Seeking Predator Calling Tips
Swivelhead replied to Santana Outdoors's topic in Santana Outdoors Blog
Good info all. I firmly believe that a quiet approach to a stand is paramount. Whether walking or using a vehicle, for me, a "sound barrier" is critical. A ridge between you or your vehicle and the intended calling area covers a lot of sins. Once across a sound barrier, I move quietly (slow) as my calling area is now exposed to any movement or sounds from me or my equipment. Try not to move too far before sitting down. Give it a couple minutes to let things settle and then begin calling When on stand, if things feel right and the wind stays favorable, no reason not to stay 20-30 minutes depending on what kind a predators frequent the area. Another trick is to stop calling after 10 minutes and wait another 5 or 10 to see if a curious predator will expose itself. Good luck! -
Happy b-day. This is a great site, thx Amanda

Gov. shoots down forest travel management plan
Swivelhead replied to BigMoqui's topic in The Campfire
You are probably right but.......... I try not to break our nations laws. I'll try and abide by the TMP's of our various forests even though I believe they are mean spirited and arbitrary. Especially the 30' rule, I've got a problem with the haters that came up with that rule. Retrieving elk meat in the September hunt is another issue. Also, many old timers likely will never see some of their old haunts with the new/ongoing closures. GRRRRR -
Gov. shoots down forest travel management plan
Swivelhead replied to BigMoqui's topic in The Campfire
AZ is covered up in designated Wilderness, use it. For decades, access to public land has steadily been limited by the feds. Bit by bit, piece by piece, a road here & there. This new state law does not mean much. Feds will still enforce their TMP. Feds are all about control. They'll be waiting to pick our pockets. -
Yawn.........

Float! Easy and inexpensive to do. Own a M70 in .375 H&H that was finicky with a float job but my other rifles responded well immediately when bedded and floated. A previous post mentioned bedding slightly beyond the recoil lug which I normally do. The M70 shot best when floated at the lug. Have fun!

Premium Hunt: Early archery bull without cow hunters traipsing through the woods on their semi-annual cow hunt. I don't have a problem with the premium tag pricing structure. It's not like you'd be paying it every year. I've got 21 points for lope, do you really think I care how much the tag is going to eventually cost? G&F rates have been steady for many years. Dollar is not worth much, G&F needs more money. Wildlife is the property of the state, don't you think we should get top dollar for our wildlife? We are lucky the tags are a lottery and not sealed bid. Ante up!

Last few days of April (during the turkey hunt) I drove down to ten of diamonds. FWIW, talked to two guys who claimed to have fished the Black for two days and caught zilch.

What is the latest in spring has anybody called in a gobbler
Swivelhead replied to couesdeerhntr's topic in Turkeys!
Daily activity. Knowing where the birds are and what they are doing. It's easier to call a bird in if your calling location is where he's going anyway. Often I end up ambushing birds late in the season. Seeps, hidden water are prime loafing locations. I've had a number of lone gobblers light up while loafing near seeps, etc. -

Swivelhead replied to couesdeerhntr's topic in Turkeys!
I've had good success calling in gobblers late in the season. Late in the season, it's 90% knowing the birds you're hunting and about 10% calling. JMO -
it is legal to shoot turkeys on the SC rez with a rifle. Good to know.

My brother has a Goulds tag for 31 starting the 26th of this month. Hoping to drop off a nice gobbler at an area taxidermist on our way the 2nd San Carlos season. Hope to find a good bird taxidermist n the Safford / Globe area.

Not trying to rain on your parade but I'm 99% sure you not supposed to take turkeys on the San Carlos with a rifle. Personally. I don't have a problem with it but rifles are thought to be a safety issue. Congrats on some real nice birds.
