When you start to stretch it beyond 400yds you really need to understand the science of long range shooting. And anything from 800yds to 1000yds and beyond you REALLY need to understand. You need to find a load that is consistant in velocity to begin with. You want to choose a bullet with a high B.C. Your going to want a heavier bullet, when you look at ballistics and energy at long range you will see why. You need to research ballistic programs and understand how to work, what they do, and how to use one. There are so many factors that effect your bullet when you get to longer ranges. Reading wind down range alone is a skill in itself. If your gun turns out to be capable of the longer shots then down the road you may want to look at NightForce optics. In my opinion they are the best. Good luck with your new project, that caliber when set up right can be a great long range weapon.

Are you going to be shooting MOA?

Thanks for the responses. Sure doesnt seem to be an abslolute science for the longer shots. I will stick to my comfort zone which is 55yds and in. I wont take a chance of wounding an animal thats just not what its about. Thank you all again.

I am new to archery hunting and I absolutely love it. I was wondering what range you veteran archers feel is ethical to harvest big game in Arizona(Mainly mule deer and elk). Can you shoot a hunting bow at ranges from 60yds to 100yds accurately? And if you are accurate does a broadhead have the kinetic energy at those ranges to perform? If one can put the practice in multiple times a week are these ranges possible? And if so what wieght arrow, fletching type, bow sight, draw weight do you guys have luck with?

If its going to be for hunting I would get a break that ports out of the sides. I have had trouble with the breaks that port 360 degrees following the shot especially if you have a long range weapon. The dust they kick up from the prone position is a nightmare. The defensive edge breaks are great for hunting applications.

Shooting long range (500yds to 1000yds and beyond) is absolutely ethical given the right equipment and the proper knowledge. Few people have this and thats why the art of long range hunting gets a bad reputation. You must have a true understanding of ballistics, and understand how a ballistic program works and how to use it. The proper load and bullet must be chosen and that takes time. Velocity consistancy is everything along with the proper BC. You must have the right optics. And have a gun that is truely built for long range, not just thrown together half hearted in the living room. And you must have a caliber that has the energy and none of the smaller calibers quaify period.
