    Volunteering

Come up and spend a weekend in the cool country of the White Mountains volunteering. http://forums.coueswhitetail.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=33014 The AES also has the annual Wapiti Weekend youth camp the next weekend at AZGFD Sipe White Mountain Wildlife Area. We take 100+ kids through courses designed to introduce them to hunting, fishing, shooting and conservation. Always looking for volunteers for that camp too. By the way camp is full so we can't take anymore kids. We would love to have more youth camps if volunteers will step up and help. We have lots of kids that would like to learn about hunting and the outdoors. I wish that more people would step up and volunteer for habitat projects but my first love is for the kids. People need to get past the issues and politics and focus on the positives of teaching youth about the heritage that we enjoy. There are thousands of kids out there that would love the opportunity to learn about hunting, fishing, camping, outdoors and conservation but we don't have the volunteers to put on more camps. If you are interested in getting on a list to learn about volunteer opportunities go to www.arizonaelksociety.org and sign up for the email newsletter. When you sign up you can check the box to be on a volunteer list for info. Also you can join the AES facebook page and get info from there. There are many ways to get involved you just need to take the time. Steve

    Volunteering

If you really have the desire then the issue of politics should not be an excuse to not get involved. It should just limit your involvement to pursuing positive results. Here are a couple of pictures from parents and leaders that took the time to get kids involved in the Arizona Elk Society work project last weekend. They didn't have a care in the world about politics. About half the kids from Troop 14 had never been to the woods or camped. If you ask any conservationist how they got started in conservation they will tell you "Somebody took me outside". Take em outside and get them started young. Steve

AES WORK PROJECT MAY 19-20 UNIT 7W

Our work projects are collaborative partnerships with the AZGFD and the Forest Service. Yes there is the liability issue, also the FS has the final say on the use of chain saws. These trees are very small and close to the ground. There is no need for a chain saw. It is very dangerous for the user to be either bending over or on there kness working near the ground. We have tried to reason with the FS and if they did give us permission they would require $$$s worth of safety gear. We are working with them to get some of our volunteers certified for chainsaw use for other projects involving larger trees. The interesting argument we keep using is that we could go and buy a wood cutting permit for 5 cords of wood and go out and use a chainsaw without supervision and equipment but we are not allowed to use one on the projects. Again their argument is the partnership creates regulations. This project is one that we try to invite kids and families to be a part of. It would not be safe with the kids around and wood chips flying everywhere. Steve
  15. May 19-20 in Unit 7W the Arizona Elk Society is planning our next work project. This one is family friendly with lots of work for everyone. Help us cut and lop juniper and jack pines to restore historic grasslands and open travel corridors for elk, antelope and deer. As usual the AES will be providing food and refreshments for the whole weekend so you don't need to pack the grill. Check out the flyer for more info and don't' forget to sign up. We could use 75-100 volunteers for this project. Project Flyer Thanks Steve

    AES/NWTF Youth Turkey Camp 2012

Last weekend was our third annual partnership Youth Turkey Camp and it was a resounding success. The Arizona Elk Society takes cares of camp logistics and the NWTF takes care of rounding up the mentors to take the kids hunting. This year we had some great support from PVCI, AFC and Hunt of a Lifetime. We had over 60 kids hunting and about 21 other kids in camp. The AES sets up an archery course to teach the kids about bowhunting, the Arizona Flycasters were there teaching kids about flyfishing. Seminars are held each day to teach kids about turkey hunting and predator calling. Brenda Valentine visited camp and took a young hunter out for a hunt. Check out these blogs for articles written about this years camps: Arizona Wanderings Brenda Valentines Blog There are many ways to "Get Invovled" Steve

    AES/NWTF Youth Turkey Camp 2012

HAHWG: Last weekend HAHWG volunteers and HAHWG organizations pulled off three simultaneous turkey camps during the juniors only turkey season. It was awesome. • An estimated 200 junior hunters participated at the three events. • The events drew more than 500 total attendees. • Partners in the three events: Arizona Chapter National Wild Turkey Federation, Mingus Mountain Longbeards Chapter National Wild Turkey Federation, Outdoor Experience 4 All, Xtreme Predator Callers, Arizona Bowhunters Association, Arizona Sportsmen for Wildlife Conservation, Arizona Elk Society, Phoenix Varmint Callers, Cabelas, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Youth Outdoors Unlimited, Southern Arizona Chapter of National Wild Turkey Federation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Hunt of a Lifetime Arizona Chapter, Arizona Flycasters, Outdoor Arizona Kids (OAK), Arizona Wings Taxidermy, and Arizona Game and Fish Department. • 22 birds were harvested. Even better, every kid (and parents and many younger non-hunting siblings) heard gobblers, had a safe time, and enjoyed top notch hunt camp camaraderie.
  21. Check out the newest issue of the Arizona Elk Society Tracker Magazine. TRACKER MAGAZINE This is our quarterly magazine about the issues and information about what we do as well as articles about hunting. The Arizona Elk Society has a few ways to stay informed on issues and projects. One is to become and receive info and out magazine. Another would be to sign up for our Email Newsletter on the AES website home page. You could also join us on Facebook. I have also posted our upcoming work project in the Conservation forum on Coueswhitetail and other websites for anyone that wants to come out and help. To stay up to date on some of the issues the AES website has a tab on the top right that says ISSUES. CLICK HERE Click on that to see comment letters and information on current issues. We have a membership drive going on right now. If you join you will get a chance at a nice rifle. The drawing will be held on June 16 at our youth camp, Wapiti Weekend. Thanks for checking us out. Hope to see everyone in the woods this year. Steve

coconino forest changes starting in may

Just so everyone knows there is corridors designated in the Kiabab for dispersed camping. They didn't put it on the map. This is one of the points you need to comment to them about. If you look at the map there is a chart on the left side with open spur roads. Those roads are the ones with designated camping areas more than the 30Ft limit. Very misleading, maybe even on purpose. coconino forest changes starting in may

The Arizona Elk Society has been involved in the Travel Management meetings for over 4 years. We have posted a couple of the recent letters that we have sent the Kiabab and Coconino Forests with our comments and appeals. Please feel free to read and use for formulating your comments if you need. For the South Kiabab and Coconino the official comment periods have ended but as commenters the AES can still appeal during the appeal time frames. One of the issues you should be constantly commenting on is the accuracy and lack of information in the maps that they are providing. Steve Link To AES comment letters: AES Issues Page

    AES O'HACO PROJECT UPDATE!

For those that are driving to the Arizona Elk Society O’Haco Work Project. We will be loading up and driving up in the morning and will be putting up some signs and marking tape on the roads going in. John Toner was there today and the 300 ROAD is OPEN and the 34 ROAD WAS OPEN. SO we are taking the 300 rd from the turn off at the top of the rim like you are turning to Woods Canyon Lake. It will be cold and possible rain so bring warm clothes and rain gear. Some directions have changed: Take the 300 RD to the 34 RD and TURN RIGHT On the 34 RD you will come to an area where the pavement starts. Go about 3 miles on the pavement then watch for FR 63, TURN LEFT. Go about 7 miles to FR 63A and TURN LEFT. The last two miles on FR63 to the camp area are pretty rough. TAKE IT SLOW. Watch for a sign on the road and go through the gate about ¼ mi to camp. I am not sure there will be cell service but if it works my number is 602-885-0835 Thanks Steve
