What are the best radios out there

I use the Motorola Mag One, BPR40, VHF. I also upgrade the antenna for more range. Use them for many applications. As you may know there is no great radio (without repeaters) that go great distance in broken, mountainous country. Make sure you get the radios in 5 watt. Make sure you use the ear/mic attachments if in the woods. I usually program a bunch of search and rescue channels for emergencies. Check about laws governing these radios, there are only a few channels available to the public. Having tried and used all the regular 6-36 mile radios that only go 1/4 mi I can attest that these are good. Again in the canyons and mountains it is still a crap shoot on distance. I have radioed as far as 50 miles with the mobile one in my truck. BTW there are a bunch of Radius VHF radios for your truck or camper that are 25 watt and go alot further. So having one in your truck is not a bad idea. The guys in the field may not be able to call back to you but they will hear you in you are in the truck. I have found the radios online the cheapest and use Creative Communications to work on them and program. Make sure you get the Lithium Batteries and fast chargers. Steve
  2. I would like to add one change to my previous post. I have heard from a bunch of people in the past that they love what groups like the Arizona Elk Society are doing but just don't want to have a membership. They are willing to show up at youth camps, volunteer habitat projects and other events to give back and help out but don't want to join because of one reason or another. I feel that there is nothing wrong with that. So to that point I would like to change one thing I harped on in the last post and in some cases if you aren't a joiner, as in membership, then become a SUPPORTER. The people that come out and support are just as important as the ones that join. In each case you are doing something for the kids, habitat and heritage we enjoy. So GET INVOLVED, SUPPORT and/or JOIN. Thanks. Check out the AES Year in Review 2014.

Pay it forward - I will start

I may be going out on a limb here but when this thread started I felt it was a good thing. I was interested in watching it in the beginning and then because of a FLOOD of items and no way to see if the person that received an item passed it forward I lost interest. If there was some way to slow it down and take it one item at a time to see the process rather than flooding the process I would be more interested in Pay it Forward. Being involved in the Arizona Elk Society and running numerous camps for kids, women and newbies that are getting into hunting, as well as helping my friends with organizations like Hunt of a Lifetime, I see a real need for donations of used or new camo, gear, and other hunting & camping items that can be given when the need arises. The AES along with other groups run up to 40 camps where the main goal is to mentor new hunters and give them the knowledge and support to learn to ethically hunt and want to be part of the heritage that we all love. Many times throughout the year we receive hand me down items and camo for them and it is great. We see kids that are just getting into hunting and don't have the money to buy those things. I know of many kids that could use items. We also try to get giveways for all the kids in these camps to help them. If you have items that you would like to donate and know that they are going to these types of camp and youth feel free to call or email. The Arizona Elk Society spends upwards of $25,000 a year for youth camps so if you have items that are new that can help us raise funding please let us know. There are many kids that want to learn about the outdoors, conservation and hunting if we can just reach out to them. Thanks, Steve
  4. I apologize for this rant. There are some good things happening for Arizona's Elk and wildlife on many scales that most don't know about. Hopefully we can all find a way to work together to get great things to happen. As usual with these great discussion topics some good ideas and others that want to change a system for the benefit of a few. To bolster and conserve our wildlife you need to: Meet with the AZGFD and find out what is the issues that are restricting the numbers of wildlife in the state. Meet with USFS and find out what the formulas are for the percentage of forage, especially in the case of elk, allocated to wildlife. Meet with the forage Research Study Group to find out what are the forage use conditions. Formulate a plan that addresses increasing all of the above, or get involved in the plan that is already being worked on. Find groups that are doing the work that needs to be done to create more habitat, increase lbs per acre of forage, get more water on the landscape, create more openings for wildlife in the forest, create more corridors for migrations, create more grasslands, remove invasive junipers, fund prescribed burns to get rid of unusable forage and duff and create nutritious food, restore and build water sources for wildlife in the drought and help to distribute wildlife for better forage use, work with ranchers to create pipelines that can be used for wildlife, restore fencing around the old water catchments that will keep cattle out to benefit wildlife, educate our youth about the benefits of hunting and get them involved in conservation, restore watershed to the landscape, restore the health of the Forest and much more. These things are going on and some at a scale that the public has no clue about. There are some small scale projects that could use some volunteer help and there are some large scale projects that are happening. I am here to tell you that people are trying to get things done. The missing key is sportsmen helping. On many of the large scale issues politics get in the way, a letter or phone call can help the cause. There are many ways anyone can GET INVOLVED and help. The greatest need is for you THE HUNTERS to GET INVOLVED at some level!!!! This is where the anti groups are killing us - they have a plan and members that are focused, get involved, volunteer and raise funds. The plans are out there, some in motion and some that need help, some large and some small. Join a group, help and volunteer for projects and get others to get involved. This doesn't mean you personally have to fund all these thing be see if there is a way to help find funding, volunteers. Bring your friends to banquets, bring your friends to volunteer projects, maybe educate the place you work to donate funding or things to a banquet to help raise funding. We attend hundreds of meetings with many different groups and agencies that TALK about the issues. Just like these types of threads. The one thing that is usually missing is the BOOTS ON THE GROUND where it will make a difference. Join and support a group that is doing the work, help raise funds, educate your friends about the group and the work, get on a committee, help teach kids, become a leader, help at whatever level you can but GET INVOLVED!! *****This was by no means a personal attack on only one person. There are many good people that are involved we just need more. There are many reasons during our lives that make it difficult to get involved, work, family, funding, health and many others. Everyone knows them. But in the end if you can find a way to help and we all work towards the common goals we can create more and better wildlife habitat, we can restore and add more water to the landscape. we can educate more youth to the wonders of the outdoors, in a perfect world we can move mountains. In the case of Elk, we can create elk but we can't create the habitat needed to support them. We must focus on restoring habitat on small and large scale. 5. Just an FYI: They added about 50 tags overall for archery. The draft that was on the website stated a 49 tag decrease but the commission voted to add 5 tags to all the November Archery Hunts. They also moved the archery hunt up one (1) week in units where it would not affect other hunts.( I think it was 11 Units) They did move the early muzzleoader hunt in Unit 9, that was after the archery hunt, to the first week of the archery hunt and pushed the archery hunt back a week. So now the muzzeloader hunt is pre rut and the archery hunt, second week is a rut hunt. Big win for archery Unit 9 in 2015!!!!

