    Help for a Youth Hunt

Hey everyone, I realize this may be a long shot, but I was hoping someone might be able to help point me in the right direction for my nephews hunt. He is 16 and has been really getting into hunting over the last few years. His father passed away when he was 6, so I am doing everything I can to get him into this sport and spend lots of time with him. Well the little dude got very lucky and landed a Unit 19a Archery Antelope tag with only a few points. I knew there was a lot of private land up there, but didn't quite realize how bad it is. I am happy to put in the leg work, and not even asking for any pointers on good honey holes, but rather hoping to inquire if this is an impossible hunt without a guide. I purchased Point Guard if needed, and must say hiring a guide is unfortunately well outside my spending limit right now. Is this achievable on public land, and if not, does anyone have the contact information they could pass on regarding a rancher I could contact for land access up there? I am more than happy to drop the dude off for several weekends leading up to his hunt so he can do some work helping whoever grants him access if they would like. He would be happy to do so as well if it gives him a decent shot at an animal. Thanks in advance for anyone who can offer up some help.

    Help for a Youth Hunt

Thanks Flatlander and Ed67. I will definitely keep an eye out for that map, and will have no problem paying a trespass fee if it is reasonable. I make good money, but bad luck hit us pretty hard last year. We had a baby last year (not cheap), and thankfully she is totally fine and healthy, but she struggled a little and had to spend some time in the NICU after she was born (not cheap). Then my wife ended up having a bunch of health issues, and after a few months they determined it was a brain tumor (not cheap). Thankfully she is good to go after getting it removed, and they found it to be benign, but very scary nonetheless. All that depleted the fundage quite a bit, which sadly made a guide totally impossible. I will keep an eye out for that information from AZGF, which I assume will come with the tag. Also planning to head up there in a couple weeks and do some scouting. I am pretty familiar with Antelope as I have hunted them a few times up in Wyoming, which is also why I posed the question. Land access up there is extremely tough. Lots of Outfitters seem to lock the ranchers into contracts stating they won't allow anyone else in. Major bummer. We found this awesome section of BLM land that was about 10,000 acres, but contracts with the few ranchers that surrounded it made it completely unaccessible.

Thanks for the input! I have OnX and have spent a good amount of time looking around, along with Google Maps. Planning on picking up a Flatline Map as well to see look around even more. It does appear that most of the area where the Antelope would be seems to be private land, but I’m hopeful that isn’t the case.
  4. ***SOLD*** I have a Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85 Spotting Scope that is in immaculate, like new condition. It has been kept in the protective cover the entire time as I am OCD about my gear. I really do love this spotting scope, but have personally opted to switch to a set of 15x or 18x binos instead. Found myself rarely taking the spotting scope to save on weight. Definitely great glass. Particularly because this version was Made in Japan rather than China like the less expensive versions you regularly see for sale on various websites. Looking for $700 obo. I am happy to send additional photos if requested. Live in the East Valley and work in Tempe.
  5. Thank you to everyone who expressed interest. This item has sold.
  6. Good Morning Sbodrero, I did receive a message from another member expressing interest, but as of now the spotting scope is still available.
  7. Mruda1, thanks for the message. I messaged you back.
  8. ***SOLD*** I have a FHF GPS Pouch in Multicam. It has bungee and lanyard attachment points, and the lanyard can be purchased at FHF. In like new condition as it was lightly used. Looking to get $25.

    Backcountry Tent

For all you backcountry hunters, I was a little curious what you all use for a tent. I am looking to purchase a new one and torn between two options. The first option is the new Stone Glacier Skyscraper 2P tent. I love that it is a 4-season tent, with the option to buy a couple extra components and make it a lighter 3-season tent. Awesome that it would be a single tent for full year use in most environments. The only downside is that the tent is 4 lbs 4 oz (4-season) and 3 lbs 5 oz (3-season). The other options I am looking at are straight-up 3-season tents (Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 and the Nemo Hornet Ultralight). Those two tents are 2 lbs 13 oz and 2 lbs 5 oz respectively. The real question is how many of you run a 3-season tent all year long in Arizona? I know our winters aren't too crazy compared to the states north of us, and my current 3-season tent has even served me well in the winter archery hunts. Anyone have thoughts on this?

    Backcountry Tent

That's the one I am looking at and still considering. At this point I have completely narrowed it down to the TarpTent Stratospire 2 and the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 mtnGLO. Similar in price, but I like how easy the Big Agnes is to setup and that it is somewhat freestanding. I like that the TarpTent is a 4-season tent for slightly less weight than the Big Agnes. Super torn between the two.

    Backcountry Tent

😂 Yup, it's the one I sold this morning haha. My old tent that I sold to upgrade to either a lighter version or a 4 season.

    Backcountry Tent

Thanks! Glad to hear from someone who has one of the tents. Regarding the Stone Glacier in warm weather, one big concern I have regarding that tent is how it will work out in the warmer time of year. Specifically the Early Season archery hunts where I can be pretty warm. Did you feel it vented well and didn't get too hot in the tent? Not gonna lie, I am starting to think I should get the Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2, then get the Stone Glacier at a later date to really cover all my bases.

  14. ***SOLD*** Let me start by saying I LOVE this jacket. That being said, I am into back-country hunting and I have decided to eliminate a softshell jacket from my gear. This jacket has only been worn a total of 3 times, and it is basically like new. I use to have one in size L that I wore a lot, and recently bought the XL instead. Hope to find it a new home. $250 obo. Located in Gilbert and work in Tempe.
