think Natural Gear is a great pattern. Carhardt are noisy until well broken in. Welcome to the site and good luck.

Packing in 5-10 miles will be a great adventure. I'd recommend you prepare for packing out a heavy load very quickly. September temperatures are unforgiving with respect to table fare.

Small egg sinker w/ split shot; 18" leader to a #6 or #8 hook. Worm, small marshmallow and a salmon egg or two. Our family referred to it as "the cocktail". Lay the salmon eggs & marshmallows on a rock in the sun to firm up a little. Worm goes on the hook 1st, marshmallow 2nd, a couple salmon eggs to finish the cocktail. Works really well when the weeds are bad. The semi stiff marshmallow provides flotation. Toss the cocktail out, let it sink to the bottom, take up excessive slack but DON'T move the bait (avoid pulling it into the weeds). Good luck on your trip.

Did you read post #5? LOL

Another vote for Helly Hansen. They make them in camo. Xtra Tough rubber boots, very comfortable. Synthetic or wool layers underneath. Have fun!

I'd be in favor of AZGF starting large scale breeding program at Houserock ......

Outstanding! Taking an animal out of it's bed with a bow is as good as it gets. Really enjoyed the video. Congrats to all. -
New Mexico draw results out 2 weeks early!
Swivelhead replied to Couestracker's topic in Coues Deer Hunting in New Mexico
No luck with this years NM draw. Love their draw system. Especially group applications utilizing attach codes. Don't need to see a friends personal info as in SSN# (nor he see mine). Don't have to float $$$ for other members of the group, etc. I'm thinking knuckle dragging cavemen designed AZG&F's online system. -

Glad they got caught. -
Cabelas is slow to post charges. You can however call them to check if their is an authorization that has not yet posted. Also, look at your available balance vs. current charges, simple math can show authorizations that have not yet posted. My NM elk app has not posted but the funds are missing from my available balance. Called Cabela's Visa to confirm and there is an authorization from NM that has not posted to the account.

Congrats to all soon to be tag holders. Green with envy.

Should be a mega spawn. Lord willing, we'll keep getting decent winter precipitation for the long haul.

23 is a tough unit. It is an easier NR draw than most. There is a reason for that.

Info on binoviewers: https://www.cloudynights.com/topic/553479-do-binoviewers-reduce-exit-pupil-size/ If you so choose, you can read about binoviewers till your eyes bleed on this site. A while back I had considered purchasing 4 or 5" refractor for use with a binoviewer. Utilizing astronomy equipment would yield a ton of options as to magnification and FOV....... but there is no way astronomy gear will hold up to the pounding outdoorsman tend to give optics. Also, most astronomy gear is not sealed/nitrogen purged so there is the fogging issue. Swarovski BTX is truly groundbreaking. Made for us. Unfortunately, it is out of my price range.

Binoviewers have been around a long time. Till now, primarily utilized by astronomers. No doubt, Swarovski will produce a robust unit suitable for use by the outdoor crowd. Swarovski's decision to produce the BTX is a breakthrough. The purpose of my post is to make potential users aware that a binocular eyepiece reduces light transmission of a given objective size to 50% for each eye. Additional light transmission is lost "splitting the image". This issue is hotly debated among astronomers. The astro folks agree that due to what they call binocular amplification, the brain will see approximately 70% image brightness of a single eyepiece. I did some calculations based on the 70% value stated by the astronomy crowd. A 95mm BTX rig should be the equivalent of a 78mm true binocular. At 35X and Swaro quality, it ought to be amazing. I believe the 1.7X Barlow could be an issue in low light. Did not do the calcs for the 65mm or the 85mm. Doubt the 65mm is a candidate for low light work with the BTX eyepiece. IMO, Swaro hit a homer but the larger objectives (85/95) will be necessary to fully take advantage of the BTX eyepiece.

Don't use them myself but enjoy viewing photos people post from captures on their trail cams.