    What IF....

Cool rifle. I have the exact same rifle from my Dad and Grandpa. When I was young we learned to shoot with a .22 and then we got to shoot the 30-30. It was fun and still is. Not too sure I like the steel butt plate. Great memories. My Dad wasn't a big hunter but he did take a deer with the rifle in upstate NY and I have the picture of him with the deer and the rifle.

  10. We are looking for youth that have not had the opportunity to hunt. We are looking for kids that don't come from a hunting family but are interested in learning to hunt in safe, mentored, free camps. If you know someone that would like to learn to hunt please have them check out the video and come to a camp. Have them check out all the camps - http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/MentoredHuntingCamps.shtml VIDEO; http://youtu.be/zjE08kyLe2g
  11. Starts today don't forget to download the coupon. Have a good time.
  12. I have used this discount in the past a few times. The discount runs from about 5% up to 35+%. It depends on the item. If it is a Cabela's brand it will carry the largest discount. Sometimes if an item is on sale the sale price will be the same or lower than the discount price. During the sale they can scan an item and tell you what the discount will be so there are no surprises at the register. Thanks Steve, Arizona Elk Society

Unit 8 and 9 not managed for trophy elk

The WM in question needs to read the Elk Hunt Guidelines. Units 1, 9, 10, and 23 will be managed under Alternate Elk Hunt Objectives. The bull to cow ratio in these units is managed higher and they are managed for more 6 point bulls. Hence the TROPHY Unit aspect. http://www.azgfd.gov/h_f/documents/huntguidelines.pdf

    Ground Blinds for elk

Another thing that plays into blind success is when it is hot and there is little water nearby. Elk will let down their guard when really thirsty. While hauling water we see elk come running in when they smell the water. They will hold up, usually at the fence line on catchments. Sometimes within 50 yards from us and the truck filling the tank. Even had bears come like that.

    Ground Blinds for elk

My experience on elk and lots of coues deer hunting: The better you blend it it to the surrounding the less reaction I have seen. Be careful of how the sun hits the blind. The biggest problem I have seen in hours of watching elk from a distance after placing the blind is that when the windows or shooting holes are opened, you just created a big black spot in their world, the more they react to the blind. I have used the mesh, never shot through it, and they did not react at all. I have made the opening smaller and they react very little. Step back and look at your blind from the distance where the elk will first see it. Does something stand out big time to you, fix it. Another thing I have noticed with pop up and brushed in blinds; Even the best ones get noticed it you just got done cutting the branches and releasing all the sap and tree scent. It is not natural for massive amounts of tree scent to be in the animals nostrils, they will shy away. If you decide to cut stuff, know the prevailing wind and the way the elk come in. If you put up a pop up, make sure it is downwind of the elk travel routes and spray it down with scent eliminator. I have had elk walk right up to the blind. Ford 7.3L Diesel Stock Turbo

I have a new turbo I bought for my truck, 2002 F250 7.3l diesel. It was installed then we realized it wasn't the turbo that went bad it was the injector O-rings that were puking oil. Pulled the Turbo right back off and put my old one back on. The old one had been modified so I wanted to keep it. There is nothing wrong with this one. It was from a turbo shop here in the valley and if I remember it is rebuilt. $400 Steve rthrbhntng@cox.net OBO.
